The Role Model In You series discusses how individuals were influenced as a child to lead a healthy lifestyle. It covers who influenced these individuals, the changes they made in their life to be healthy, and the message they would like to convey to the youth of today. 1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?
My mother was my greatest inspiration for eating healthy and staying fit.
3. What did they do to inspire you?
Although she worked full time, she made sure I had a hot breakfast every morning before I went to school, a healthy and fun lunch, and a well-balanced dinner every night. She also always remained active with activities that were not just physical, but also fun for her like belly dancing and yoga. To this day, she plays tennis and has a regular pilates practice!
4. How did their lesson change your life?
Thanks to my mom, I always keep active. And it’s easy because I never think of exercise as work, but as play!
Also, I don’t deprive myself when it comes to food. Although meals were always healthy growing up, we didn’t shy away from dessert! But I think the secret was that dessert was either healthy (like fruit) or portions were small… or both!
5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?
Yes! I encourage kids to find ways to be active that they enjoy! I am certified to teach yoga to children and teens for that very reason! If they’re not passionate about yoga, I encourage their participation in group and/or individual sports.
6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?
Get away from the computer, TV, phone, and computer games for at least one hour a day and move your body! It can be as simple as taking your or your neighbor’s dog for a walk. Or closing your bedroom door and dancing to your favorite songs alone or with a friend. Make exercise a habit… and the easiest way to do that is to make it fun!
