Easy Ways To Reduce Neck Pain

doctorOnline access can help people improve their health. The Internet can offer a means to research health conditions, connect socially, reach health care providers, find diet and nutrition information, and learn about exercise.

When the source of neck pain seems like a mystery, the culprit may be a smartphone or laptop, reports the June 2016 Harvard Health Letter. Bending the head down to look at a screen puts the body in an unhealthy position. “Think of it as an overuse injury. The neck and shoulders are being forced into one static position for too long,” says Dr. Clare Safran-Norton, a physical therapist and clinical supervisor of rehabilitation services at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Looking down flexes the neck forward. Supporting this position requires the help of the muscles in the neck, and sometimes the shoulder and shoulder blade muscles. “After a while, the muscles will get tired, overstretched, and weak, and will begin to hurt,” says Dr. Safran-Norton.

But there are plenty of simple fixes. Many focus on raising the screen or reading material to eye level to avoid looking down. For instance:

* Place a pillow on the lap, then rest the laptop or tablet on the pillow.

* Raise a monitor to eye level by placing it on a stack of large, sturdy books.

* Prop up a book in a book holder, and then place that on top of a pillow or table.

Simple neck exercises can also help reduce pain. But when pain lasts more than two weeks, Dr. Safran-Norton recommends seeking professional help. More serious causes of neck pain include arthritis, neck bone spurs, ruptured discs in the spine, fractures, scoliosis (sideways curvature of the spine), old whiplash injuries, and poor posture.

4 Ways To Maintain Your Brain

brainAerobic exercise, the Mediterranean diet, social connectedness, and undertaking challenges reduce the risk of dementia.

Many people want to build up some “insurance” against dementia and other memory problems. But there’s no need to invest in pricey brain-training programs. Instead, do-it-yourself lifestyle changes have been shown to help ward off memory loss and dementia, reports the February 2015 Harvard Women’s Health Watch. The following strategies lead the list:

Exercise. “The best evidence so far is for aerobic exercise and physical fitness,” says Dr. Bradford Dickerson, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. Scores of studies and clinical trials have linked regular aerobic exercise to a reduced risk of dementia. A few brain imaging studies have even shown that aerobic exercise increases brain mass and improves reasoning ability. The best exercise “dose” is 30 minutes or more per day, five times a week.

Eat well. The Mediterranean diet — high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; moderate in olive oil, unsaturated fats, lean protein (poultry, fish, beans, and nuts), cheese, yogurt, and wine; and low in red meat — has been a mainstay of cardiac prevention for almost 20 years. It has also been linked to a reduced risk of dementia. The closer people follow this type of heart-healthy diet, the lower the risk.

Stay connected. Being part of a social network also appears to reduce the risk of dementia. The variety in a person’s social network and the satisfaction he or she gets from social contacts is more important than the size of the network.

Keep mentally active. The “use it or lose it” principle appears to apply to brain health. Mental stimulation, like playing a musical instrument, learning another language, volunteering, or engaging in hobbies, offers greater benefits than repetitive exercises like crossword puzzles. Although “brain-training” programs are a multi-million-dollar industry, there is no conclusive evidence that any of them improves memory or reasoning ability. “We don’t know whether playing brain games is helpful,” Dr. Dickerson says. “Getting together with family and friends to play cards may be as good.”

Ways To Look After Your Smile

Share Button

By Steve Barker

malesmileOur teeth are obviously an important part of our bodies, so looking after them is a top concern for most. There are many benefits to a bright smile, aside from just appearance. With the job market more competitive than ever, having good first impressions can be the difference between getting a job and losing it, or between securing a client and losing one. A well looked after set of teeth can help you give the best possible first impression.

A friendly smile is also a benefit if you are looking for love – it is often said that potential partners make a judgment of you within the first 15 seconds of you meeting! We’re not so sure how true that is, but there is probably some merit in the broader point, if you’re looking for love, care for your teeth first! Not least of all, having a healthy mouth can give you a boost of personal confidence by making you feel better about yourself. If you are wondering what you can do to improve your dental health, you’ve come to the right place!

Dental Treatments that Can Enhance Smiles

No matter what your age, you can always do something to improve the health of your smile. Below we look at some of the most common treatments, their benefits, and general information.

● Cosmetic Procedures – These come in a wide variety of options and can be both restorative and purely cosmetic (i.e. there are no underlying problems that need fixing). Treatments like bonding are an attractive solution for those that do not like the gap between their teeth. Cosmetic procedures aren’t only for fixing appearance imperfections, but also to repair the damage done by dental conditions such as gingivitis.

● Teeth whitening – A very popular procedure that can give you a Hollywood smile! One of the most common types of cosmetic dentistry, this is a quick method that gives tremendous results at a cost effective price point. Whitening is an excellent choice if you’re preparing for an interview or trying to impress that special someone!

● Restorative care – Carried out when there has been a severe dental condition like tooth loss. This type of treatment is more common among senior citizens but applies to people of all ages. Typical treatments include dental implants and dentures.

Protect your Smile with Insurance

Dental insurance can save you a lot of money in the case of emergency care for you or your family. At the end of the day, the decision is a financial one which you are best placed to make, but we can advise on some of the pros and cons. One of the biggest advantages is the reduction in cost if you do require emergency dental treatment. An often overlooked factor is that having a dental plan can reduce your financial worries about going to see your dentist, and this means that you get the right advice and care as soon as you develop a problem, rather than putting off a visit to the dentist’s because you are concerned about the cost.

In the long term, putting off any healthcare complaint can seriously impact your long term health outcome and also cost more money than it would have done to get the problem sorted early on. The drawbacks to having dental insurance is that you may never need it but always have to pay for it. Naturally, this is obviously how any insurance works and can be a risky strategy to go without some kind of backup plan. Also, it is essential that you understand the terms of your insurance paying particular attention to what conditions/treatment it covers and any additional charges you may incur. It could be that some treatments aren’t more expensive than on a plan, but this all depends on the nature of the plan you take out. It is because of this reason that we advise you to have a good read and speak to someone with experience to help you make the decision for yourself.

Enjoy Your Smile!

The most important point of this is article is easily summarized: enjoy your smile and maintain a healthy mouth! Don’t suffer with teeth that you aren’t happy with, because life is too short. There are many dental companies out there, exceptionally experienced with hundreds of satisfied customers, such as VSP Dental. Whatever dental treatment you choose, always remember that if you look after your health, it will take care of you!

7 Ways To Stay Fit Outdoors

By Sam Jones

familywalk2Do you love the great outdoors? There are plenty of ways to stay active and healthy while getting some fresh air. If you’re like most people with busy schedules, here are seven great ideas you can incorporate into your day to maintain better health.

1.) HIKING – In the technology age, nothing can be as refreshing and satisfying as going out for a hike. With a good pair of hiking shoes you can take yourself anywhere you want to go. Finding the right pair is a match-making process, as it should be. You will be relying on those shoes for the long haul. As mentioned in REI, you should choose wisely, and consider the importance of appropriate socks, aftermarket insoles, and breaking in your boots before planning that first trip.

2.) BIKING – Going for bike rides can be a quick, convenient, and not to mention great way to surround yourself with nature. For rocky terrain, a good mountain bike with spring based suspension is highly recommended. For city workouts, you might consider a single speed bike for getting lower body and aerobic workouts. If you’re looking online for a great custom bike, check out Brooklyn Bicycle Co. They’ve got a great Buy & Ride program that will ship to a local dealer near you.

3.) INLINE SKATING – Also known as ‘rollerblading’ and popular in the 1980s and 1990s, grab a pair of skates and get moving! As noted by LiveStrong, going rollerblading promotes muscular endurance and can burn 913 calories in a single hour for an average 160 pound individual. It’s further noted to be a low impact exercise on the cardiovascular system because the activity itself promotes a gentle circulatory workout while burning fat.

4.) ROWING – Why use an indoor rowing machine at the gym when you can get out on the lake? At least for when the weather permits, as the movement of rowing exercises the entire body for a great cardio workout. In fact, HarpersBazaar notes that rowing is one of the most efficient exercises for working out all of the muscle groups.

2.) ROCK CLIMBING – Great for isometric and upper body workouts. It’s recommended to search for experienced climbing instructors first before you attempt more expert rock climbing locations. That way you can plan a few rock climbing sessions in advance, learn about the proper safety equipment, and hone your technique. You can find a list of world rock climbing gyms over at Indoorclimbing.com if you’re interested in scheduling regular sessions.

6.) SWIMMING – If you like the water and don’t mind getting wet, swimming is the perfect way to round your outdoor workouts. The cardiovascular benefits, on top of getting a full body workout, is worth adding to a daily or weekly routine. You could do a search for your nearest YMCA or search local Facebook groups if you don’t have a pool at home, or access to a local community lake association.

7.) YOGA – Saving one of the greatest fitness activities for last, since most people might not associate yoga with outdoor fitness. Indeed, this is the case! It is preferable to be outdoors, breathing fresh air, and connecting with nature in its natural environment. Yoga postures help both with isometrics and circulating Qi throughout the body.

It’s often easy to get caught up in the hectic work week. By making sure to keep outdoor fitness as part of your daily or weekly routine, your body will thank you for it!

5 Enjoyable Ways To Gain More Energy

Share Button

healthyheartIn our busy world, an extra boost of energy never hurts. This is especially true for the 10-15% of people who say they regularly feel run down. Usually it isn’t a singular issue that leads to exhaustion but rather several overlapping habits that are keeping your body from fully recovering from daily activity.

If you are trying to lose weight the healthy way, energy is important for both your willpower and wellbeing. Making a few enjoyable adjustments could be all you need to power through the day.

Eat Breakfast

Breakfast really is the most important meal because it revs up our engines, helps us fill up with fuel and keeps blood sugar levels in check. The latter point is much more important than many people realize. When you forgo breakfast you’re much more likely to experience spikes and drastic drops in blood sugar throughout the entire day. Spikes in blood sugar are met with a rush of insulin to control it, and this can cause your energy levels to crash.

A protein packed breakfast is the easiest way to keep blood sugar levels regulated. Follow it up with several small meals and snacks to feel energized all day.

Get Deep Sleep

Sleep is needed for the body to recharge. If you aren’t getting enough in general that’s a problem, but if your sleep is regularly interrupted that can also lower your energy levels. There are four stages of sleep that are cyclical. Deep sleep happens in the last two stages of sleeping, and it’s the most effective at warding off sleep drive during the day. It’s important to go through these stages multiple times in a night because the most impactful deep sleep happens within the first two cycles. If you are constantly waking up you may not be getting enough deep sleep even if you hit the sheets for 7-8 hours a night.

Guzzle Water

waterbottleDehydration is an instant energy zapper. Even mild dehydration will have you dragging your feet no matter how much you exercise. On top of that dehydration will also inhibit your ability to think clearly and affects your mood. How do you know you’re mildly dehydrated? If you feel thirsty your body is already dehydrated. You don’t necessarily have to drink eight glasses of water a day, but it is important to hydrate every few hours.

Get Out in the Sun

Artificial, fluorescent lighting could be draining your energy. Employers are paying attention to new studies that show artificial lighting can negatively affect productivity. A Swiss neurologist found that natural light has the opposite affect. Study participants that spent time out in the sunlight were more alert and less likely to feel sleepy in the late afternoon and early evening.

Meditate Each Morning

A little bit of relaxing me time never hurt anyone, and it can have a positive affect on your energy levels. Starting your day with just 5-10 minutes of meditation has many health benefits, including increased energy levels. The main reason meditation is so great at upping energy levels is because you’re more focused on breathing deeply. When you take shallow breaths you aren’t getting enough oxygen in your body. Deep breaths will flood the body with oxygen helping cells repair themselves, lowering the heart rate and increasing blood circulation – all of which can help you increase your energy.

These are just five easy ways you can start feeling more energized instantly. Tonight get a good night’s sleep, then tomorrow wake up and have a healthy breakfast after meditating for a few minutes. At work keep a bottle of water at your desk as a reminder to drink up, and take it with you on a short afternoon walk outside. You’ll be amazed at how much more energized you feel throughout the day.

5 Simple Ways To Boost Office Morale

Share Button

collegekidsYou built your company from scratch. It was difficult, but you did it. You overcame obstacles and achieved small victories until you had a success breakout. After that you rode the wave of momentum and your business got bigger and better.

But over the past few months, you’ve noticed a slump in business. Sales have declined. Customers complain more. Refunds are on the rise. People call in sick. More employees are quitting. It also seems to take longer and appears to cost more to launch new initiatives.

Puzzled, you walk around the office, asking questions. You get lethargic answers and lame excuses. You get a poor response to your queries. Then it hits you, morale is low.

Looking around the office with this new perspective, you now see it with new eyes.

Apathy, like a cloud of smog, hovers around the cubicles. People don’t work well with each other. They bicker and complain more than try to work things out. They don’t talk to each other much, either. Nobody shows any initiative. Attitude is bad, and performance even worse.

What can you do to turn things around?

Here are 5 suggestions:

1. Recognize individual achievements. People wilt when their best work goes unrecognized and unappreciated. They lose their drive and ambition. The spark of initiative fades out of their eyes. Offering raises, promotions, and benefits is one way of rewarding consistent hard work. But other ways exist, too. For instance, personally congratulating someone in public for their contribution does wonders.

2. Make the office less boring. Many high-tech businesses have grasped the idea of creating a less somber office environment. People may be allowed to remodel their cubicles to display their idiosyncratic preferences. Or they may be allowed to create their own schedule. An article in New York Times describes how Google does it: “Google lets many of its hundreds of software engineers, the core of its intellectual capital, design their own desks or work stations out of what resemble oversize Tinker Toys. Some have standing desks, a few even have attached treadmills so they can walk while working. Employees express themselves by scribbling on walls. The result looks a little chaotic, like some kind of high-tech refugee camp, but Google says that’s how the engineers like it.”

3. Make break rooms more fun. The idea of a break room is to get away from work for a short while to refresh the mind. Simple changes can have profound effects. Aramark Refreshments suggest refreshment with ice: “Ice machines are a growing treat for employees. Iced tea and coffee help make your workplace more friendly and productive. When employees feel more satisfied with their options, they work harder and more efficiently. And you finish first.” Another popular idea is to have a space for fun and games—video games, pool tables, dart boards.

4. Allow people to do their own thing one day a month. High paced work often forces people to fall behind in their personal projects. Imagine, then, allocating one day a month for people to do their own personal project. This can be anything people want. Perhaps, it’s catching up on their blog, doing their taxes, or planning their vacation. One day to come to the office and work on your own project! The idea of a paid day off has lost its novelty. People often don’t know what to do on this extra day off. But the idea of coming to the office and getting paid to do their own thing appears to fascinate people.

5. Spice things up a little. While predictability is a human need, so is variety. When things get too predictable, they also get boring. How can you make your office less boring? You can change things around a little. Match people with different teams to learn new skills. Change the wall décor once a month to a different nature scene. Focus on task completion rather than how many hours they work. When you think about it, there are many ways to make work more interesting by spicing things up a little.

A Positive Work Environment

Most businesses think of raising morale as offering bonuses, spiffs, perks, rewards, and awards. While these have their place, money and status is not the only reason why people work. They are also looking for a place where they can feel more positive about themselves and their career.

As a business owner, there are many ways to create a positive work environment:

• You can train managers to be more like counselors than school teachers.

• You can create a cash incentive program for the best ideas that will improve your business.

• You can offer mentorships to help people get up to speed in the skills they need to learn to do their work better.

• You can pay for employee’s certification programs to enhance their work skills.

• You can reserve one day a month for a company picnics. It gives people a chance to know each other outside the formality of work.

• You can organize work into teams to break feelings of isolation and to promote camaraderie, feedback loops, more productivity, and better performance. You can even have team competitions.

When people are happier at their work, they will do better work. Figure out what works to raise morale in your business.

5 Ways To Calm A House Full Of Hormones

Share Button

By Mary Jo Rapini, MEd, LPC

familywalk2Women are getting married later in life and having their children later as well. There are advantages to this, because moms and dads have more emotional maturity before they begin their family. However, one of the big disadvantages is that for women it’s becoming more and more likely they will go through menopause while their daughter is going through puberty.

Going through peri-menopause, menopause and puberty are rites of passage and each one tough. You feel moody, irritable, bloated, and exhausted. For moms with small children, it can be overwhelming during this time. But even worse than caring for small children is going through the change of life with a daughter who is going through puberty. You may imagine being on a deserted island where you have only your inner conflicts to deal with, but most moms don’t have that luxury and that means dealing with a daughter who is as moody, irritable and frustrated as you.

There are changes for moms and daughters during this time, and being aware of the body’s changes helps moms react less and keep communication open between themselves and their daughters. With menopause, the changes in hormones affect sleep, worsen moods, cause acne, worsen headaches, lowers libido and decreases the ability to deal with stress–and what mother isn’t stressed? When girls go through puberty, their hormones are just as imbalanced, which causes bloating, weight gain, acne, fatigue, headaches, and an attitude that clear screams, “Leave me alone!”

There are things women can do that will help both themselves and their daughter(s) get through this life passage together without hating each other or becoming arch enemies. It will demand more understanding on moms’ part because, after all, mom is the adult.

Solutions to calming a house full of hormones:

1. As much as possible, keep family peace as a priority in your home. When you’re feeling irritable, hot, or stressed, understand this is hormonal and temporary. Evaluating if some issue is really necessary to confront “right now” will prevent additional drama.

2. Enlist the help of your partner. Ask them to try to be supportive and understanding. Let them know that sometimes the best way to help will be to just let the anger be vented and not to react. The partner can also say, “Take a deep breath. It will be okay.” That might diffuse a pending explosion, and if it doesn’t, the partner should just put on a flame-retardant suit and back away.

3. Exercise with your daughter. Weight gain is a symptom of both menopause and puberty. Going to an exercise class together or taking long walks or bike rides together can open communication and help you both deal with stress.

4. Get closer with your partner. Getting away with your partner and telling him how you feel can help you feel supported and loved at a time when you are feeling miserable about yourself.

5. Talk to your health care provider if your symptoms interfere with your daily life. No one can function if they cannot sleep or if they suffer severe fatigue. When hormonal shifts become severe, it is wise to talk to your physician. Depression as well as heightened anxiety are frequently seen and are usually easily treated.

With menopause–as with puberty–there is a grieving of the past but also an opportunity for a new sense of freedom. People who breeze through menopause are the same ones who embrace the change and keep a positive attitude. Weight gain, frustration and increased stress are symptoms of hormonal shifts, but that doesn’t mean you have to gain weight, be frustrated or stressed out.

– Preparing your mind to help your body go through the changes is a big predictor in determining how disruptive the change of life will be for you.

3 Ways To Protect Trees From Storm Damage

Share Button

This article is courtesy of PRWeb, please share your thoughts below…..

treeIn their latest article, Precision Tree Services addresses 3 ways that trees experience damage and how property owners throughout Skagit and Snohomish County can actively care for their trees.

The frequent wind and rain in the Pacific Northwest makes it critical that property owners know how best to protect their trees from storm and wind damage. In their latest article, Precision Tree Services discusses 3 specific ways trees can suffer damage. In addition, the article also covers 3 ways property owners can maintain their trees to keep them healthy and beautiful.

The first way trees can suffer damage is through stem or trunk failure. The article states that stem failure can occur after a tree has experienced “decay, pest damage, or deep cuts into the tree’s living tissue.” Damage in the tree’s trunk leaves weak spots that will then increase the likelihood of stem failure during storms.

Another way that Precision Tree Services states that trees can experience damage during a storm is when there is root failure in the roots that provide the tree with the most structural stability. The article states that, “If these roots are damaged, diseased, or constrained during the tree’s growth, they will not be able to sufficiently support the tree.”

The article goes on to list the 3 ways homeowners can protect their trees from storm damage. The first way is by monitoring the condition of their trees. The article states that, “This will help to catch tree wounds or decay before it can become a serious problem.”

One of the best ways property owners can maintain the strength and beauty of their trees is by contacting a skilled arborist to analyze the tree and provide the necessary care. Precision Tree Services offers tree removal, trimming, and pruning throughout Everett, Marysville, and Seattle. For more information, visit their website at http://www.precisiontreeservicewa.com.
