In addition to protecting your body from the sun, don’t forget your scalp!

joggersWhile it’s important to focus on protecting your body from the sun’s rays, don’t forget about your scalp! Baylor College of Medicine dermatologists say that whether you have a full head of hair or nothing at all, your scalp is still susceptible to skin cancer.

Those with dark, thick hair have more protection on their scalp from the sun than those with blonde hair.  No matter the color or texture, a form of extra sun protection should always be used.

“While most cases of skin cancer on the scalp are found in balding men, a full head of hair doesn’t mean you are fully protected,” said Dr. Ida Orengo, professor and chair of dermatology at Baylor.

Dr. Oyetewa Asempa, dermatologist and director of Baylor’s Skin of Color Clinic, recommends using spray formulations or powder sunscreens on your scalp that can be easier to apply through your hair.

“Traditional lotions work well on thinning hair or in bald areas. You can also use a makeup brush to apply regular sunscreen to the scalp at the part to avoid making the hair greasy,” Asempa said.

Orengo adds that the best prevention method to protect your scalp from the sun is to wear a hat with at least a 3-inch brim around the entire head. If not a hat, then carry an umbrella for shade.
