Although the usual rule is to brush your teeth in the morning and night before going to bed, it is not as simple as it seems. There are some techniques to right brushing and it is important to brush your teeth after meals. Most of the dentists recommend brushing teeth after meals so as to clean away all the sugar and starch that tend to cause damage to the teeth.
The Right Technique
The technique of brushing is equally important and most of us tend to brush our teeth in the wrong direction. Dentists often recommend brushing in a circular motion till the gum line so as to eliminate bacteria and germs. It is also important not to put too much pressure on the gums, which can cause damage and bleeding of the gums.
Children should wash their mouths thoroughly as too much fluoride in the toothpaste can damage their teeth. It is therefore important to rinse the mouth thoroughly rather than with a little amount of water. Adults can, however, choose to semi-rinse their mouth to retain a small film of fluoride. It is equally important to choose the right type of toothpaste. The pediatric dentist offers excellent dental services for children of all ages.
According to the ADA or the American Dental Association, flossing is equally important as brushing. It can be done before or after brushing the teeth as it includes various benefits. The fluoride in the toothpaste reaches in between the teeth if flossing is done after brushing.
Flossing should be done gently without hurting the gums. It can be introduced slowly in between the teeth and then removed. Never use an old piece of floss as it is often laden with plaque and germs.
Mouthwash is another effective way to eliminate bacteria in the mouth quite easily. It also helps to clear bad breath. Mouthwash with fluoride content can be used to strengthen the enamel of the tooth and prevent tooth decay. Mouthwash can be used immediately after brushing if it contains fluoride.
Some Other Useful Tips
Choose the right type of toothbrushes to brush the teeth gently. Use soft bristles as it causes less harm to the gums and enamel of the teeth. Brushing the teeth should not irritate the gums and cause damages.
It is also important to change the toothbrushes every three to four months as it tends to accumulate oral bacteria. Rinse the brush thoroughly after each use and store it upright in a cool and dry place. Never use closed caps for toothbrushes as it spreads bacteria. Toothbrushes should never be shared with anyone, as it tends to spread the bacteria.
