nightmareAn interview with Author, Mark Divine….

Why did you get into writing books?

I love telling and hearing stories, when I realized I wanted to write my own, It was a very freeing and healing experience for me. Horror movies and books always inspired me and my art, and I ultimately wanted to be a film maker of some sorts but I didn’t have the money or knowledge to do so. So I decided to write it out on paper through poetry within the eyes of the Mark Divine character that I play through my art.

What advice can you give young authors?

Be absolutely fearless when you write. Do not think about who may or may not enjoy your work. Once you start creating things to satisfy other people, you completely lose yourself. Write and create the story that YOU would want to read!

What is your book about and what inspired you to write it?

Nightmare is about heartbreak, sexual trauma, paranoia, anxiety, depression, and self love. These are all things I experienced and have struggled with. And all these things ultimately inspired the book heavily. Within the storyline, Mark Divine let’s his trauma posses him and he falls into deep despair over things he can no longer control. The book is a slow burn, but gets lighter at the end as the poems are all about acceptance and self love. It’s similar to how I felt at the end of me writing the book, I got into a really happy and healthy place again.

Any other information you want to mention that fits the theme of the article?

I’m working on a new side project that tells more of a closer look of where Mark Divine comes from. It’s really interesting, I’m having a lot of fun with it! I can’t wait to put it out early in the new year with the follow up of my insomnia poetry collection, which is the final chapter of nightmare. The storyline is getting bigger, and of course… darker.
