The Role Model In You
Today’s Guest – Lola ‘The Vamp’ Montgomery

1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?

Lola ‘The Vamp’ Montgomery, Burlesque dancer, old enough to know better but young enough to play

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

It was the early 90s Supermodels who inspired me as a child to be healthy and stay fit. Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, they were all remote idols to me. They seemed to live in a fantastical world full of beautiful clothing. Their occupations were all about their bodies and how they manipulated them – posing, walking. It was just before the waif era and their bodies were strong and sensual.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

Cindy Crawford released a workout video which I bought. It was the first time I did something for my body that was outside of a learning or grading system. I was accustomed to sport in school and regular dance classes but this was the first time that physical activity became a leisure activity. It was also the first time I noticed how good I felt afterwards.

4. How did their lesson change your life?

The Supermodel’s example has stayed with me as the epitome of glamour, which was more important to my young mind than athleticism – for which I had precious little aptitude. They were at their zenith during a time when I was very impressionable and so looking after myself physically became something beautiful and aspirational.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

The main children in my life are under the age of three. My niece knows her Mummy does yoga often, so we encourage her to play at doing yoga herself. Making it fun for children is very important as there is so much emphasis on grades and achievement for children. Establishing a strong relationship with your body and finding ways to exercise that works or you is a very important life skill and one that needs to become a long-term interest.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

Don’t worry if you dislike the sports classes in school – I was eternally the softball scorer! Keep experimenting with physical activities like dance, yoga, pilates, swimming, martial arts or anything that takes your interest. Find an activity you love, and do it as much for a hobby as for a sense of achievement. You don’t have to be brilliant at something to gain the benefits, just doing it is enough

7. Do you have a web site you would like to promote….web address only?
