9 Dangerous Kids’ Health Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

By Julieane Hernandez

groupkidsChildren are such fragile beings in terms of health, and with good reason, too. Since their bodies are still developing, any slight cough or sneeze could be an indication of a much larger sickness, like asthma or bronchitis. But as the sickness continues in the body, its resistance are strengthened so when the same strain attacks again, the body can easily fight if off.

In most cases, this doesn’t mean that you should let the child suffer without any medicine for cough and cold. You should definitely bring them to a doctor for a prognosis and prescription. But if you don’t know how to notice these things, here are 10 dangerous kids’ symptoms you should never ignore.

1. Coughing
As common as this may sound, coughing could be an indication of either an irritation in the throat (which could lead to choking, or a bacterial or viral infection. If it’s a phlegm-y cough, check the color. White means it’s possibly viral; any hue of green means it’s bacterial.

2. Colds
Any kind of sniffling should be immediately looked at. Aside from the fact that there might be something lodged in the child’s nose, phlegm build-up in the nasal passages could also be an indication of a bacterial or viral infection. Cough and colds almost always go hand. It’s nearly impossible to separate the two.

3. Fever
When a child’s body temperature goes up, it means that his/her body is fighting an infection. Immediately bring to your child to the pediatrician when this happens.

4. Intense headaches
If a child is suffering from a powerful headache that keeps him/her from opening their eyes, bring them straight to the doctor. You need to rule out the possibility of meningitis.

5. Diarrhea and 6. Vomiting
Any expelling of fluids from the mouth or watery stool are symptoms that should not be left ignored. Dehydration will occur and cause more complications. Rush your child to the hospital. It might be a sign that he/she needs IV fluids or medication to stop these symptoms.

twokidsun6. Loss of hearing
We live in a media-abundant generation, where kids as young as 5 can have access to a plethora of devices such as tablets, iPods, smartphones, computers, etc. The use of these machines early on can contribute to early hearing loss during the teenage years.

If your child complains about hearing loss during these formative years, immediately bring them to a doctor and minimize the use of such devices for your child’s sake.

7. Breathing problems
Difficulty breathing could mean that a child is suffering from croup (an illness that results in noisy inhalation), asthma, or a lodged piece of food in their throat or lung. Proceed by immediately calling your doctor to get an idea of how to proceed. A piece of food stuck inside a lung must be removed via surgery.

8. Unnatural thirst
It is quite normal for children to ask for water after a long day out with their playmates. However, if their thirst has become very insatiable, immediately go to your doctor to rule out the possibility of diabetes. An increased thirst is one of the many symptoms of diabetes.

9. A rash
Rashes are usually harmless skin irritations that go away. Sans symptoms, they can be ignored. But, if other signs show up like swelling in the face or lips, it might be an allergic reaction. Your doctor may be able to prescribe an antihistamine or allergy shot to keep it at bay.

Then next time you see any of these symptoms, remember this article and always check with your doctor to take the necessary steps. Sound off in the comments section below I you know other child symptoms to look out for.

5 Medications Kids Should Never Take

Share Button

pillsWhen you pick up a bottle of over-the-counter medication to treat symptoms of an illness in your child, you do so with the belief that anything you can purchase from a pharmacy shelf is probably safe for use. While over-the-counter medications may be marketed to kids, not all of them are actually safe for every child, and some can even cause severe adverse reactions. Despite the rigorous testing involved in the approval process before a drug hits the shelves, there are some medications that simply aren’t safe for young children. Before you reach for a box or a bottle to treat your sick child, make sure that the substance you’re planning to use isn’t one of these dangerous drugs.

* Aspirin – For adults, aspirin can be a helpful medication. It has fever-reducing and pain-relieving qualities, and can be of assistance in a wide range of situations. For kids under the age of 19, however, aspirin can be the cause of a rare but serious health condition that can be fatal. If your child is suffering from a fever, you may want to treat it with acetaminophen or ibuprofen, but make sure that you’re administering only age-appropriate doses and following the directions carefully. Also, be sure that you look for an “aspirin free” listing on the label of any medicine you purchase over the counter, because some kids’ medications still contain aspirin despite the associated Reye’s Syndrome risk.

* Cough and Cold Medicines – When your child is suffering, you want to do anything you can to alleviate her pain. While you may seek to treat the symptoms that are causing her discomfort, it’s important to note that the American Academy of Pediatrics specifically warns against using over-the-counter cough and cold medications for toddlers because their research indicates that they don’t actually have an effect on cold symptoms and can even be harmful if a dose is slightly miscalculated. Rapid heart rate, convulsions, hives and even death can result from overuse of a cold medication, so it’s best to contact a physician or pharmacist if your child has a severe cold or cough, rather than attempting to treat it with OTC drugs.

groupkidswbg* Ipecac – Once a staple of the home medicine cabinet, syrup of ipecac has been used in the past to induce vomiting when poisoning is suspected. The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend use of this folk remedy, as vomiting has not been shown to be effective in the treatment of poison ingestion cases and can actually cause more harm. If you do have syrup of ipecac on hand, it’s advised that you throw it out and prevent accidental poisoning by locking up potentially harmful substances instead.

* Medications Meant for Another Age Group – Giving your child a larger dose of medication intended for infants can be just as dangerous as administering a small dose of one intended for an adult, which means that neither practice is safe or recommended. Medications intended for infants are more highly concentrated than most people realize, making it easy to inadvertently over-dose your child with them. Instead, find an age-appropriate treatment or contact a medical professional for advice.

* Anti-Nausea Medication – In cases of dehydration caused by excessive vomiting, your child’s doctor may recommend an anti-nausea medication or write a prescription for one. Otherwise, you should never administer them to your child. There are risks involved when your child takes any medication, and episodic vomiting is rarely severe enough to warrant taking that risk with your child’s health.

Some of these medications may be recommended by a physician or pediatrician. Generally speaking, this is the only time when it’s safe to administer them to your child. Unless you’re under direct instruction from your child’s primary care physician, it’s just not a good idea to take the risk and administer them to your little one.

Why Fast Weight Loss Never Lasts

By Stavros Mastrogiannis

bigpantsEverybody wants to lose weight fast, who doesn’t? The diet industry knows this, which is why most of the diets focus on delivering fast results. Well, how is that working so far? If you look at the statistics, not that well. Although most people do lose weight fast with most diets, over 95% of them regain all the weight back. So my question is what is the point of losing weight fast if you are going to gain it back again?

Here is the problem with losing weight fast. In order to lose weight fast, you must make big changes in your life all at once. The fact is that the more changes you make in your life at once the more uncomfortable you get, the more uncomfortable you get the faster you burn out and revert back to your old habits thus gaining the weight back.

The mistake many people and even many fitness professionals make is that they wrongly believe that once people see results they would be motivated to keep going. Well if that was true then how come most people who lose weight gain it back? They did get the results they wanted after all, and yet they still revert back to their old habits and gained the weight back.

The fact is that the best results in the world would not keep you motivated if the results were achieved through a method that overwhelmed you. This is the case with most diets. Although they get people the results they want, they are overwhelming and sooner or later people quit and revert back to their old habits.

So what is the answer? How can people lose weight and keep it off? The answer is very simple. First of all you need to realize that weight gain is a symptom not the problem, the problem is your habits. Your habits got you in the shape you are in today and if you are not happy with your current shape you must change the habits that got you here.

http://yourhealthjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/kickhabit.jpgThe only way to make permanent changes in your habits is to make them one at a time. Whatever change you make has to become habitual before making another change. Make enough changes in your habits and the weight will come off. Yes, with this method it will take you a little longer to start seeing weight loss, but at least once you lose the weight you would never have to worry about your weight again.

Only through permanent changes in your eating and activity habits you can lose weight and keep it off. Unfortunately the way most diets approach weight loss it is almost impossible to develop new habits and that is one of the biggest reasons why, in spite the 78,000 diet books on the market today we are still losing the weight loss battle.

5 Steps You Have Never Tried To Release Your Weight For Good – Part 2

scaleThree: Your Relationship with Weight:

How would you describe your relationship with your body, as a loving BFF or the worst kind of enemy you can have? My body is my BFF, my companion. If it were a person she would totally support me and allow me to do whatever I want, whenever I want. She would be strong and flexible, flowing through each and every day. I show up as BFF to my body as well. I always listen to her and say loving things when she feels down. I tell her how much I love and appreciate her. I accept her as she is today without asking her to change. Can you imagine how my body would react if I was constantly putting her down? Or ignoring her? What if I beat her up everyday and told her she was not ok? It’s time to let go of losing weight and turn your attention to how you relate to your body.

Start by checking out my healing ebooks to learn how to have a healthy relationship with food, exercise and your body and then begin transforming how you relate to each of them. It’s time to begin an intimate, loving friendship with each of them. Let go of losing weight, or changing how you eat or exercise, it’s irrelevant. Your relationship to each of these is what the universe is asking you to heal.

Four: Getting Down to the WHY Of It All:

Once you start healthy relationships with these areas, take inventory of why you want to lose weight. What do you want to get from it? Do you want more ease and strength? More confidence and personal power? The ability to wear different clothes? Having your ideal body is only part of the equation and the truth is you only perceive it to be part of the equation. It may or may not be involved with the end result. But the only way to find out is to let go of the how and when and simply focus on what you really want.

For example, 2 years ago I really wanted to take NLP. All 3 levels of NLP cost around $10,000 and I didn’t even have $50 in my bank account and a mound of debt. I didn’t beat myself up, I just stated in my mind that it was something that I really wanted and then I let it go. I had a free ticket to attend an event taught by an NLP teacher and went ahead and registered for it, excited for the opportunity to grow. A couple days later I logged on to Facebook and saw that I was tagged in a video. Turns out everyone that registered for a ticket (free or paid) was entered in a drawing and he was giving away stuff each day. And one day he was giving out all 3 levels of NLP for free. Guess whose name came out of the hat? That’s right, me. Notice that I didn’t focus on the $10,000 it would take to get NLP, I simply focused on what I really wanted. I didn’t care how I got it. I also didn’t attach myself to it. I truly let it go and said this is something I want and I don’t know how to make it happen. And so it was delivered.

Let go of losing weight and get clear about what you want from weight loss specifically.

Five: Uncover Hidden Fears Buried Deep in Your Subconscious:

The last thing you want to do is look at all the things you wrote that you want. A smaller size, more confidence, etc. Then write out what will happen if you got it. We are looking to see if there are any hidden fears inside of these wants.

An example of this could be, “I want to be a smaller size. If I was a smaller size I would get a lot more male attention which I don’t want”. Now you see that even though you want to be a smaller size you have a conflict buried in your subconscious. So it won’t happen. Begin uncovering any and all fears behind actually getting what you want and expose the truth.

5 Steps You Have Never Tried To Release Your Weight For Good – Part 1

mirrorThe revelations continue from the book I finished yesterday by Nick Pfennigwerth. He stated that you will only manifest the amount of money that you are not overly excited about. And then I looked at what I was doing when using visualizations or vision boards. We are taught to cultivate the feeling of already having that we desire…. well I thought about how excited I would be, how incredible I would feel, how I would be jumping up and down and doing the money dance… because that is what financially free people do right? Uh.. wrong! People who are not struggling with money don’t do the money dance every time they get money because it’s normal. Of course they get money, of course they have excess… duh!

One: Accurate Visualization Techniques:

So let’s look at this from the perspective of weight. How are you doing your visualizing when you imagine your ideal body? Are you jumping up and down because you moved down a size? Are you shocked that you were able to lose weight while enjoying all the foods you love? Is it a miracle that you skipped a week of exercise and lost weight? Well if so, then it will never be your every day normalcy. I don’t get excited because I ate food and didn’t gain weight, I expect that to happen. I would be shocked if my weight ever went up not down. Can you see how important this is?

Two: Expectation:

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being it would be a miracle if I lost weight and 10 being it would be a miracle if I didn’t… where would you rate yourself? How expectant are you of losing weight in a manner that doesn’t suck? If you really devoted your life to only focusing on making this present moment as amazing as possible (and dieting has no part in that) can you expect that to be enough to release the weight for good?

If you are low on the scale start with small steps. If believing that weight loss will happen simply from living an incredible life is too far fetched, start with the idea that if you are truly listening and honoring your body then you definitely won’t gain weight because it has no reason to communicate to you through excess weight. Weight is just a way to get you to wake up, pay attention and change something. So if you are already in the process of doing that, it doesn’t need to continue to climb.

Once you see those results you can move to, of course my body would release weight because I am creating an ideal life for myself. Excess weight doesn’t fit in with this new inner world I am creating so I don’t need to hold on to it anymore.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this article shortly…..

It’s Never Too Late (Or Too Soon) To Live Your Dream

By George and Sedena Cappannelli

familywalkDo you remember dreaming that one day you would be a great writer, painter, or composer? Do you remember wanting to invent a remarkable new product, pitch a perfect game, find the cure to a debilitating illness, rally the troops to save the day, become a great actress, enter the courtroom to right an injustice, or throw your hat into the political ring to make a difference? Do you remember dreaming of bringing a brood of children into the world and raising them with incredible amounts of love and consciousness? Do you remember wanting to play music or sing melodies that issued from your heart? Do you remember dreaming of being a coach or a teacher, a dancer, choreographer, cook, carpenter or fisherman, an astronaut or mountain climber, a religious or spiritual leader, a humanitarian or a healer?

Perhaps in your case, you did not know exactly what you wanted to do with your life, but you felt a longing you could not put a name to, a restless tug to do something more and different than others around you were doing.

Perhaps both of these things were and still are sometimes true for you – specific longings to do or express yourself in a given way or a restlessness that issues from not knowing quite what you want to do or how. If this is true for you, then we invite you to spend a few moments with us exploring the possibility that the next stage of your journey not only can be more satisfying and rewarding, but also more in alignment with the dream you came here to manifest.

The first step we recommend in this exploration is to take a little time to be alone, a little time to listen to some of the hints and promptings that come from that “still small voice” within you. If you are willing to take this first step, we believe you will soon discover that this longing, this dream that you once had is still very much alive inside you. We also believe you will discover that by directing your attention to that place where your dream still lives, you will either rediscover or discover the beginning of a pathway that can – no matter how old or young you are – lead you to live more of the life you were born to live.

The Power of Your Dream

Our personal experience confirms the fact that when we are in touch with our personal dream and stay true to its call – stay true to what is called our destiny – we are not only more creative, impassioned, and energetic, but we are also more involved in our own lives, connected to others and in tune with the natural rhythms of life. When we are in touch with our dream we are also more concerned about the well-being of others, this planet and all of the species that reside here. In short, in our experience being in touch with our dream is an essential key not only to living more consciously and aging wisely, but to fulfilling what we call our spiritual promise or heritage.

friendsFor more than 30 years we have been experimenting with and testing this premise not only in our personal lives, but through our work with hundreds of major organizations and with thousands of individuals who have attended both our organizational and public programs. During this time we have come to verify that those who are in touch with and living even portions of their dream are more content, impassioned, engaged, loving, health and successful. In addition, following the call of our dream is not just important to us as individuals, it appear to be equally essential to the grand scheme of things.

Yes, our dreams hold a blueprint for a unique and successful life, in fact for the precise life many of us long for and believe somewhere in our hearts is possible. And yet it may not be and often is not the life we are living. We could, of course, spend months exploring why this is true. But in the end, we believe what matters most is not why, but what we can do to correct this misalignment.

Our exploration indicates that this blueprint is often as close as the longing we feel our hearts. Indeed, we have discovered that it doesn’t matter whether it has been days or decades since we have last paid any attention to our dream, it is always there, literally as close as our next breath.

If you have been faithful to your dream you know this to be true and we applaud and celebrate your efforts. But then again, our applause is unnecessary for you already know the value of the journey that was written indelibly in your heart long ago. If you have not yet been as faithful to your dream as you have wanted to be then you also know or, at the very least, sense that what we are saying is true. For we know that you, like us, periodically receive, sometimes quietly, sometimes insistently, those whispers, prods, prompts, and even demands that you to pay more attention from that “still small voice within.”

So here in this moment we invite you to pause and take a little time to touch that place in your heart where your dream still resides. We ask to get quiet enough to hear what that “still small voice” is saying so that you, too, can once again regain that glint in your eye, that spring in your step and that flow of loving that is not just a possibility, but your right and privilege as a spiritual being who is currently having this physical experience called life.

Indeed, no matter what your experience has been – whether it has been the hot and dedicated pursuit of a dream that has been clear and compelling for a long time or whether you turn away and are now living with that restlessness, knowing that there was or is something else, something you sense is more inspiring that you want to do – we invite you to lean back in your chair, close your eyes, and for just a few moments go to that quiet place inside you that is not limited by the boundaries of physical time or practical considerations.

Please do not just read these last few paragraph and move on. Stop, take a few, slow deep breaths and give yourself the gift of getting back in touch with your dream. You will, we know, be deeply grateful to yourself for doing so. Indeed, you will be taking your next steps to honoring what the poet Mary Oliver has called, “this one wild and precious thing called your life.”

yogaposeThere are, of course, numerous techniques that can assist you to get in touch with this inner experience. Different forms of slow, focused breathing; various reflective and meditative practices; the use of mantras and simple phrases spoken on the out-breath and the in-breath; a walk in a favorite woodland; a run along a wild and beautiful beach; moments spent gazing into the innocent eyes of your child or that remarkable being you are spending your life with. Any and all of these practices and a host of others will do. Indeed, whatever allows you to connect to your heart and be available to the guidance that comes from within you – anything that allows you to remember your dream, is perfect.”

Even if this first re-connection to your dream is only a vague sense, a hint of a direction, the barest impulse, or a fleeting image, allow yourself to glimpse it, sense it, feel it. But do not hold on too tightly or be disappointed if it does not materialize as a complete game plan for the rest of your life. Just let it unfold in whatever way is appropriate and for which you are ready. Just touch into that special reservoir of energy that is your dream and let it evoke in you the beginnings of a renewed sense of hope, purpose, and passion.

And if by chance you find yourself suddenly feeling the impulse to blow the dust off those paintbrushes; open the cover of the piano or of your toolbox; or dig out that notebook you tucked away on the bottom bookshelf of a bookcase, that notebook that is full of ideas for that humanitarian project, that business venture, or that novel you once wanted to create, then go ahead.

Truly, no matter how old you are or what you have chosen to do thus far in your life to earn your daily bread, if you give yourself permission to touch even the edges of that dream that lives inside you, we are confident that you will experience a sense of rightness, of alignment with something that is deeply familiar. Of course, you may also experience some pangs of regret for not listening to that “still small voice” more often and listening instead to those who told you that you had to be reasonable and responsible, that you needed to find a practical and proven way to support yourself, and eventually, perhaps, a family. But don’t let that regret stop you from re-connecting to your dream. Just keep following the hints and impulses. Just stay in touch with that sense of alignment and naturalness and let it be your guide.

How can you be sure you are at the right place, the place where your dream resides? You’ll know. So welcome it. Be grateful to it for the fact that the light of wonder and longing is alive and well inside of you. You may also want to keep this reconnection private for a while. You know what they say about “protecting vulnerable beginnings.” So hold it sacred and nurture it, and above all, be willing to allow these first moments, these new re-connections to grow stronger and come more alive inside of you.

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

And even if you do not know where these first hints or images will lead you or how to bring them even more to life, let that be okay. The only thing that matters now is your willingness, your availability and openness. The only thing that matters now is that you honor this re-connection and allow these first stirring to lead you step by step toward that greater unfoldment of the life that you were born to live.

So we celebrate your courage in taking these steps and leave you with a remarkable quote from Oriah Mountain Dreamer, the author of The Invitation. We also leave you with our sincere hope that you will also keep some of encouragement we offer and extraordinary words from this gifted writer close to your heart. And most of all, we hope you will celebrate the very distinct, special and unique notes that you and only you have to come to this earth to add to the great song that is life.
