It also increases social acceptance as unhygienic people are regarded as unhealthy for the society. Often parents start off with the education early on with their kids which in itself is a good practice. Though there is a long list of habits that must be inculcated but here we will talk about 5 most vital personal hygiene habits that your kids must have.

Hand wash

The careless attitude is the cause behind majority of infections (gastro and colds). Kids lay their hands on a lot of contaminated places and eat with the same hands without washing them. The first and the foremost hygiene habit that every kid must practice is to wash hands before eating and after coming from outside. It is also important that they follow the right technique. They should use an antibacterial soap or a hand wash, lather and then rinse for about 15 seconds starting from wrists to the nails. This drains off the potential germs.

Bathing

Bathing should be followed like an everyday ritual. Bathing not only checks bad body odor but it also protects them from many diseases. There should be regular bath time. Many kids can shower on their own from the age of five. Parents can supervise so that they clean themselves well. The teenage is the most vulnerable age. With the anatomical changes happening to the life getting active, the teen’s body goes through a lot. Infections thus become commonplace. Athletic teens may encounter some fungal or bacterial infections, it is important that they control the spread by using best anti-bacterial or anti-fungal body soap. Regular hair-wash is also essential to check any dirt and germ build-up.

Brushing teeth

Parents must tell them how bad breath can make their friends shoo off. This will motivate them. Flossing for a minimum of three minutes and swishing with clean water will furnish a healthy smile. Brushing at night will check the bacterial growth by night which may be caused due to the food particles remaining in the mouth, if kept unclean.

Cover sneeze and cough

Sneezing and coughing in an appropriate manner is a good practice as doing the same at somebody’s face may annoy him. Therefore, it is important that the kids learn to block the passage with the elbow if there is no tissue available. It would be even better if they wash their hands using an antibiotic soap.

Hygiene of the genital parts

Both the girls and boys must keep their genital parts clean. This becomes even more important when the hormonal changes kick off during the puberty stage. Even before they enter this stage, they must know the importance of changing their inner garments regularly and keeping the parts clean and dry. Keeping them wet for long can cause fungal infections. Though using anti-fungal body soap may help, but prevention is better than cure. Hence personal hygiene habits are recommended.

Remember, kids learn from their elders. Therefore lead by example. Parents must practice these personal hygiene habits by themselves so that the kids learn and follow them.

There are as many reasons why kids won’t stay in their beds as there are kids themselves, and as many motivations for coming to find a parent after waking abruptly as there are sleepless nights. Finding a method that works for your family may require a bit of trial and error, but with a bit of dedication, you’ll find your child sleeping the night away in his own bed before you know it.

* Find the Root of the Problem – The first step to getting your child to successfully spend the night in his own bed is to find out why he’s having trouble doing so in the first place. Some kids will get out of bed at night because they’re afraid of imaginary monsters, other because they’re simply awakened by something and aren’t able to self-soothe until they fall asleep again. To solve this particular problem, you’re going to need to uncover the root of it and work around what you discover.

* Start a New Routine – Allowing a bit of wiggle room in your child’s bedroom routine can have a major impact on the success or failure of your ability to keep him in his bed at night, especially if he’s getting up because he’s having bad dreams or is afraid. Make room for a “monster check,” take the time to work a bedtime story into the routine, or allow him to wind down a bit by starting the routine earlier and working towards the goal of getting in bed with less pressure.

* Encourage Self-Soothing – If part of your child’s established routine includes you spending time in his bed or in his room until he falls asleep, it may be time to rethink your strategy. After all, a child who’s dependent upon you in order to get to sleep will naturally come searching for you when he wakes up and can’t accomplish the task on his own. Start working on helping your child to fall asleep on his own and you may find that the bulk of your problem is already solved.

* Keep Your Language Positive and Optimistic – When you talk to your child about staying in his bed, make sure that your language is upbeat and positive, rather than stern or overly authoritarian. Make spending a night in his bed sound like the major milestone it is, not something he must do because he’s afraid he’ll be punished or you’ll be disappointed.

kids* Work Gradually Towards Your Goal – You may not be sleeping in a child free bed the night you start working towards that goal. You may not even be there a week from starting your routine. It’s important to keep the end game in mind, though, rather than focusing on immediate results. After all, you want a lasting solution, not one that’s temporary.

* Get Kids Involved in the Process – Giving your child a bit of ownership over the situation by letting him pick out new sheets, select a special animal to sleep with or even have a bit of say in his bed time can go a long way when you’re trying to reach an understanding about sleep. Let your child know that you want him to be excited about this new chapter in his “big boy” life, and give him some control to reflect that status.

* Make a Game of The Situation – If you set up a system of rewards for every successful night in bed or make each night seem like a fun, new challenge, you may find that you’re having better results than if you’re just trying to lay down the proverbial law to your struggling child.

* Maintain Consistency – When little feet come padding into your room in the wee hours of the morning, it can be easier to just let it slide than to get out of bed and meet the challenge. Consistency is key, though, because you don’t want to send mixed messages to your child. Just get up, lead him back to his bed and avoid engaging with him along the way. With consistent repetition, your child will learn that coming to your room is not a means of getting the results he had in mind.

* Be Patient – It’s not easy to keep your cool when you’re sleep deprived and frustrated, but losing your patience and lashing out is a surefire way to inspire a setback. Make a concerted effort to be patient and understanding, rather than exasperated and angry.

* Reward Successes, Don’t Punish Setbacks – Instead of shaming your child or punishing him when he’s struggling, make a point of rewarding his successful efforts. Understand that your child wants you to be proud of him, and wants to earn your approval, even though the change you’re asking him to make is a big and sometimes scary one.

Lesson learned: Never chew sugar sweetened gum

In medical school, I found that I could stay awake and study if I chewed Bazooka bubble gum. Worked better than coffee or anything else. When I started medical school, I did not have a single cavity. By the time I was 35, I needed 3 root canals– not fun and expensive and time consuming. I talk to my children about this and taking care of their teeth– they assume that their teeth will always be strong and white. Not so, unless you put in the care and maintenance at an early age.

Lesson — if you must chew gum, make sure that it is sugarless. We have so many options now-a days.

I wish I knew back when I was in elementary/middle school the importance of nutrition and how it works back. I use to eat junk food and drink soda just like every other child. What a difference a few years makes… Little did I know the damages such foods do to your body and how long it would take to recover. It’s truly amazing how these foods are made and packaged. Makes you wonder why some are even legal to sell.

I learned my lesson as I became an elite level athlete. Performance at that level is measured in fractions of a second. So many times I was off just a bit and it cost me several opportunities to represent the US in international competition. I eventually got there but only after loosing a few years of eligibility. Needless to say, I was close to aging out and all the while I kept thinking I should have managed things better earlier.

Back in time, I would have demanded more of myself and eaten better foods regardless of what my friends were eating. There is no supplement to the body you were given, so you must take care of it to the best of your ability. Now one way to ensure I hold myself accountable is teach related topics in my classes. Not only does this provide me with some rewards, it truly improves the quality of instruction and participation amongst the students.

My message to kids today that I wish I knew back then is that life is not a “bowl of cherries” as my mother chanted. Expect disappointments and life’s inevitable letdowns. As Ben Affleck said when he accepted the Oscar for his Argo, Best Picture of the Year, “You have to work harder than you think you possibly can,” an emotional Affleck told the audience at the Dolby Theatre. “You can’t hold grudges. And it doesn’t matter how you get knocked down in life, because that’s going to happen. All that matters is that you’ve got to get back up.”

If I could turn back the hands of time I would better prepare myself for failure and disappointment by setting more realistic expectations. You can work very hard and hope to reach the heights yet be very aware that you may not land as high as you shoot.

As a child and family psychologist, today I preach this mantra to parents. If you give in and submit to your child’s demands all of the time or even some of the time, you are setting-up your child for disappointments in the real world. No one will submit to your child’s charm, protest, or commands.

The saying “do as I say not as I do” resonates with children so I have always felt that you have to show children health practices rather than preach to them.

1. Your message to kids today that you wish you knew back then what you currently know now.

I used to believe that good health involved running hills and lifting weights and pushing my body to its limits. Now I realize that few children will do that and I was an exercise snob. What I learned was the curative health power of walking and remaining active throughout the day. Health through activity.

2. How did you learn your lesson or what was your lesson? Did you get hurt, did you upset someone, did you get scared?

I was seriously injured in an accident that left me in a wheel chair for 6 months and unable to walk for 2 years.

3. What you would have done differently back then if you could turn back time.

I would have like to have seen health messages praising the benefits of movement vs the constant barrage of “no pain no gain”.

4. Do you convey this message to children in your life today?

I do that by walking all day with a TrekDesk Treadmill Desk while I work. Actions speak louder than words.

It is very interesting to read a ‘local take’ on childhood obesity from this UK town, whose children are being labeled as among the fattest in their country. According to the article, “While across Sunderland, 21.1 per cent of Year Six children – 10 and 11-year-olds – are fighting weight issues, well above the national average of 18.7 per cent.” Obesity is on the rise all over the world, part of defeating it is acknowledging it, then coming up with a game plan. This article mentions how they are looking for a solution. So many children already show risk factors for heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and weak joints. Sunderland youngsters are among the fattest in the country, the Echo can today reveal.

And in one city ward, a quarter of reception age children – four and five-year-olds – are overweight or obese.

While across Sunderland, 21.1 per cent of Year Six children – 10 and 11-year-olds – are fighting weight issues, well above the national average of 18.7 per cent.

The areas which have the highest levels of childhood obesity are Millfield, Hetton, Castletown and Washington Central.

But it is in the Sandhill ward where the biggest concerns are, where one-in-four reception age youngsters are deemed overweight.

The figures come amid calls for fizzy drinks to be heavily taxed and junk food adverts banished until after the watershed.

Nicola Young, specialist weight management dietician at Sunderland Royal Hospital, said: “There is no one answer to this, but a lot of it has to start with education at an early age.”

In a bid to tackle the problem, GPs, school nurses and other health professionals in the city have referred more than 160 families to the Lifestyle, Activity and Food programme (LAF) based at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The programme aims to help support and guide families in areas including preparing a balanced meal, taking regular exercise and teaching them the importance of an overall healthy lifestyle.

Sunderland’s Child Poverty Needs Assessment identified a correlation between low income and a greater risk of obesity.

With 45 per cent of Sunderland residents living within 20 per cent of the most disadvantaged areas across England, rates of childhood obesity are soaring.

Professor Stephen Singleton, interim chief executive and medical director for NHS North of England, said: “We know that obesity often leads to more serious health problems later in life, such as diabetes and cancer and increases the risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke.”

Wearside’s adults aren’t fairing much better in the fat-stakes with 3,456 being referred by their GPs to the city’s Exercise Referral Programme, dubbed fitness on prescription.

In total, a quarter of adults in the city are now overweight or obese.

Millions of pounds is spent each year on Wearside tackling the growing problem but dieticians say simple factors like learning to cook a meal could make the world of difference.

On learning she had Type 2 diabetes and would need to adopt a healthful diet for the rest of her life, Lavon Swygert did the only thing that felt natural.

The 13-year-old hid at home and gorged on potato chips.

“I’m not going to lie,” she said. “There were, like, 12 little packs of Pringles.”

Lavon’s response underscores why doctors are so troubled by the sharp increase in Type 2 diabetes that is emerging among adolescents and teens. It reveals the medical toll that doctors have long feared from the nation’s youth-obesity epidemic. Worse, it pairs a disorder that can be managed only by disciplined diet and exercise with a young, impulsive population that likes to snack.

More than 20,000 adolescents and teens in the United States now have Type 2 diabetes, compared with almost none 20 years ago. And the worst might be ahead. Diagnoses of the disease among young people could climb 400 percent by 2050, according to a federal estimate released in December, because the disease is tied to the rising rate of childhood obesity.

Type 2 diabetes, diagnosed mainly in adults until now, is the gradual erosion of the body’s production of insulin, which leaves excess sugar in the bloodstream and gives rise to a host of complications and organ failures. It’s among a growing number of adult health problems that are increasingly afflicting kids, including hypertension and high cholesterol.

“It’s like your child has the body of a 70-year-old man,” said Dr. Claudia Fox, an obesity specialist at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital.

Part of the problem is that Type 2 diabetes often comes with relatively few initial symptoms, so teens can go years without a diagnosis. Even when the problem is discovered, as in Lavon’s case, teenagers often don’t initially feel the consequences of straying from diets and treatments.
