Paying Attention To Your Meals Will Help You Lose Weight

bigpantsLife is busy for everyone, whether you are a stay-at-home mom or the CEO of a corporation. So many of us eat on the go. We grab a burger and fries from the drive through, scarfing it down in the car or we stand at the kitchen counter bolting down our meal. Even something healthy like a smoothie can be gulped in the car on the way to work. Honestly you may be thinking – so what? What does this have to do with weight loss? As long as I’m not eating too many calories, what difference does it make?

More than you may have imagined. First of all, studies show that eating fast blocks the hormones that signal you are full and satisfied and lead to overeating. But there is another reason I want to focus on.

When you inhale your food, rather than treating it as a meal that you are aware of, and enjoy, savoring how it looks, smells and tastes, you will find that even though you may feel full physically, not long after you are searching the refrigerator for something else to eat! You see, your cells are starving and sending the message that they still need nourishment. They always say you eat with your eyes first – and there’s a lot of truth to that!

You can overeat and be obese yet in fact still be malnourished at the cellular level and many people are. This is part of the reason why. Choosing calorie-dense foods with little nutritional value is the other reason. But even if you eat healthy food in this mindless way, you won’t get the full nutritional value.

exercisebrainYou really have two brains – one in your head and one in your digestive tract! You may think you can fool the one in your gut, but you can’t! If your brain doesn’t fully experience the taste, smell, texture, pleasure and satisfaction from your meals, it interprets that missed experience as hunger! Even if you just filled your belly!

So as often as possible, sit down at the table, pay attention to the food, enjoy it, savor it and eat it slowly and mindfully. Even if it is a smoothie – savor the creaminess, flavor and aroma. Beginning the meal with a prayer of thanks is a perfect way to slow down and be intentional about fully experiencing your meal. Not only will you improve your digestion, you will also find losing weight becomes easier – and much more enjoyable!

“I encourage you to pay attention to how you eat the majority of your meals: mindfully or mindlessly.”

Top 10 Indian Spices That Help You Lose Weight

By Shishir Rao

weightlossballtextIt is indeed surprising that so few of us turn to Indian spices for combating weight loss (or other problems for that matter), especially considering that Indian medicine has pre-existed its western counterparts for many hundred years in the form of ayurveda. Though the knowledge probably has little value today in the field of applied medicine, it is not so when it comes to the diet and healthy nutrition. With that in mind, here is a list of 10 Indian spices that have proven great for weight loss. Many have benefited from this knowledge for centuries; it’s your turn to reap the advantages now.

1. Black Pepper (Kali Mirch): The hot and spicy pepper is a great way to lose weight since it contains piperine, which speeds up the body’s metabolism, meaning that fats and carbs which are eaten get burned faster by the body to release energy instead of getting stored as fat. Besides, it also improves digestion, which results in better absorption of nutrients by the body.

2. Cardamom (Elaichi): Renowned for its ability to prevent gas formation and the consequent bloating of the stomach that it brings about, cardamom, like most other ‘hot’ spices, also increases metabolism in the body.

3. Turmeric (Haldi): Besides the usual speeding of metabolism, turmeric proves extremely beneficial towards treating indigestion, gallbladder troubles, high cholesterol (it reduces bad cholesterol in the blood stream), inflammations, etc. It is sometimes also believed to help with diseases like arthritis, Alzheimer’s, asthma, dermatitis, psoriasis and yeast infections.

4. Mustard seeds (Sarson): Mustard seeds have the x-factor when it comes to boosting metabolism since it is shown to have thermogenic properties that ensure that your metabolic rate stays high even after several hours of consuming the spice.

5. Asafoetida (Hing): A common ingredient in traditional Indian medicine, asafetida is well known for its anti-spasmodic properties, besides aiding digestion and being a sedative. Not only do these properties make it a weight loss agent, but it is also a strong antioxidant and may help in combating cancer.

6. Cloves (Laung): Like other hot spices, this thin long spice, with a slight bulge on one end, is a great way to increase the body’s metabolism rate, which means you burn calories quicker and stay in shape longer.

spice7. Cinnamon (Dalchini): Consumption of this delicately sweet and spicy spice proves healthy nutrition since cinnamon controls blood sugar levels (i.e. maintains the balance of insulin levels) in the body and thus in turn reduces the desire to eat fattening sugary foods.

8. Coriander seeds (Dhaniya): Sometimes also known as cilantro, this spice is a great way to improve digestion and also controls bad cholesterol in the blood, which not only does a ton of good for your heart health, but aids in weight loss as well.

9. Cumin seeds (Jeera): Cumin seeds too boost metabolism and improve the working of the digestive system; not only this, but they also strengthen the immune system and help in flushing out toxins, which provides for better nutrient assimilation.

10. Fennel seeds (Saunf): A spice that is often chewed after Indian dinners, fennel seeds aid in digestion and quicken metabolism. It is one of the oldest known spice for weight loss in the west, and was introduced as such as far back as 1650 by William Coles in ‘Nature’s Paradise’.

Omega-3s Help Ease Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Share Button

By Dr. Barry Sears

eyeMedicine often not as complicated as we are led to believe. Let’s take a condition known as macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness after the age of 50. More than one million Americans have this disease, and there is no known cure. In this disease a small area of the retina known as the macula begins to degenerate. As it does, the central part of vision becomes obliterated, objects lose their contrast, and color sensitivity is lost. It’s just a matter of time before one becomes legally blind.

Since the retina is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a lot of researchers have tried supplementing the diet of patients with macular degeneration with fish oil, but they have constantly failed to find success. In fact, a major five-year study published this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association announced that omega-3 fatty acids have no benefit in treating macular degeneration. But what if they gave a placebo dose? Then you would expect placebo effects.

Several years ago I began working with my collaborators in Cyprus to use much higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids based on the recommendation in my 2002 book, The OmegaRx Zone. The initial results were published last week in PharmaNutrition. Considering that there is no known treatment for macular degeneration, a 10% improvement in vision would be considered a major medical breakthrough. If you had a 25% improvement in vision, you might be considered for the Nobel Prize. Our results were that 100% of the patients had a significant improvement in their vision, and that the higher the dose, the faster the improvement. When I presented the data at a major medical conference a week before the publication of the paper, my toughest question to answer was “the data are too good to be true”. To paraphrase Bill Belichick, coach of the New England Patriots, I responded, “It is what it is”.

omega3So why do high levels of omega-3 fatty acids work? Macular degeneration is an inflammatory condition. The omega-3 fatty acids put out the inflammatory fire in the retina that allows the tissue to heal and regenerate. But you need a therapeutic dose. It just turns out that dose is much higher than researchers have used in the past several years. Ironically, the dose of omega-3 fatty acids used in our study was virtually the same levels as used by Harvard Medical School researchers to reduce inflammation nearly 25 years ago as published in the New England Journal of Medicine. How soon they forget. Without adequate levels of omega-3 fatty acids, the inflammatory fire will simply keep on burning, making it impossible to regenerate the tissue.

There are two things you want to protect as you age. One is your brain, and other is your sight. Adequate levels of omega-3 fatty acids will do both; placebo levels of omega-3 fatty acids will not. That was true 25 years ago, and it is still true today.

fruitswhite3. Make Sure That You Drink Plenty of Fresh Fruit/Vegetable Juice

Now don’t feel that drinking juice will result in you becoming a super human being who can’t get any sort of diseases. But you should look at it as something you should do to help improve the health of your kidneys and your overall health and well being.

The other great benefit of drinking fresh vegetable juice on a regular basis is that it will allow your digestive system to become extremely efficient, which of course will result in it being able to absorb all the excess water in your body with great ease, and at the same time get rid of all the waste products that are floating about.

However if you happen to be a person that is suffering from kidney stones then you must totally avoid making juice from spinach, collard greens and beets. The reason for this is that these vegetables are naturally higher in oxalic acid which actually causes more and more kidney stones from being made.

4. Make Sure You Start Eating Clean and Healthy

You need to know and appreciate that all that happens inside your body is directly the result of the foods that you put in your body.

If you happen to eat foods that are unhealthy and toxic in nature then it will ultimately affect the organs of your body in a negative way.

This is why I highly encourage each and every one of you to totally avoid consuming processed junk foods from now on.

So what should you be focused on eating?

Well, as your primary concern is to better the health of your kidneys… you should focus on those foods that will help keep them as healthy as possible. So in this case I’d recommend that you focus on eating things such as green tea, garlic, parsley, celery, asparagus and fish.

5. Work Hard To Take All The Right Supplements

healthillustratedThe number one supplement that I’d recommend you take is that of cranberry extract. The reason I’d recommend this is because it will actively protect your bladder while at the same time keeping the overall health of your kidneys in great condition.

So how is this red berry so effective in keeping your kidneys functioning in optimal condition? Well, it’s all down to their ability to prevent harmful bacteria from getting stuck on the outer lining of your kidneys.

Cranberries also have the power to reduce inflammation and on top of that they contain a wonderful amount of antioxidants.

For the best results, I’d recommend that you take at least 400 mg of cranberry extract a day.

On top of cranberry extract I’d recommend that you start taking vitamin D supplements. Lack of vitamin D in the system is linked directly to having serious kidney problems.

Ensure that you’re getting in at least 2000 IU of vitamin D a day.

You have to appreciate that your kidneys were designed to last for your whole entire life. Making sure that you look after them by implementing the tips that I share in this article will mean that you will enjoy a life with great health and vitality… exactly what you want.

Super Simple Tips To Help Kidney Problems Down The Road – Part 1

By Monica Moran

grandparentchildIf you’re like any other person out there then you’re probably already be doing something to try and improve the condition of your health.

We all on some level try to do things that will result in us avoiding getting diseases such as Diabetes and Alzheimer’s, while at the same time doing those things that will result in our heart health going up and up.

However can you even remember a time when you actually thought about improving the health of your kidneys? If not, maybe it’s time that you started paying them a little more attention.

You can literally say that after your heart, your kidneys are the most important organ in your body. They are responsible for filtering about 200 quarts of blood everyday.

Another extremely important job they have is to filter about 2 quarts of excess water a day… and all the waste that’s left is transported to the bladder where it is stored as urine.

Your kidney’s also produce hormones that regulate the blood chemicals that are floating about in your body.

So naturally you’d want to take the correct steps to make sure that your kidneys remain in their optimal condition for the rest of your life.

Here are some solid tips to help you keep your kidneys in remarkable health.

1. Start Drinking Way More Water Than You Already Do

Make sure that you remain as hydrated as possible because doing so will ensure that the volume and concentration of your blood will remain largely consistent.

watercupDrinking plenty of water will also result in your digestive system running as smooth as possible, and it will also ensure that your body temperature remains stable and finally staying hydrated will mean that all the toxins in your body will be removed as quickly as possible.

To get all of this done, you’re going to want to drink about 64 ounces of water each and every day.

However if you happen to be suffering from kidney problems already or you happen to sweat a lot more than normal then I’d highly recommend that you drink at least half your bodyweight in ounces in water.

So for example this would mean drinking at least 80 ounces of water everyday if you weighed in at about 160 pounds. But make sure that the water you do drink is filtered and pure!

2. Avoid Delaying Going To The Bathroom

As I said earlier your kidneys main job is to filter out all the blood that is in your body.

When your kidneys are done filtering all the blood in your body then all that will remain will be excess water and waste which will be transported to your bladder, ready to be flushed out.

But keep in mind that your bladder can only really hold in about 14 ounces of water, each and everyday.

When you avoid going to the bathroom, when you need to go… it causes your bladder to expand way more than it should do.

So when you finally do go to the bathroom, your bladder doesn’t actually empty out all the way. If you keep doing this again and again then it will result in you getting a urinary tract infection.

Why School Lunches Could Be Adding To The Obesity Epidemic And What You Can Do To Help

Share Button

groupkidsAs your child walks in from school, takes off his backpack and slumps on the couch, obviously exhausted from a full day of school, you may wonder why his energy has vanished. Ask him what he had for lunch in the school cafeteria, and you may find your answer.

From pizza and French fries to fruit dripping with rich corn syrup and canned, processed vegetables, your child’s food choices may be less than desirable to a health-conscious parent. It’s no wonder your child’s energy is gone and his clothes keep getting tighter.

Many parents are finding that school lunches could be adding to the childhood obesity epidemic. Luckily, there is something you can do to help.

What’s For Lunch?

“The problem with many school lunches, or meals rather, is that they are highly processed,” says Elizabeth Prebish, registered dietitian for Organic Life, provider of healthy lunches in Chicago, Illinois. “Many school lunches include processed meats, fried foods and high amounts of sugars or carbohydrates.”

With restricted budgets to feed large quantities of mouths, typical food service companies use conventional meats that contain hormones, antibiotics and steroids – all things small children do not need, says Prebish.

In addition to lunch, it’s possible your child is filling up on sweets as well. The school lunch system provides many opportunities for sweets, including offering ice cream and bakery items, not to mention chocolate milk. “Having these items as daily options is definitely a contribution to the obesity epidemic,” says Prebish. “These processed sugars are addictive, leaving children craving the same foods not only in school but when they are home as well.”

Snack Time

kidseatinghealthyFrom Halloween and fall festivals to school picnics and class parties, a celebration with food is a common occurrence in the classroom. Beyond the gorging of party cookies and cakes, some nutrition experts believe that even healthier snacks scheduled into the daily classroom schedule can contribute to childhood obesity.

“The number one way in which schools contribute to childhood obesity is by scripting snacks into the daily schedule,” says Adrienne Hew, nutrition specialist and founder of “Children who are well fed do not need snacks – having snacks scripted into the schedule drives them to want to eat even when they are not hungry.”

The idea of incorporating snacks into the school day derived from a practice used for diabetics that uses small meals throughout the day to help keep blood sugar steady, says Hew. “However, the snacks that are offered to children would kill a diabetic – crackers, cookies, Cheerios and juice,” she says.

Cooking Up Change

In order to prompt change, parents need to offer solutions and suggestions to school districts and school board members. Offering a viable solution that is realistic with decreased school budgets is key.

“I would love to see schools engage with the community by going to local farmers or food co-ops and cutting cheap or free deals to absorb their leftover produce or produce that isn’t perfect for selling at the stand but can still be salvaged for making soups, stews and salads,” says Hew.

Another inexpensive option would be to recruit culinary students to complete internships in the schools as apprenticing or head chefs under the supervision of the person who normally is in charge of budgeting, suggests Hew. This economically-appealing option would give interns the opportunity to practice their skills, prepare healthy, innovative meals for school lunches and afford the district with a cost-effective option.

Parents can also advocate for a food service system that offers more natural products, says Prebish. “If this is not an option, work with your food service provider to determine more healthful substitutions that the children will also enjoy,” she says. “Try for more natural, and even organic, products wherever possible.”

In addition to working with food service systems, make yourself known at school board meetings. Parents can work to improve lunch selections by speaking to the board, the community and fellow parents. At each meeting try to provide a suggestion for healthier options, such as replacing meat-based burgers with veggie burgers.

According to Dr. Timothy Radak, faculty member in the Public Health program at Walden University, veggie burgers typically have one-third the amount of fat, no cholesterol and are similar in regards to the amount of protein as meat-based burgers.

Suggest cost-saving, evidence-based ideas to show the benefits to the district’s bottom line and the overall health of each student on campus. Schools could also reduce or eliminate some foods with health risks, such as red meat, processed foods or sugary drinks, says Radak. “Use the cost savings to provide more fresh fruits, vegetables and low fat, nutritious meal options.”

More importantly, educate your child about food, healthy eating habits and smart options for lunch. It is possible that when given the option, he may toss out the pizza and French fries for the veggie burger.

Dr. Kevin Sadati Can Now Help Sleep Apnea Patients With The Septoplasty Turbinate Reduction Surgery

Share Button

snoringSleep apnea patients suffer from a variety of different symptoms, including difficulty breathing and trouble sleeping through the night. Dr. Kevin Sadati now offers the septoplasty turbinate reduction surgery as a solution to his patients who suffer from this disorder.

Many people associate sleep apnea with loud snoring, but the fact of the matter is Orange County patients with sleep apnea actually stop breathing when they enter deep sleep. This causes many different issues for the person who suffers from this disorder, including disrupted sleep and difficulty getting the fulfilling rest that they need. While the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy, or CPAP, has commonly been used to treat sleep apnea, ENT surgeon Dr. Kevin Sadati has found that the septoplasty procedure can be an even better solution.

The septoplasty surgery is actually designed to correct a deviated septum in the nose. However, this same surgery also reduces the size of the nasal turbinate. Turbinate surgery can actually improve the symptoms associated with sleep apnea and may eliminate the need for CPAP therapy all together.

“Many patients in my Newport Beach practice have benefited from this unique procedure. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a difficult disorder to live with every day, so I am always pleased to find a solution that allows patients to live a happy life filled with long, restful nights of sleep,” explained Dr. Kevin Sadati.

An enlarged nasal turbinate can often contribute to Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and in addition, a deviated septum can make the situation worse for the patient. The septoplasty surgery will reduce the size of the enlarged nasal turbinate, which allows for improved air flow through the nasal structure. Ultimately, the patient will be able to breathe better throughout the night and can enter deep sleep after the procedure is complete.

Some patients may find that they still require the use of a breathing machine after the surgery, but it’s important to realize that a traditional CPAP machine cannot be used immediately following the operation. The traditional CPAP will put too much pressure on the sensitive nasal structure, which needs to be allowed time to heal. Full face masks or oral breathing machines can be used as a supplement. It should be noted, however, that some patients do not need to use a breathing machine after this operation is complete because the work done during the surgery corrects the issue.

“Ultimately, most patients find that the septoplasty combined with turbinate surgery will allow them to breathe better and sleep longer through the night. I love when my patients come back to me, finally feeling rested after years of long, sleepless nights,” exclaimed Dr. Kevin Sadati.

Dr. Kevin Sadati is not only an ENT surgeon, but also a facial plastic surgeon who specializes in the rhinoplasty procedure. Patients who are interested in their cosmetic improvement options can discuss the possibility of having a septorhinoplasty procedure performed at their consultation appointment.

Dr. Kevin Sadati has been practicing in Newport Beach for the last 10 years and has performed thousands of surgical procedures on patients. He is well-known for his natural-looking cosmetic surgery results, and his breakthrough medical research. Simple And Easy Tips To Help You Remain Positive Even With Kidney Disease – Part 1

doctorSo you’re sitting there in front of your doctor, dripping with sweat because you’ve just been told that you are indeed suffering from kidney disease. You’re worried, scared… not knowing whether or not your life is ever going to be the same again!

You begin talking with all kinds of so called kidney specialists out there but no matter what advice they give, you feel completely hopeless. You’re just praying deep down that this has all been one massive mistake and that you will wake up from this nightmare at any moment.

Most people that get told they have been diagnosed with some sort of illness will go on to experience a lot of different cycles. These include starting out with denial, then getting angry, then experiencing bouts of depression and then finally moving onto actually accepting the fact that they have an illness.

But you need to act different. You need to go from denial straight to having a positive outlook on your future. The reason being is that not only is this a lot easier both mentally and physically but having a positive mindset will help you get into good health a lot faster.

There are a great number of research studies out there such as the work done by Dr Candace Pert which proves just how powerful the mind actually is and how it effects the body in a deep physiological way.

This is precisely why you must make sure that you remain positive from now on. Because doing so will help you make all the right choices and get you into incredible health in no time at all.

You also want to make sure that you aren’t one of those people that goes from being really happy to becoming really sad. This attitude will totally drain you out. But the good news is that if you implement the tips I share below then staying in a positive mindset is super easy!

1. Avoid Labeling Yourself In a Negative Manner!

The worst thing you can do when you’re trying to overcome kidney disease and move toward better health is label yourself in some sort of negative way. Don’t be that person who feels like a total failure every time something goes wrong.

Things go wrong all the time, but that doesn’t mean you are a failure. Accept the fact that things in life (such as you getting kidney disease) will go wrong from time to time but this doesn’t mean you can’t move forward and live a better and healthier life than you’ve ever experienced before. So avoid placing limiting beliefs on yourself and just move forward.

2. The Problems in Your Life Are Your Greatest Treasures

womantwistingThe reality is that if you study the most successful people in this planet you will realize that they experienced some of the biggest hardships ever. But instead of giving up on themselves they just got back up, brushed themselves off and then just moved forward… eventually going on to experience some of their great successes!

There is no reason why you can’t do the same. Instead of being held back by the reality that you have kidney disease you ought to use it as a platform to move forward and become healthier than ever before. Some of you might even have the ability to experience massive success that you will be openly recognized for.

But while not every single one of you is going to go on to experience fame, it doesn’t mean you can’t go onto experience positive change. Some of you might start to appreciate your personal relationships a lot more, while others of you will go onto really appreciate and value your own life more. Whatever you do start to value more know that there’s hidden treasure under the illness that you’re currently experiencing.

Smart And Effective Steps To Help You Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism – Part 2

By Avelina Kongoi

Continued from part 1 of this article…..

broccoli2. Start To Eat More Healthy, and Nutritious Meals That Are Rich in Vegetables and Protein

After getting yourself checked out by your local doctor the next most important thing you are ever going to do is make sure that you begin to eat really healthy meals. This means that every meal you make should contain a good portion of vegetables and also a good portion of protein.

You might be surprised to hear that protein is the most satisfying of all the macronutrients out there… even more than fats and carbohydrates. But the other benefit of protein is that it will help to maintain that muscle mass which is very important to keeping that metabolism revved up!

But as with anything out there, not all protein sources have been created equal. The best out there is Whey protein and the one that I’d recommend simply because it contains a lot more branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) which are very, very good for your muscles. On top of that this protein is a lot more satisfying to your hunger than the others that are out there.

3. Begin To Eat Foods High in Fiber and Avoid Foods Filled With Sugar

If you’re absolutely serious about losing that excess weight then you’ll want to do whatever you can to avoid eating sugary foods because they will completely destroy your chance of losing weight! On top of that they are just bad for your overall health, which is never good!

Instead of consuming junk foods you should instead focus your time and effort on eating foods that are high in fiber. The reason for this is because not only are they far more satisfying but they will also help to prevent any sort of constipation to come about as a result of your hypothyroidism.

4. Exercise As Often As Possible

joggersEven if you’re the busiest person in the world you don’t have any excuse because you can still dedicate 10 minutes a day to doing some form of exercise. You literally only need 10 minutes a day, every single day to help boost up your metabolism. Do so consistently and you will begin to shed those excess pounds in no time at all.

Not only are you going to start to see the benefit of shedding weight from completing your fitness routine but you will also notice that your muscle mass will begin to increase slowly but surely. And as a lot of you already know the more muscle mass you have on your person the higher your base metabolic rate will be.

And of course the higher your metabolism is the more calories you are going to be burning over time. On top of that you are going to start to look really amazing too, so much so that you will begin to notice that people will start to compliment you on how great you look.

So you see, while it may be a little harder for you to lose weight when you have hypothyroidism… it isn’t at all impossible and if you just stick with the process and put in the hard work every single day!
