I’m not sure how basic you’d like to get, but the most critical factors in increasing SEO are:
Use headers and page titles that match likely search terms. If you use WordPress, much of this is automatic. Make sure Google sees important words and phrases as headers by marking them as headers. As needed, change the style sheet reference for all headers. Don’t make a word look like a header, make it a header.
Incoming links are a big part of Google’s algorithm. Partner with others to share links, and make sure your site is in your email footer. If you provide copy to others, include links back to your site.
If I could give one tip, it would be to make sure that your value proposition is clear and up front. Give the answer to “What’s in it for me?” right away. Good visuals that reinforce a message – not just decorate a page – are important for web readers and sharing. Invest in good photography and a decent designer or WordPress theme.
I work as a marketing director for a liberal arts university, and I keep a few relevant links on my blog. Recent posts include communication planning and other resources for social media, though these steps apply to other media as well.
