newyearsWe are approaching the time of year where people typically pull out and dust off those old New Year’s Resolutions. If you have the same goals year after year you may be in a rut. As a life coach and yoga teacher I like to help the people I work with to understand how to work in harmony with natural forces and will share one of my fun approaches to help you with those lingering goals.

As humans we do not defy the laws of nature. Use gravity for example; if you drop something out a window it will fall. The tips I share below are based on the theory of the Five Elements, which in Ayurveda (the sister science to

When we can compare one thing to another we can make assumptions about what may happen when we are unsure.

yoga) are Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. This is different than the Five Elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Feng Shui which are Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. These theories are different for many reasons but one similarity is that it simply helps us to categorize things with similar biological qualities.

When we can compare one thing to another we can make assumptions about what may happen when we are unsure. Here are some examples:

• Heavy objects tend to move more slowly if at all

• Water can flow with great force

• Hot things can burn

• Air is usually light

If you look at an actual tree, pond, fire or steam you may say this is logical. But did your know your emotions also comply with the Five Elements? Your emotions or moods strongly impact your success or lack thereof. Look at the list below. Pick the one that best describes how you feel and use the tip to help you get out of your rut:

1. I feel tired and get to the end of the day and realize I did nothing I wanted to do towards my goal. Tip: Feeling tired is a sign of too much earth element. Use the fire element to get you going. Try doing things that warm you up and ignite passion. Get out of your routine, make new friends or learn something new.

2. I feel apathetic and never fully commit to a specific direction with my goals. Tip: Too much water element is like trying to hold water in your hands. Use earth element to create structure or fire element to steam things up. Play with it. If you do not commit, then consider being more disciplined. Or go the other direction and use fire element to have some fun as suggested in the first tip.

3. I feel frustrated from trying and not getting the desired results. Tip: Too much fire element is like a fire raging which burns everything in its path. For you it’s time to slow down by calling on earth or water element. Water element helps you to feel cool, calm and flexible. For you it’s about nurturing. Take a break from your goal. You’ll be surprised; sometimes when you stop focusing on it the solution will magically appear.

4. I’m easily distracted and forget about my goals. Tip: Too much air element is similar to too much fire. It’s time for you to ground so follow the earth element tips above.

You may have noticed I did not make suggestions for adding air element and that is because typically we all have too much already. Air element includes the quality of change which is always present. Life throws a lot at us especially in our fast-paced technological society of texts and Tweets. If you want however please consider adding a meditation practice to your daily routine. When you focus on things that are not physical (matter), in other words the Fifth Element of Space you may notice profound changes in your life.

If you find these very basic tips helpful and want to learn more please feel free to contact me or research them on your own. It may lead you to what you are seeking. Have a fantastic New Year!
