By Connor Christopher

BikingGetting beach body ready is important when you’re going on vacation, as you always want to look your best when you’re away. Whether you’re losing weight or you just want to tone up a little bit, getting your body beach-ready is going to be hard work. Whether you need the best workouts, treatments or diet plans, we’ll give you the best tips on how to get beach body ready for your vacation. If you’re heading to America for your vacation, you’re going to be surrounded by stick-thin women and toned-up men when you’re at the beach, and as well as enrolling on the visa waiver program to enter the country, you’re also going to want a beach body.

Diet

Focusing on your diet is extremely important when it comes to getting a beach body. If you can’t train or you don’t have the motivation to hit the gym, looking at your diet is extremely important. Losing body fat and weight is easy if you’re eating the right food. Eating lots of fish for the good natural oils that are perfect for brain food as well as boosting protein levels, and cutting out the sugar is all important. Sauces such as tomato sauce, soy productions, barbecue sauce, honey mustard and more are a huge culprit when it comes to piling on the calories. Adding healthy fruits and vegetables, and packing on the protein are all important to getting beach body ready.

Mentality

Your mentality is exceptionally important to help you get beach body ready. Picturing the end result and how you want to look is a sure fire way to help you when it comes to trying to get beach body ready. If you have old pictures of yourself if you were a shape that you desire to be now, stick them on the fridge as a reminder of what you can be. Alternatively, get a picture in your mind about how you want to look and keep it there. That way, nothing will come between you and your end goal.

Exercise

saladplateLosing weight isn’t the only way to get beach body ready. You also want to get yourself into a training regime in order to effectively tone up, giving you that ideal beach body. If you are trying to be in the best shape possible, you should do cardio every day. Weights for women are also a good way to train your body weight. Exercise is inevitable if you want to get beach body ready, and although it may seem like a chore at first, you will be surprised how quickly you will get into the swing of things, particularly if you really want to reach that beach-body goals.

Keep Training

Even when you’re on vacation, it’s important to try and keep training no matter what. All-inclusive buffets and relaxation can put you off, but if you suddenly stop, you may find that the beach-body you built up will slowly disappear, leaving you without that lovely body throughout the rest of your vacation. Maintaining that with healthy eating while you’re away or having an occasional jog on the beach in the morning is the perfect way to maintain your beach body throughout your vacation, so you don’t quickly fall back into bad habits. Keep training, and you’ll get to where you want to be.

Don’t Let Your Vacation Sidetrack Your Diet

scaleThe dieting has gotten you ready for vacation, but what to do about the tempting foods once the vacation starts?

Kristi King, registered dietitian with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, offers some tips to keep your vacation diet on track.

“Eating out while on vacation can be tricky. You want to enjoy and ‘let loose,’ but you also don’t want those unwanted calories and pounds to sneak up on you,” said King.

She offers the following tips:

* Plan ahead: check out restaurants near where you are staying and get an idea of the local cuisine and menus.

* If you’re renting a house or condo, plan to have some meals at “home.” This saves calories and money.

* Get to know the locals: Grocery shop or find a local farmer’s market as soon as you get there.

* Order half portions at meal times or, better yet, split the meal with the family.

* Get active: Walk for your sightseeing tours, swim in the ocean or hotel pool or find other fun activities such as hiking and biking that will get you moving and burning calories.

* Don’t obsess: Don’t stress over calories on vacation. Enjoy the local cuisine and allow yourself small amounts. A good rule of thumb is to limit local treats to one per day.

momdaugtherbikeStudies Show That Active Travel is No Longer a Luxury, but a Necessity for a Healthy Mind, Body and Spirit.

As the leader in active travel, VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations has successfully operated bicycling and walking tours throughout the world for over 44 years, creating culturally immersive experiences for American travelers. With numerous studies showcasing the health benefits of an active vacation, VBT President Gregg Marston, an avid cyclist, walker and traveler, has compiled a list of the top five healthy reasons to book a trip that will benefit your mind, body and spirit.

1. Social Health – According to the Global Coalition on Aging, group travel builds social ties, which studies have suggested helps nurture interest in life-long learning. With a small-group design, VBT tours deliver authentic personal interactions. Whether it’s enjoying a picnic lunch at the home of a Spanish family on the way to Cordoba or the warm encounters with local families during home-hosted lunches and dinners, group travelers share wonderful memories that will linger long after returning home.

2. Brain Health – According to Dr. Paul Nussbaum, Ph.D., ABPP, travel promotes brain health and builds brain resilience. Preventive Medicine found that people who cycled frequently benefitted from improved mental well-being. While traveling with VBT, learning experiences are endless from a private cooking class at one of Hoi An’s most popular restaurants to guided tours with local experts in Cesky Krumlov and Pompeii, wine tastings in Bordeaux, and demonstrations with artisans on the Croatian island of Brač.

3. Lowering Health Risks – Active travel is proven to lower many health risks such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, heart disease, colon cancer, breast cancer, depression levels and more, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee. Furthermore, staying active and traveling throughout life has physical, cognitive and social benefits that lead to a healthier aging process according to the US Travel Association. Offering an easy-to-moderate pace, each VBT traveler can create their own activity level with the flexibility to stop along the way to enjoy a glass of wine against a backdrop of rolling hills of Tuscany or the swaying Cypress trees in Provence.

4. Spirituality – Beyond the excitement of new discoveries, travel offers the opportunity to enrich and transform one’s perspective. A stroll along verdant gardens in Capri, a peek into the historic chapels in Bellano or a bike ride along Lake Champlain opens the mind, exhilarates the senses and refreshes the spirit immeasurably.

5. Necessity over Luxury – Nearly half of Americans agree that travel is not a luxury, but a necessity according to TravelEffect.com. Plus, surveys from the Global Coalition on Aging show that after being on a vacation for a day or two, 89 percent of people are able to leave the stressors of work behind and relax. That’s a major reason why 98.6 percent of VBT’s guests plan to travel again with VBT due to the fulfilling experiences they enjoyed during their active vacation.

In addition to numerous health benefits, VBT travelers will be fully immersed in their destination. All VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations are led by local Trip Leaders who provide insight into the region’s customs and traditions, as well as help facilitate authentic cultural experiences. Continually recognized as the best value in active travel, VBT’s tour prices include all accommodations, use of custom bicycles or walking poles, many meals, two expert local trip leaders, unique sightseeing and cultural activities, and on-tour vehicle support.

Eating Healthy On Vacation Is Totally Possible

By Cole Millen and Kac Young Ph.D, ND, DCH

healthychoiceTravelling itself can be frustrating, exhausting and challenging. Add into the mix trying to eat healthy while being a guest in someone else’s country. Some of us just prefer to “give up and give in” to temptation and deal with it when we get home. If you don’t want to fall into that trap, here are some suggestions that may help you stay healthy, not gain weight and be true to yourself so you can truly enjoy your vacation

· Buy food in advance, prepackage a meal or two to fend off hunger. If you experience delays or changes in your itinerary, you’ll have staples to get you through. I always carry my soy, rice or almond cheese with me, so I can have local chefs make me a healthy pizza when I arrive.

· Make a list of the foods you want to eat on your trip then research restaurants online in your destination country where you know you’ll get what you want. Having a list handy will make your journey easier, especially if you arrive tired.

· Pack Healthy Snacks. One of the simplest healthy snacks a person can take on vacation is an assortment of fruits. Apples, pears, peaches, oranges, bananas, unsalted nuts are all excellent healthy snack choices. Power bars can also be helpful but beware that some of these bars have too much sugar and fat with little nutritional value. Choose bars with ample fiber and protein minus the fats and sugars. Wholegrain crackers are also good idea to take along.

· Buy Healthy Food on Arrival. If your room has a refrigerator you’re in good shape. If not, call the desk and ask for one. Low fat yogurt makes a great healthy snack, lean deli turkey or chicken meat and whole grain breads, plus low sugar fruit cups, applesauce round out a handy snack feast. Buy healthy drinks and take advantage of the complimentary ice most hotels offer. Neighborhood supermarkets and grocery stores are a good source of fresh food and also give you a sense of the local culture as a bonus.

healthyheart· Take Advantage of the Hotel’s Amenities. Watch the continental breakfasts as they can be alluring with their sugary cereals and fattening pastries, but they usually also have free yogurt, healthy cereals, boiled eggs, and oatmeal. Some hotels may even offer room service options that are healthier than their restaurant. You probably can’t take along your slow cooker unless you’re traveling by car, but you can use a slow cooker to prepare healthy, nourishing meals in your room. Often times determining which of the hotels have the amenities necessary be difficult so don’t be afraid to call head and ask questions before you book.

· Choose the Healthiest Meal You Can at a Restaurant. Going out to eat is a fact of vacationing, but you can still make the healthiest selections in a restaurant. Avoid battered, breaded, fried, or deep fried dishes as well as rich, buttery sauces. Fish is often the leanest meat, especially if it has been grilled, seared, or baked. Bright-colored vegetables are often healthier than their duller counterparts, and all-you-can-eat establishments should be avoided. Buffets are a toss-up because they have food exposed to the elements and self-service and afford the temptation of eating too much. Be sure you read the menus carefully as restaurants often designate certain meals as healthier than others.

The bottom line is that you can stick to your diet, your healthy food preferences and your tastes with a little research and a little planning ahead. The way to make your vacation a dream is to make healthy eating easy and follow our well-traveled tips.

Eating Right On Vacation

By Cole Millen

saladplateSo, you have dieted in preparation for a great vacation and you are looking good. How are you going to keep the weight off during your relaxation time? Not to worry. It is possible to eat well on vacation and come back without having to fight the scale for your pre-vacation body.

Leaving
You might not know it, but your mission to keep the weight off starts before you are on vacation and while you are leaving. You will be tempted to catch a quick meal on the road or at the airport because you had to spend time getting all of your last minute vacation needs together. Either pack yourself a healthy snack from home or fill up on healthy food before you go. You will be too full to hit the fast food places at the airport which will save you both calories and cash!

Room Service
Forget about ordering in and room service when you are at the hotel. Hit the Internet and find the nearest market. Stop there for healthy foods at mealtime and put healthy snacks that do not require refrigeration, such as fruits, in your hotel room. If you have a fridge in your room, stock it with the foods you were eating on your diet. Above all, skip the drinks in the hotel and your mini-bar. The calories in these will destroy any diet. Both your midsection as well as your credit card will be extremely grateful!

Reading Reviews

One of the major factors that I found that has made a tremendous impact in my travels, was when I began to read the reviews on the areas and restaurants of where I was staying before hand.

One of the major factors that I found that has made a tremendous impact in my travels, was when I began to read the reviews on the areas and restaurants of where I was staying before hand. Without this knowledge, it is practically a free for all when you get to where you are going and this is what often leads to unhealthy eating and expensive spending. I did a poor job of this in the past and paid the ultimate price with weigh gain. My most recent trip, I stayed in a hotel and I searched the destination’s reviews and ended up with the best option for my personal eating habits. Looking up the reviews on your hotel and surroundings can be a difference maker when you are trying to be healthy on your travels. They offer important information such as whether or not they have a pool to exercise, continental breakfast, workout room, healthy restaurants available/ nearby, as well as local markets. Make sure to do your homework prior to your departure.

Restaurants
Unless you are vacationing alone, you are likely to wind up at a restaurant at some point, even if you do not want to eat out. That is okay. Go straight for healthy dishes like salad and fish. Order steamed vegetables in lieu of starches like bread, pasta and potato. Do not order anything fried. If you are at a restaurant that sells huge portions, ask for a take-out container as soon as your meal arrives. Dump half of it in the container and save it for later. You will be less likely to overeat if you make that commitment right away.

girljogExercise
You do not have to hit the gym while you are on vacation, but go right ahead if you enjoy it. You will get plenty of exercise just enjoying your surroundings. You are probably in a nice climate in a beautiful location if you are on vacation, so make the most of it. Go for a walk or jog. Go rafting, hiking, swimming or even shopping. Just stay on the go when you can. When you cannot, stick to salad and lean protein that day.

At the end of a vacation following these tips, you will be sure to come home healthy and with a little more cash in pocket.
