Healthy Tip # 63

Welcome to a new category of my blog simply called ‘Healthy Tips.’ Many times, when I write articles for various publications, I need to find sources for the story. Recently, I wrote an article for Yahoo Shine (click here) and PBS (click here) about keeping kids healthy. I was looking for experts and parents to chime in and give their favorite ‘tips’ to help kids (and their families) lead a healthy lifestyle.

The feedback for the story was amazing. The sources had some fantastic points of view that could not be ignored, and I thought their opinions should be viewed on the Your Health Journal web site.

So, enjoy my new series, with some ‘great’ insight from some ‘great’ people giving exceptional and educational points of view.

Healthy Tip From Luci Gabel

“Research shows that one of the most important success factors in losing weight and staying fit is a support group. The family unit is the closest -knit group and the one that has the strongest and most lasting influences in people’s lives. In addition to eating around the dinner table, and instead of watching TV, exercising with the family is a way to share meaningful time together. By making it a normal affair, the family can become the strongest and most effective support group around exercise and healthy living.”

“Game-playing is fast becoming known for it’s effectiveness in getting people to do things they otherwise wouldn’t do. Physical games provide a fun and effective way for a family to move more, provide a great way to learn teamwork, and even resolve disputes. Any physical game will do – volleyball, kickball, tennis, paddleball, baseball, soccer. Members of a family can do a round-robin – every week a different family member chooses the game – or pull a game out of the hat – to make sure all preferences are met.”

“Families are not exercising as much these days because most of us have forgotten how to be active. Many even feel as though physical movement is uncomfortable and painful. Game -playing is a way to get people back into movement, and even forget that they’re moving.”
