2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

As a child, I didn’t really get any inspiration. Luckily, I did not have any major health problems and basically ate what was prepared for me. My role models were not necessarily healthy or fit. Members of my family dealt with issues of weight, diabetes and heart disease. My grandmother always seemed to be healthy and her favorite foods were ice cream and coffee cake! I think my genetics mostly came through her.

My inspiration didn’t come until I was in my 40s and learned my Earth Wisdom tradition. Through the wisdom of the medicine wheels, I learned that my body is the sacred temple for my spirit in this human life. Part of keeping my life in balance is to keep my body in balance. I learned about the healing power of my body and the importance of living in respect for the plants and animals who nourish me.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

During all of our trainings, the food my teachers served was either local or organic. They inspired me by being a role model of a healthy lifestyle. They helped me to learn how to listen to my own body’s intelligence about what it needed, when and how. They challenged us to take a deep look at the way food is marketed and the effects of addictions in our lives. They gave us the Earth Wisdom tools to conquer our addictions through self-authority.

I have been challenged with Exercise Induced Asthma since I was a child and am not good at aerobic activity. I get out of breath very fast. I remember an experience that happened during one of the Earth Wisdom teaching ceremonies I attended. We were on the land in New Mexico, high desert and deep canyons. The keeper told us we were going on an excursion into the canyon and began the descent. I was skeptical because this would require me to go up and down very steep slopes and I didn’t think I could do it. I looked down and saw this 80-year-old medicine man hiking down the canyon trail as if it were easy. This was an inspiration to me and I thought, “If he can do this, I can too.” With his leadership, I was able to face my fears and honor the pace my body needed to make the journey successfully.

4. How did their lesson change your life?

theroadupMy Earth Wisdom teachers taught me how to access the medicine wheels to help me find wisdom for any challenge in life. I know when I am reacting out of fear and how to shift my energy to respond with heart-felt action instead. I understand that I am responsible for caring for my sacred body temple and I listen for its intuitive wisdom when making choices about healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

Yes. I am a member of a group who conducts Earth Wisdom ceremonies at a retreat center. During each ceremony, we strive to serve local, homegrown or organic foods. We teach the children at these ceremonies about their connections to nature and how having a healthy lifestyle is part of being happy and honoring the earth.

We have different ceremonies during the year where the food may be very simple, or there may be fasting required for the ceremony. From these events, we learn how to look at our food choices and develop respect for the simplicity of what is really needed. Though children are not always part of these ceremonies, we are teaching ourselves as adults how to be good role models for our children by the choices we make.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

It is important to teach our children the role of self-authority in their life. The media today does not portray a healthy lifestyle and our children need a solid base from which to learn to evaluate the choices they have. It is also important to provide them opportunities to connect with nature. This connection will teach them to respect themselves and to respect others. Growing up with a healthy respect for plants and animals will teach our children how all of their actions have a profound effect on the planet.

Our children are the Earth Keepers of the future and by being good role models for them, we can help them understand their important role in the unfolding of the future for all.

I am the author of a children’s book titled Fairy Wings. The book is about a young child who finds a baby fairy in the woods and how she learns to care for the baby fairy for seven years, until it can get its wings. The book’s message is about holding a dream over time and how peer pressure can steer you away from your dream. Our children will face all kinds of challenges from their peers, society as a whole and from media. They need to be able to have the confidence to stay true to themselves when faced with these challenges. This book is available on my website.
