Woodloch will host its second annual “Carnival for a Cause” to raise money for JDRF

diabeteswordWoodloch Pines Resort has partnered with JDRF, the only global organization with a strategic plan to end Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), with the ultimate goal to turn Type One into Type None.

During the weekend of May 1st – 3rd, 2015, the social activities department from Woodloch Pines, an all-inclusive family resort in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, will host its famous home-grown carnival. Deemed “Carnival for a Cause,” a portion of all proceeds raised during the weekend will go directly to JDRF. This is the second year in which the resort is supporting the cause. In 2014, resort guests, staff, and local friends raised over $15,000 in donations. Since the family resort’s opening back in 1958, Woodloch’s Carnival has been a beloved activity enjoyed every summer by many guests.

Woodloch Pines shares a special personal connection with JDRF’s mission to bring awareness to Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in hopes of one day finding a cure for the disease. The Pocono resort’s longtime Social Director, Joey Ranner, has a granddaughter who was diagnosed with T1D in November of 2011. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults and lasts a lifetime. The disease can have devastating effects such as: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, heart attack, stroke, and pregnancy complications.

“Seeing how Type 1 Diabetes affects young children, like my granddaughter Jillian, makes me want to do something to help. One of the best resources that our family found after Jillian’s diagnosis was JDRF. We’ve participated in JDRF’s ‘Walk to Cure Diabetes’ for the past four years to help raise money to aid the admirable efforts of this great organization,” says Ranner. “Since Woodloch is and always has been about putting family first and giving back to the community, partnering with JDRF is a natural fit.”

The all-inclusive family resort’s “Carnival for a Cause” will embody a carnival’s midway atmosphere. At the event, which will take place on Saturday, May 2nd, guests can play the unique games for a chance to win prizes, including the grand prize of an all-inclusive getaway to the Pocono resort. Alongside the midway games, guests will be entertained by a balloon artist, magician, live music, food vendors, and inflatable bounce houses (weather permitting).

In addition to the carnival, other special events for the weekend include:

– A live cooking class featuring tasty yet healthy low sugar options

– A “Dance-A-Thon” where Woodloch Staff and guests will join together to dance the night away in order to raise donations

– A benefit 9-hole shotgun golf tournament at The County Club at Woodloch Springs

diabetesword– The East Central PA branch of JDRF will also be hosting their annual “Walk to Cure” event at PNC Field in Moosic on May 3rd. Registration information is available at EastCentralPA.jdrf.org.

During Carnival for a Cause weekend, all-inclusive rates start at just $199 per adult per night. For more information or to book a stay during, please visit http://www.woodloch.com/jdrf or call 1.800.WOODLOCH.

The Award-Winning Family Resort Kicks Off its Second Annual 12 Days of Giving

newsThe holiday season is always festive at Woodloch Resort, an award-winning family resort in the Pocono Mountains. Annual traditions like the Yule Log Hunts, carriage rides, light shows, festive decorations, and Winter Olympics are things that the guests have come to expect. A new tradition is the 12-Days of Giving, which kicks off the true spirit of the holidays and is often contagious.

For the second year in a row, the team at Woodloch Pines has developed an extensive list of ways that they can give back to the local, national, and even international community. “The goal of the 12 Days of Giving effort is to celebrate the true spirit of the holiday season with the hopes that others will catch the spirit and choose to participate alongside us or create their own ‘giving’ efforts to spread the spirit,” explains John Kiesendahl, owner and CEO of Woodloch Pines.

This year, the team at Woodloch Pines has developed an extensive list of ways they can help in the days leading up to the holidays:

1. Salvation Army Coffee Drop – The Woodloch Social Staff will be stationed outside the local Salvation Army location, handing out hot coffee and Woodloch Bakery sweets to workers, shoppers and donors.

2. Operation Christmas Child – Shoeboxes filled with shoes, toys, and school supplies that Woodloch staff has been collecting will be delivered to children around the world.

3. Adopt a Family – Woodloch Pines will provide a very happy holiday for a few local families.

4. Blanket the World – Woodloch Pines staff has set up a blanket drive at select retailers throughout Pike and Wayne counties to collect blankets for shelters in the area.

5. Angel Tree – Staff members can purchase holiday gifts for children in need by choosing an ornament from the tree, located in the staff lunchroom.

6. Show on the Road – The Woodloch Crew will perform a strolling Christmas show through a local senior center.

7. Random Tabbing – Woodloch Pines will pick up the tab of unsuspecting diners at The Boat House Restaurant every day for one week. Additionally, a portion of our net revenue from that week will be donated to the family of Cpl. Dickson #PSPSTRONG

8. Toys for Tots – Woodloch is collecting toys for military families from staff and guests.

9. Thank an Employee – The Woodloch Family will reward several randomly selected employees with a full tank of gas and a few extra dollars for the holidays.

10. PSPSTRONG – Woodloch staff will bring baked goods and coffee to the local state police stations in Hawley and Honesdale.

11. Fill up gas tanks – Woodloch Elves will swipe Mobile Gas Cards for unsuspecting drivers who pull into The Market at Woodloch to fill up.

familyvector12. Cooking Class– The culinary team at Woodloch Pines will be providing a cooking class to local senior centers from the Hawley, Hamlin, and Honesdale areas. Avery Bus will provide transportation to Woodloch Pines for all participants free of charge.

The family resort’s annual array of winter holiday offerings is always fun-filled and festive. Seasonal activities include:

* Yule Log Hunt available during December weekends

* Holiday Craft Fair featuring over 40 local crafters providing a one-stop, artisan, hand-made holiday shopping experience

* A picturesque wagon ride through an illuminated trail on their annual “Festival of Lights” tours

* “Gingerbread Wars” where guests assemble a task force and compete against other teams in a very unique culinary decorating contest involving elaborate gingerbread houses

Award-winning family resort adds a level of intensity to its Active Vacations Program starting this May

familyjogFamily travel trends have started to take an interesting swing toward the adventurous. In order to meet those needs, Woodloch Pines Family Resort is ready to roll out its VENTURE program this spring. Showcasing new adventure partners, expanded locations and extended hours, the Woodloch Pines team is ready to help families rise to the challenge this family-travel season.

“We have been seeing an increase in families wanting to take advantage of our adventure sports,” stated John Kiesendahl, owner and general manager of Woodloch Pines. “Beaches are for wimps! Families want adventure, challenge and unique ways to bond and reconnect. Of course we also offer a sandy lakeside beach for post-adventure relaxation,” continued Kiesendahl.

With strong support and loyal followers, the Active Vacations Program will be gaining intensity this May, just in time for National Family Wellness Month as it adds new activities and offerings to help vacationing families become more aware of how fun and easy it can be to keep an active lifestyle. The VENTURE program will be available beginning in April and will include the following:

· An expanded Archery Course to include evening archery

· New Stand-Up Paddle Boards available beginning Memorial Day Weekend for private lake experiences or group-led challenging exercises.

· Delaware River White-Water Kayaking Excursions with new partner Northeast Wilderness Experience*

· Hot Air Balloon Adventures for couples and families with new adventure partner Endless Mountains Hot Air Balloons*

· Challenging forest Paint Ball course*

· Zip-lining

· Climbing Wall

family· Nature Trails

· Trap Shooting

· Mountain Biking

· Water Skiing

· Lake Kayaking, Paddle Boats and Sail Boats

The Active Vacation Program takes a three-pronged approach to family wellness and awareness. Physical, emotional and nutritional components need to be addressed when aiming for integrated family wellness. The program includes:

Physical activities:

· Family Fitness Classes

· Family Fitness Exercises (done individually), developed by kids fitness expert, Steve Ettinger.

· In addition, there is a Passport to Fitness which highlights all of the social and physical activities that promote an active lifestyle. Passport holders will get “stamped” after participating and will potentially win a “Woodloch Medal” when the passport is full.

Emotional activities:

· Keep it simple, spend time with family

· Reconnect in meaningful ways with loved ones

· Bond-building games designed to reconnect and encourage families to unite together
Nutritional options:

· Woodloch Pines has partnered with Greener Fields Together™ to create a program that provides local meats and produce and promotes sustainable food sourcing.

· The family-style meals now feature kid favorites that are revamped to pack in nutrition. For example, macaroni and cheese and spaghetti entrees feature a vegetable-infused whole-grain pasta. Apples are options instead of French fries, and sugar-free desserts are now on the menu.

Designed to be informative and educational, the Active Vacations Program has been blanketed throughout the Woodloch Pines experience. New resources have been added to the website as well as to collateral materials and will continue to be added as the program evolves. The new VENTURE offerings and enhanced Active Vacations Program will kick-off in May 2014 during National Family Wellness Month.

All Active Vacation programming is included within the all-inclusive vacation price. Special May rates offer packages starting from $149 per person per night.
*Certain VENTURE program activities require a minimum age/height to participate and may have limits on the number of people participating. Those marked with an asterisk *also have additional fees that apply, and advance reservations are required.
