From Your Health Journal…..”A great article today from The Telegraph by Terry Wogan called Eating Is Just About Survival For Some. Please visit The Telegraph site (link provided below) to read the complete article. I have provided a short snip below to get you started. Some schools are offering breakfast to students whose parents haven’t the time, resources or inclination to feed them in the morning. Noticing that so many of their pupils are tired and listless through lack of nourishment, these schools have responded by providing a meal. I have published many articles here over the last few weeks about the UK and the wonderful job they are doing to change the nation’s eating habits to more healthy options, and fight the dreaded “obesity.” Please take the time to read this moving story by Mr. Wogan from the Telegraph.”

From the article…..

It’s time to face up to reality and stop talking nonsense about diets

You may recall my tale a couple of weeks ago of a little boy who had nothing to eat from the Friday afternoon when he left school until the Monday when he returned there.

I know that it was hard to believe, notwithstanding the current economic gloom, that such Dickensian deprivation should still exist here. Unfortunately, it’s all too true, and has been lately borne out by the news that some schools are offering breakfast to children whose parents haven’t the time, resources or inclination to feed them in the morning. Noticing that so many of their pupils are tired and listless through lack of nourishment, these schools have responded by providing food. It can only be hoped that this fine response spreads to all areas where there is need, while at the same time recognising that schools and teachers have their hands full with educating children, let alone taking responsibility for their welfare.

It all comes hot on the heels of a campaign to change the nation’s eating habits to more healthy options, and fight the dreaded “obesity”, which, you’ll recall, a former health minister once denounced as “more dangerous than global warming”. This a week after some other numpty had declared global warming a greater danger to the world than terrorism.

Of course, it’s a holy and a wholesome thought that we should all take the weight off ourselves, and by so doing, the NHS, by a healthier diet, but we’ve all been around this block a couple of times before. The clarion call to purge ourselves of impure fats, salt, sugar and filthy fast foods, in favour of a better, healthier way, seems to come up every six weeks.

It can only be a short time ago that the blessed Jamie came up with “pukka packed lunches” for schoolchildren, to replace the rubbish that their thoughtless mothers were carelessly cramming into the kids’ lunch boxes. Jamie’s, by contrast, had soup in a Thermos, half a papaya with a slice of lime, ciabatta with mozzarella or prosciutto, a salad with cherry tomatoes and mixed leaves and a dressing, wrapped in cling film, of lemon juice and olive oil.
