The National League of Cities (NLC) has recognized Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden for recent completion of key health and wellness goals for Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC). LMCTC is a major component of First Lady Michelle Obama’s comprehensive Let’s Move! initiative, which is dedicated to solving the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation.

“We are grateful to receive these national awards that recognize our ongoing commitment to battling childhood obesity by encouraging our youngsters to eat healthier and to lead a more active lifestyle,” Mayor Holden said.

In all, five medals were awarded to Baton Rouge for action taken to improve access to healthy affordable food and increase opportunities for physical activity, including:

– A Bronze Medal in Goal I (Start Early, Start Smart) for having an active interagency collaboration on early care and education programs.

– A Bronze Medal in Goal III (Smart Servings for Students) for having at least 60 percent of public schools participating in the School Breakfast Program.
