From Your Health Journal…..”Today’s article review comes from the Morning Sun, a publication I enjoy visiting often on the net, as they have great articles. Please visit their site (link below) to view the full article reviewed here as well as other great articles. The article starts off by stating that Kansas will be the seventh fattest state in the nation by 2030. The article also mentions how diabetes is on the rise in our country. The American Diabetes Association estimates 25.8 million have diabetes in America, which includes 7 million who are undiagnosed. The article continues to say that obesity has a multitude of health effects. Diabetes and heart disease, of course, but there are some joint issues because of the weight. Arthritis and lesser mobility are always part of it. But one component nobody really considers is the mental impact or the emotional cause. Many times, people turn to eat to cover deeper emotional issues. Bottom line, change is needed. Educating oneself on healthy lifestyle is important. From the article…..

According to one projection, Kansas will be the seventh fattest state in the nation by 2030.

Diabetes is also rising. Just ask Nancy Evans, a registered nurse/certified diabetic educator for Community Health Care-Southeast Kansas.

“Obesity is huge in this area,” Evans said. “It’s a contributing factor to all the diabetes showing up. It’s reaching epidemic proportions. And it’s only supposed to grow more prominent because of all the obesity.”

The American Diabetes Association estimates 25.8 million have diabetes in America, which includes 7 million who are undiagnosed. Another 79 million adults are at risk for Type 2 diabetes with an elevated blood glucose level.

One estimate for Crawford County shows that 35 percent — more than one in three residents — are obese in Crawford County.

There are many effects of obesity, beyond the obvious. Crawford County health officer Janis Goedeke sees them every day.

“Obesity has a multitude of health effects. Diabetes and heart disease, of course, but there are some joint issues because of the weight. Arthritis and lesser mobility are always part of it. But one component nobody really considers is the mental impact or the emotional cause. Many times, people turn to eat to cover deeper emotional issues.”
