Welcome to a new category of my blog simply called ‘Healthy Tips.” Many times, when I write articles for various publications, I need to find sources for the story. Recently, I wrote an article for Yahoo Shine (click here) about keeping kids healthy. I was looking for experts and parents to chime in and give their favorite ‘tips’ to help kids (and their families) lead a healthy lifestyle.

The feedback for the story was amazing. The sources had some fantastic points of view that could not be ignored, and I thought their opinions should be viewed on the Your Health Journal web site.

So, enjoy my new series, with some ‘great’ insight from some ‘great’ people giving exceptional and educational points of view.

Healthy Tip From Rachel Begun

“Children are more likely to try and eat foods that they are familiar with. So, if we want our children to make smart food choices now and in the future, it is our responsibility as parents and adults in their lives to give them opportunities to become familiar with healthful foods. The best way to do this is include them in food shopping and preparation. Allow them to choose a new fruit or vegetable every time they come shopping with you. Encourage them to look at all of the beautiful colors and feel the interesting textures.”

“Next, bring them into the kitchen to help you prepare meals. There are appropriate culinary skills for every age group. Even very young children can wash food, toss a salad or mix batters with a spoon.”

“The skills they learn will last a lifetime and it’s a great way to spend quality time with the family.”
