Healthy Tip # 87

Welcome to the category of my blog simply called ‘Healthy Tips.’ Many times, when I write articles for various publications, I need to find sources for the story as seen in Yahoo Shine (click here) or PBS (click here) about staying healthy. I was looking for experts and non-experts to chime in and give their favorite ‘tips’ to help kids and adults lead a healthy lifestyle.

The feedback for various stories was amazing. The sources had some fantastic points of view that could not be ignored, and I thought their opinions should be viewed on the Your Health Journal web site.

So, enjoy my new series, with some ‘great’ insight from some ‘great’ people giving exceptional and educational points of view.

Healthy Tip From Dr. John Mayer

Exercising together as a family today is crucial because it provides a model for the young family members to live a healthy lifestyle as adults. With PE classes being cut, obesity escalating, and so many other social modeling NOT supporting physical fitness and healthy lifestyle the importance of the family to be an island in the child’s world in spite of all these forces pulling a child away from a healthy lifestyle. Exercising together is also a great, maybe perfect way for families to BOND, especially as certain family members are in difficult stages of life–like teenagers. More to say here.

familyMake exercising fun for all and think out of the box. Adults need to stop being ego centric about their workout. For example, an adult can get a great cardio workout by playing Frisbee golf rather than needing to run around a track. Think unconventionally and with engaging everyone into the activity and it can be a wide variety of physical activities–playing with the dog/throwing a ball/tag games/walking (Fantastic exercise) bike riding and on and on.

See my response above. We have tremendous forces modeling young people AWAY from physical activity—yes video screens, yes fast food, yes our indulgent society, yes way too much stimulation, and yes poor nutrition which leads to low energy and motivation for physical activity, and yes, the stresses of our demanding society sapping motivation and energy away from exhausted adults after work hours and drained kids after school demands. FAMILY FIT shows families how to lead an active, healthy lifestyle in spite of all these pressures.

The key isn’t “Let’s Move” it’s, as I say, “Let’s Move Together!”
