From Your Health Journal…..”An interesting article today from Forbes called The White House Removes Petition Demanding Pepsi Spokesperson Beyonce Ousted From Inauguration Lineup. The White House has ended a petition on the We the People petition site that called for Beyoncé to be “un-invited” from performing the National Anthem at President Obama’s Inaugural ceremony. The reason? The popstar’s $50 million deal with PepsiCo. This is very interesting, as Beyonce is very involved with Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move program – almost seems like a conflict of interest. Coke and Pepsi have been in the news a lot this past week. Earlier, Coke put out some new ads addressing obesity, which did not get much praise from many outlets. Please visit the Forbes web site to read the complete article (link provided below). I found it very interesting.”

The White House has removed a petition on the We the People petition site that called for Beyoncé to be “disinvited” from performing the National Anthem at President Obama’s Inaugural ceremony. The reason? The popstar’s $50 million deal with PepsiCo.

On initial reflection Beyoncé Knowles seems the ideal celebrity to belt out the The Star-Spangled Banner with aplomb on Monday. A loyal and industrious Obama supporter, she and hip hop mogul husband Jay-Z, have hosted and performed at many fundraisers for the president helping to raise millions for the re-election campaign. Then, of course, there’s the fact that the multi-talented star can hold a pitch-perfect tune with the grace of an angel, all the while looking incredibly hot. So, a great choice, right?

Well. Actually no it isn’t. But the White House doesn’t seem to care.

In addition to hobnobbing with the president, Beyoncé has also partnered with Michelle Obama on “Let’s Move!”, the first lady’s campaign focused on getting America’s children exercising and eating healthily. In 2011, the megastar released the work-out video and song, Move Your Body for “Let’s Move!” which sees her leading an entire school canteen of surprisingly nimble kids through an energetic, fast-paced dance routine. The song has become something of an anthem for the campaign and the official video has had more than 25 million hits on YouTube. ”It’s all about the benefits of healthy eating and exercise and what we want to do is make it fun by doing something we all like to do and that’s dance,” said the star on her efforts to promote an active, healthful lifestyle among today’s youngsters.

And clearly this is a message that needs to be both delivered and heeded, urgently. One in three American children is obese or overweight according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Childhood obesity is widely acknowledged to be not only an epidemic but also a major threat to national security. More than 3,600 American kids are diagnosed annually with type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition once reserved for overweight adults. In fact, 25 years ago, type 2 diabetes was nearly unheard of in children.

She may talk the talk, but the reality is that Beyoncé is less than wholly committed to endorsing a healthy diet, as indicated by her recent $50 million deal with PepsiCo. This deal involves standard advertising initiatives as well as a multimillion-dollar fund to support the singer’s chosen creative products; all of which will send mixed messages to her legions of fans, many of whom are precisely the young people the “Let’s Move!” campaign targets. Beyoncé’s face will appear on Pepsi cans across the country, and supermarkets will prominently feature cut-outs of the popstar in a tiny pair of hot pants pushing a grocery cart packed full of Pepsi. The final word being, if you like Beyoncé, buy Pepsi and plenty of it.
