How You Can Fight Common Sleep Disorders Like Snoring Or Sleep Apnea

sleepSleep disorders affect a large percentage of Americans, up to 40 percent as some studies have suggested, debilitating one of our most precious resources: sleep. We need sleep to perform even our most elemental tasks not to mention the more difficult ones like cognition, concentration, athletics or even operating a car. Getting a good night’s sleep is tantamount to being able to perform well in life and sleep disorders like snoring or sleep apnea make getting a good night’s sleep a constant struggle. However, there are plenty of tools you can use to combat snoring and sleep apnea and the rest you deserve.

While there are a plethora of known and unknown sleep disorders out there, ranging from night terrors, to narcolepsy, to work-shift sleep disorders, to restless leg syndrome, insomnia, snoring and sleep apnea are three of the most common. But in order to look at ways to fight these common sleep disorders, we first have to understand what causes them in the first place.

Insomnia is a very common sleep disorder, so common in fact that there really isn’t one specific reason for it; the causes depend upon the person and can range from anxiety, depression and other mood disorders, to lifestyle problems like diet and lack of exercise to stress to allergens. And though there are many prescription drugs available that can help you get to sleep, most of these medications leave you feeling groggy and unrested. However, simple lifestyle changes can sometimes be enough to pull you out of your insomniac funk and get some sleep: exercising regularly, amending your diet to include more natural foods, eating a bed-time snack of dairy and carbs, meditating, getting into a sleep schedule—all of these can bring about solutions to insomnia.

snoringSnoring and sleep apnea are often comorbid and have some of the same underlying causes and treatments. Snoring is the result of occluded breathing passages in the nose or throat; sleep apnea is when breathing is abruptly halted during sleep, resulting in gasps and oxygen depletion, and if untreated can have dire consequences. Both have their own different kinds and causes. The occlusion in snoring is often caused by blockage of the throat, either through fatty tissue, allergies, posture or a general degradation of the throat muscles; it’s most commonly found in adults over 40, the obese or overweight, chronic users of alcohol, cigarettes or other drugs/medication and more often in men than women. Sleep apnea has a couple different kinds: the first, obstructive sleep apnea is a result of the same blocked airways seen in snoring, and snoring is usually precipitant; the second kind is called central sleep apnea and has to do with failures of the central nervous system; the third is a combination of the first two and is called, appropriately, complex sleep apnea.

Thankfully, snoring and sleep apnea can be treated in many of the same methods. Losing weight and getting your body back to its recommended weight is one of the best ways to fight these sleep disorders, as is eliminating or minimizing alcohol and cigarette use—especially in the last couple hours before bed. You can also help to control these sleep disorders by adjusting your sleeping position, sleeping on your side or stomach instead of your back. If allergens are the reason, making your bedroom into a hypoallergenic chamber might be the way to go; which might mean that your dog or cat has to sleep elsewhere at night. Certain vocal exercises have also been found to alleviate some of the symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea as they build up the muscles in the throat. Snoring And ADHD In Children

vectorboysleepSnoring in children has been a concern for years. Snoring may be a sign of obstructive sleep disorder, where the breathing passage is blocked and less air/oxygen gets to the body. Recent studies point to snoring being involved in ADHD.

Occasional snoring due to a cold is not a problem. Of concern is the constant loud snoring, the child that gasps for breath in sleep, or the periods when the breathing actually stops in sleep.

Common causes of snoring include:

* Allergy
* Sinus infection
* Enlarged adenoids
* Enlarged tonsils
* Acid reflux

The snoring child who doesn’t get good sleep often shows:

* Irritability
* Unpleasant breath
* Poor attention
* School difficulty
* Poor growth
* Inattention

I hear this scenario all the time: “Before she snored, she was sweet, laughing, with nice breath. Now she doesn’t smile, she is cranky, inattentive, tired and sleepy. She is not thriving. Teachers complain of her poor work.”

Dr Judith Owens, head of the Children’s National Medical Center Sleep Clinic reports in the Journal of Pediatrics that loud snoring in toddlers could signal serious underlying health problems like hyper activity and attention deficit disorders.

Recent studies have pointed to behavior problems, inattention, and crankiness in children as part of the ADDH syndrome. In one study, after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy done for snoring and mouth breathing, 50% of the children who were diagnosed ADHD before surgery, no longer had symptoms. Here the diagnosis of ADHD was made by careful behavioral, cognitive and psychiatric tests. Thus, a child with loud snoring that exhibits ADHD behavior may be simply sleep deprived and may recover when the sleep problem is corrected.

Some children with snoring show poor growth. This can occur because the nose and throat are obstructed so that eating is tasteless and uncomfortable.

Recall when your nose is plugged; the savory hamburger has no real taste because you can’t smell it with a plugged up nose. Worse, continued snoring can change the physiology and make snoring worse. For example, obstructive snoring can develop into acid reflux.

Note that when a child snores from age 4 to 5, that is about 20% of her entire life span; the important part in growing and learning. Constant mouth breathing can effect the jaw/face development and may necessitate the need for orthodonture.

For the snoring child, therapy consists of reducing nasal blockage and reducing blockage from enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Typically:

Judy S. age 6 was seen because of snoring, and poor appetite. Mother described her being cranky and falling asleep in class. On examination she showed sinus infection and enlarged adenoids. Often parents are told not to worry about the child who snores, since they will outgrow this. I feel it is best to clear that condition in order to give the child the best health.

Snoring? Try The Ten Cent Cure

snoringSnoring is not a joke. It can lead to Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Snoring can get worse, almost like a cancer: like a cancer, you want to clear it early.

You snore when you nose is blocked, like having a cold or allergy. You snore when you are overweight and the extra fat weighs down the soft palate of the throat. You snore when your tonsils and adenoids are enlarged and interfere with the air passage.

You snore when acid reflux irritates the throat and voice tissues.

The nose/sinuses are the number one cause and is best treated by restoring good nasal cilia movements. Often the nasal cilia that normally move bacteria out of the nose and sinuses don’t get back to normal speed after an infection or surgery. When nasal/sinus cilia are too slow, you get postnasal drainage that swells tonsils, adenoids and throat.

To speed nasal cilia:

* Drink warm tea/lemon and honey

* Hum low pitched like “ooommm”

* Use pulse wave irrigation that pulses at speed for best cilia movement.

* Exercise such a jumping jacks, running, and others.

Weak throat muscles may cause snoring.

To strengthen throat muscles:

Repeat A E I O U with tongue in three positions:

1. touching roof of mouth far back
2. touching roof of mouth in middle
3. touching back of teeth

Each vowel and position should be 3 minutes. Can be spaced out over 24 hours.

Play the didgeridoo. That takes a lot of throat muscle.

Think of this as a weak flabby arm and you do weight lifting to build up muscles and get rid of flabbiness.

Enlarged tonsils: If tonsils remain large, correct the postnasal drip that may be the cause by pulse wave irrigation; on the same device, the Hydro Pulse™ is a special throat irrigator attachment for massaging the tonsil and throat area in order to shrink swollen tissues.

Sleeping on the left side is best. That way gravity pulls the soft palate forward and open; on you back, gravity pulls it back to block. To stay on your side in sleep, secure a tennis ball to the back of an undershirt to encourage you to turn over when you are flat on your back. (This is the 50 cent cure)
