Welcome to the category of my blog simply called ‘Healthy Tips.’ Many times, when I write articles for various publications, I need to find sources for the story as seen in Yahoo Shine (click here) or PBS (click here) about staying healthy. I was looking for experts and non-experts to chime in and give their favorite ‘tips’ to help kids and adults lead a healthy lifestyle.

The feedback for various stories was amazing. The sources had some fantastic points of view that could not be ignored, and I thought their opinions should be viewed on the Your Health Journal web site.

So, enjoy my new series, with some ‘great’ insight from some ‘great’ people giving exceptional and educational points of view.

Healthy Tip From Kathy Gruver

I have been involved in natural health for over two decades and the biggest change I’ve seen when it comes to families exercising together is the advent of computers and personal devices and decrease in free time.

When I was a kid we couldn’t wait to get outside and play. We thought it odd that our neighbor was more interested in Legos than football. But now, with everything at our fingertips and us relying so heavily on technology, we don’t have the urge or prompting to get outdoors and enjoy the sun, air and exercise. So many studies have been done on the amount of sitting and life expectancy and also what is happening with children’s vision from staring at a screen. Not to mention the obesity and Type-2 diabetes. Also, with the economy the way it is, many parents are forced to work longer hours or work at home after the regular workday. The downtime that parents and children once had is no more.

I’ve also noticed an increase in the amount of homework that children are required to do. This is another reason children are spending less time playing and exercising with the family. Setting aside time everyday to do some sort of activity as a family is key to providing a healthy environment for children to thrive and parents to bond with their kids. There is no easy solution, but steps can be taken to help. Scheduling playtime all together is one way or having a family olympics where you get everyone involved can be a great bonding event. Having an hour a day where all electronics are banned is another. Also, just realizing the importance of family activity can inspire you to make changes.
