Years ago before the Paleo and Ketogenic diets came to light grains were a staple ingredient. However, campaigns such as clean eating have given the grains a bad rap and turned them into a dreaded food. In this article, I’ll try to reveal some facts about how favorable grains are! But first, let’s discuss the basics!

What Are Grains?

Grains or Cereals are the edible seeds of certain grasses. These can be further categorized, common types of grains are:

  • Wheat
  • Millets
  • Corn
  • Barley
  • Oats
  • Brown rice
  • Quinoa

Grains are famous for their carbohydrate content. Although carbs are a vital source of energy, yet the term connected with grains gives a somewhat negative impact. If we go a little into details we find out that there are two types of grains:

  • Whole grains/ the unprocessed ones

The seed in its original form consists of:

  • Bran– It is a source of Fiber, minerals, vitamin B, and antioxidants
  • Endosperm– It contains starchy carbohydrates and proteins
  • Germ– This is the most nutritious part that includes not just carbs but fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

During processing of the grains, the bran and germ of the kernel are cut off. This means most of the nutrition is eliminated hence refined grains are unhealthy whereas whole grains are beneficial for health.

Another common belief is that grains contain phytates which combine with minerals in the body and prevent them from getting absorbed. For this reason, maybe grains should be avoided? Well, that isn’t true either!

Like nuts and seeds, whole grains also contain phytic acid. However, it only poses a danger if such foods are consumed continuously in large amounts along with a poor diet. So they are perfectly healthy, and you can eat them as much as you’d like.

Carbs Will Make Me Fat!

I have seen a lot of people avoid carbs as they believe it will make them fat and will cause blood sugar to increase. Again I’d like to point out that these characteristics vary with the type of carb you consume. As whole grains contain complex carbohydrates, the digestion takes time, and thus they do not cause the blood sugar to spike.

Low Carb Diets Are Better For Weight Loss!

Case in point: TLIF surgery – a minimally invasive way to fuse together painful vertebrae so they heal into a single, solid bone – entails its own unique approach and purpose, helping many chronic back pain sufferers find lasting relief, according to Praveen Kadimcherla, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Atlantic Spine Center.

TLIF is just one of several forms of minimally invasive spinal fusion surgery, also known as MIS fusion. But the terminology surrounding this surgery, how it’s done and what benefits it offers can seem confusing to those with spine problems that aren’t effectively treated with more conservative measures such as medication, rest or physical therapy, Dr. Kadimcherla says.

“While MIS fusion surgery has been commonplace since the 1990s, TLIF is among the most innovative newer approaches to back surgery available today for lower back pain,” adds Dr. Kadimcherla, who completed two spinal surgery fellowships and is a published author on spine disorders and treatment. Dr. Kadimcherla explains 5 points that are important to understand about TLIF:

What is TLIF?

TLIF is short for oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusion, offering both a name and a description of its technique. “It’s the angle taken when the surgeon gains access to the spine from a posterolateral view, which is the approach taken through a patient’s back and just to the side of the vertebrae,” Dr. Kadimcherla notes.

Who undergoes TLIF surgery?

This type of surgery, which stops vertebral bones in the spine from painfully “grinding” together, is typically advised for patients coping with ongoing lower back pain from a wide range of causes, including:

* Bulging discs

* Degenerative disc disease, a chain of events in the discs that occurs naturally as we age

* Disc tears – a painful crack or tear in the outer shell of a disc when it begins to toughen or dry up

* Failed back surgery, which occurs for a variety of reasons such as inaccurate diagnosis or improper healing

* Facet joint syndrome, which is degeneration and arthritic changes occurring in facet joints between vertebrae commonly caused by aging and wear-and-tear

* Foraminal stenosis, a narrowing of the spaces between vertebrae due to displaced bone or soft tissue

How is TLIF performed?

Like other MIS fusion procedures, TLIF is done with special tools known as tubular retractors, which are placed into a tiny incision and through soft tissues to the designated spot on the spine. But unlike other types of MIS fusion, TLIF surgery is approached through the patient’s back just to the side of the vertebrae. Since such a small incision is used, the surgeon doesn’t have to move, remove or alter major muscles, normal bone structures, or nerve bundles. At the area needing repair, the surgeon implants material such as a bone graft that maintains proper spacing of the vertebrae as the bones grow together. The entire procedure typically takes about 90 minutes or less.

What is recovery from TLIF like?

Because TLIF is both minimally invasive and minimally disruptive to tissues surrounding the spine, the procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis and recovery is swift. “Many patients are able to get up, walk around and return home within a few hours after surgery,” Dr. Kadimcherla says. “After the initial recovery, many patients benefit from a course of physical therapy to help their back muscles become stronger and more flexible.”

What are the advantages of TLIF?

The benefits of TLIF are compelling, Dr. Kadimcherla says, including minimal blood loss during surgery and a lower risk of needing a blood transfusion during this technique compared with traditional “open” spinal fusion surgery using a much longer incision. Additionally, TLIF patients typically need less pain medication after surgery.

“Many TLIF patients resume their normal recreational activities within weeks – not months or longer – because this procedure is so kind to surrounding tissues,” Dr. Kadimcherla says. “It offers remarkable results.”

Why It’s important To Keep Your Children Hydrated In The Summer

waterIf you’re a parent, chances are you’ll let your kids play outside in the warm weather this coming summer. Paddling pools, swimming pools and ice lollies will be a common theme I imagine, but there’s one aspect of summer that’s a common theme that parents certainly don’t won’t; and that’s children becoming dehydrated. It can often happen because young children aren’t as aware of staying hydrated as adults are and this can lead to unwanted symptoms because of their lack of water intake? So why is it important to stay hydrated and how can we encourage our children to drink more water, especially when it’s scorching weather outside?

Why do we need to keep our children hydrated?

First of all, water makes up around 75% of our body make up and found in the inside of cells inside us. Therefore it’s essential that children take on plenty of water because its plays a vital part in keeping together cell structure and has a massive influence on waste removal from their body. Another useful feature of water in the body is that helps to distribute nutrients all throughout and also helps to keep body temperature at the optimum level. Both of these are so important for young children so encouraging them to drink little and often is probably the best way of doing it.

How can we encourage our children to drink more?

There’s a few good ways of encouraging children to drink more and to be honest, none of them are that scientific! Always keep a water bottle close by so they can take regular sips if they’re feeling slightly parched. Ice lollies are a good way of giving them some extra fluids as well but be careful not to overdo it as they can often contain sugary flavors and additives that might make them a bit more hyperactive then usual! Another good way is to get a bottled water cooler or a smaller alternative installed in your house so they can go and get fresh ice cold drinking water when they want to. Maybe even add a touch of orange squash to the water to give it a touch more flavour! Again, as with the ice lollies, don’t add too much squash to the mixture as it often contains additives that you probably wouldn’t want to give to your children on an hourly basis.

humanbodyThe sphenoid makes up part of the bottom of your skull. The pituitary gland sits on top of the sphenoid bone inside the skull. The pituitary gland is an endocrine gland that secretes important hormones vital to the body’s proper functioning. Hormones secreted from the pituitary gland help control the following body processes: growth, blood pressure, breast milk production, sex organ functions in both male and female, thyroid gland function, conversion of food into energy (metabolism), water regulation and balance with the kidneys, temperature regulation, and pain relief. Some aspects of pregnancy and childbirth including stimulation of uterine contractions during childbirth can also be affected. If the sphenoid bone is not in its proper position many of these hormones won’t be secreted in the proper amount from the pituitary gland.

Sphenoid subluxation or misalignment can cause migraines, headaches, depression, memory problems, brain dysfunction, dyslexia, learning disabilities, bed wetting, nightmares, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, color blindness, psychological disturbances, and moodiness. There can also be problems associated with taste, smell, hearing, vision, speech problems, dry mouth, teeth grinding, dental malocclusion, eye pain, deviation of the eyeball, eyelid weakness, balance issues, problems with tongue and or sucking, asthma, sinusitis, neck and lower back problems and scoliosis.

brainYou are born with 306 bones in your body give or take a few because of anomalies. There are so many bones to choose from that are important to the human body functioning properly, but this bone when misaligned or out of place can affect almost every bone in the body. Unless you are a healthcare practitioner you probably haven’t even heard of it before.

The bone that I am referring to is the Sphenoid bone. The sphenoid bone is one of the cranial bones that make up the skull. It is an unpaired cranial bone located right behind the side of both eyes. Why the sphenoid bone? The sphenoid bone has also been called the keystone bone, because it touches or articulates with every cranial bone in the skull. If the sphenoid bone is misaligned then quite possibly every bone in the skull could be misaligned too. The sphenoid bone comes from the Greek word sphenoeides or wedge-like. The sphenoid bone is one of the seven bones that articulate to form the orbit of the eye. Its shape somewhat resembles that of a butterfly or bat with its wings extended.

Most everybody thinks that the cranial bones do not move. The Cranial Academy and Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation found that there is life-long mobility of the cranial bones and sutures in healthy human beings. Sutures are the spaces between the cranial bones. Cranial bones can move in small amounts and do possess an inherent rhythmic motion. According to a study by Nelson, Sergueef and Glonek this rhythmic motion or oscillations occur 4 to 6 cycles per minute. Osteopathic physicians report the same oscillation rhythm in cranial bone motion in their studies too. Even NASA research has stated, “Although the skull is often assumed to be a rigid container with a constant volume, many researchers have demonstrated that the skull moves on the order of a few micro millimeters with changes in intracranial pressure.” This movement of your cranial bones and sutures is essential for health.

How Important Some Sunscreen Is While Playing In The Sun

sunDoctors list three things that people need to do to make sunscreen an effective part of their sun protection routine – apply the lotion liberally, put it on early enough so that it has time to be absorbed before you go out, and use it every day.

Despite this, many of us find excuses to skip out on one or more of those things. We don’t want the lotion to be caked on, so we don’t use enough. There’s not enough time to put it on before going out, so we’ll just do it in the car. We even decide that it’s not necessary to use if we’re not going to be out that long.

Unfortunately, using sunscreen in this way makes it less effective and leaves us open to all of the potential damage that can come from the UVA and UVB rays of the sun. What does that mean?

Sunburns. We all know about sunburns. In fact, for many of us, that was probably the primary reason our parents used when teaching us that we had to wear sunscreen or sunblock before going to the neighborhood pool. Usually these aren’t serious or long-lasting, but they can be quite painful and embarrassing.

Wrinkles. When we say that the sun is tanning us, what it’s really doing is drying out our skin. Over time, this can lead to skin that makes you look much older with many more lines and wrinkles than for someone with healthy skin at your age. It also causes different kinds of wrinkles – both coarse and fine – which can make it seem like your skin has lines everywhere. The sun does this to us because too much exposure can destroy our collagen and elastic tissue – a process called elastosis.

Mottled pigmentation. What does mottled pigmentation mean? That exposure to the sun can actually cause specific areas of your skin to look lighter or darker than the rest, giving you a mottled or almost spotty look.

Yellowing. It’s not uncommon for very young babies to have a slight yellowing of their skin that’s called jaundice. It comes from not getting enough sunlight, which makes sense since you’re supposed to keep infants out of the sun as much as possible. Ironically, adults can have their skin become yellow – or sallow – by getting too much sun.

Freckles. Here’s one you probably weren’t expecting. One of the little-known effects of excessive sunlight is that your skin might actually develop freckles.

Benign tumors. You know that the UV rays of the sun can cause skin cancer, but did you know that they also play a role in creating benign tumors? Since they’re benign, obviously they’re harmless, but that doesn’t mean that they’re comfortable or aesthetically pleasing.

Skin lesions. That probably sounds bad enough, but it gets worse. These aren’t just any skin lesions, but cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions. If you start to see these, it’s because the immune functions in your skin have just stopped working. Not a good sign.

Skin cancer. The ultimate fear of too much exposure to UV radiation. You don’t need me to tell you that skin cancer can be deadly, but even at its best it’s a dangerous, debilitating, and expensive disease to deal with.

These are the kinds of things you have to look forward to if you decide that you don’t really need to use sunscreen or can pick and choose on a whim.
