Five Essential Tips For Healthy Long-Haul Flights

By Sarah Smith

healthywordsWith over 37.4 million flights scheduled each year, it comes as no surprise that travelers are interested in finding ways to stay healthy during their flights. Maintaining one’s health while air-bound is even more important during longer flights due to the extended exposure to low air pressure, cramped seating, and jet lag. These health concerns may be somewhat alarming, but with so many flights taking off each day, experts have compiled several tips to help your extended flight experience be as healthy and comfortable as possible.

Keep Your Body Moving and Hydrated

Long periods of flying go hand in hand with prolonged periods of stillness. Unfortunately, staying in the same position for too long can bring on some major health concerns. Muscles need frequent contraction in order for your blood to flow properly. Sitting in the same position for a lengthy period without contracting your muscles can lead to blood clots, or a condition called deep vein thrombosis. In order to avoid deep vein thrombosis and clotting read this, it is important to stay active during your flight. This can be done by simply contracting your calf muscles, or tapping your foot while sitting in your seat. Dehydration also increases the risk for blood clots and deep vein thrombosis, so be sure to drink plenty of fluids before and during your flight.

Ensure That You Are Well Rested

Many travelers are under the assumption that they can catch up on any missed sleep during their long trips. It is entirely possible that you may find yourself able to sleep the entire time, but it is also quite common for people to become too stimulated to sleep once they board. It is best to embark on your flight well-rested just in case you are unable to sleep during your travels. You may already be facing jet lag when crossing timezones, so you want to make sure that when you disembark from your flight that you are not at all sleep-deprived.

Create a Plan to Handle Anxiety

Aviophobia, (the fear of flying), is the third most common phobia. In fact, over 20 million Americans report that flying makes them nervous. Airlines have excelled greatly in the past years and are generally a very safe method of transportation, but you want to have a plan in place to tackle any anxiety in case it decides to hit. Some airlines offer practice courses that help people become prepared for major flights so that they know what to expect once it’s time to officially board. It is also important to have a support system that you can reach out to during your flight in case you start to feel anxious. Some even find comfort in talking to the cabin crew beforehand.

Be Aware of How to Handle Low Air Pressure

Planes typically travel up to 35,000 feet in the air where the air is much less habitable for human beings. The low air pressure has a tendency to decrease oxygen levels, which makes cardiac and respiratory patients even more vulnerable. In order to preserve healthy oxygen levels, try to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages during your flight. It is also wise to consult with your primary care physician in order to acquire any equipment or other accommodations that you may need to ensure safe travels.

Save Your Ears from Popping

The low air pressure associated with long flights can also cause your ears to pop from contracting Eustachian tubes. To avoid this painful experience, be sure to carry chewing gum or hard candies with you on board. Taking a prescribed decongestant has also been proven to help alleviate ear-popping symptoms, especially when the user has a cold.

Extended flights may come with some increased health risks, but the end destination is always worth it. Being able to properly prepare for any potential health concerns will give you the ability to have a much more relaxing travel experience. Whether you decide to nap, eat, or watch an interesting film during your travels, you will be able to do so at ease knowing that you are in for a safe and healthy trip.

Five Simple Tips On How To Live A Happier Life Today

An interesting article supplied by PRWeb written by Dr. Sanjay Jain with tips on leading a healthier life. What are your thoughts on this article, please share in the comments section below…..

womantwistingMany people dwell on the negative aspects of life, but that isn’t beneficial. New York Times and USA Today Best Selling author, Sanjay Jain, M.D. MBA provides some tips from his new book on five simple ways to increase happiness today.

Forbes recently reported that as many as 52 percent of Americans are unhappy with their jobs and as a result, their relationships, health and finances suffer. While it may take a change of jobs to be happy in the workplace, there are many things that anyone can do to make their life happier. New York Times and USA Today Best Selling author, Sanjay Jain, M.D. MBA provides tips from his new book on five simple ways to increase happiness today.

1. Soak in some sun. A daily dose of sunshine, about 15 minutes around midday significantly boosts vitamin D levels which in turn increase serotonin production. Mood neurotransmitter not only helps helps you feel better, it boosts immunity and protects against some forms of cancer.

2. Stay home more. For people with families or a partner, staying home more and investing in relationships with loved ones is a surefire way to feel happier. Spend evenings and weekends reading books out loud, flipping through old photo albums, making a fancy dinner or gardening. These activities stimulate conversation and bring everyone together, something that is lacking in many relationships now that most people have a mobile device which rarely leaves their side. When choosing to spend time with friends, spend more time with the optimistic, positive, glass-is-half-full ones than the woe-is-me pessimistic types who infuse every conversation with mood-bashing negativity.

3. Keep a gratitude journal. This may seem like a fad since many people these days are trying to be more mindful and practice gratitude, but there’s really something to it according to researchers at Mayo Clinic. Write down one good thing every day and read through past entries right before bedtime. Develop the habit of looking for good in every situation: the line at the coffee shop might lead to some new professional connections, and having to make four dozen cookies for the school bake sale allows time to make memories with the kids.

happyteens4. Lend a helping hand. Schools teach kids to practice random acts of kindness, so why shouldn’t adults. Adults should try doing an act of kindness every day for a month in order to increase happiness. Participants in a study at the University of Illinois noticed that they had an increased level of happiness by day 10. Try tipping double the going rate; taking coffee to a friend; giving construction workers ice-cold bottles of water; raking leaves for the neighbor; sending a card and encouraging note to a new mom.

5. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet. Most people’s diets could stand at least a minor overhaul to boost health and healing. Eat your way to happiness by following an anti-inflammatory diet that’s rich in vegetables, fruits, cold-water fish, olive oil and healthy whole grains. Most foods that are whole and unprocessed, meaning they’re the closest to their most natural form as possible, are excellent at reducing and controlling inflammation, which is responsible for so many of the illnesses and diseases that people suffer from the standard American diet. By attaining better health, people are much more energetic and happier.

On their own, each of these tips can make a powerful impact on one’s levels of happiness. Start off by implementing one tip this week, and another each week thereafter to experience more happiness.

Five Personal Hygiene Habits Your Kid Must Have

Share Button

By Terrie Dawson

washhandsHygiene facilitates good health and prosperity. Every generation passes on some habits to the next generation to promote hygiene. It also increases social acceptance as unhygienic people are regarded as unhealthy for the society. Often parents start off with the education early on with their kids which in itself is a good practice. Though there is a long list of habits that must be inculcated but here we will talk about 5 most vital personal hygiene habits that your kids must have.

Take a look:

Hand wash

The careless attitude is the cause behind majority of infections (gastro and colds). Kids lay their hands on a lot of contaminated places and eat with the same hands without washing them. The first and the foremost hygiene habit that every kid must practice is to wash hands before eating and after coming from outside. It is also important that they follow the right technique. They should use an antibacterial soap or a hand wash, lather and then rinse for about 15 seconds starting from wrists to the nails. This drains off the potential germs.

Bathing

Bathing should be followed like an everyday ritual. Bathing not only checks bad body odor but it also protects them from many diseases. There should be regular bath time. Many kids can shower on their own from the age of five. Parents can supervise so that they clean themselves well. The teenage is the most vulnerable age. With the anatomical changes happening to the life getting active, the teen’s body goes through a lot. Infections thus become commonplace. Athletic teens may encounter some fungal or bacterial infections, it is important that they control the spread by using best anti-bacterial or anti-fungal body soap. Regular hair-wash is also essential to check any dirt and germ build-up.

Brushing teeth

brushteethBrushing facilitates a fresh breath, checks gum diseases and is good for your pocket as well, I mean no dentist required. Sometimes it’s difficult to make kids brush their teeth. Parents must tell them how bad breath can make their friends shoo off. This will motivate them. Flossing for a minimum of three minutes and swishing with clean water will furnish a healthy smile. Brushing at night will check the bacterial growth by night which may be caused due to the food particles remaining in the mouth, if kept unclean.

Cover sneeze and cough

Sneezing and coughing in an appropriate manner is a good practice as doing the same at somebody’s face may annoy him. Therefore, it is important that the kids learn to block the passage with the elbow if there is no tissue available. It would be even better if they wash their hands using an antibiotic soap.

Hygiene of the genital parts

Both the girls and boys must keep their genital parts clean. This becomes even more important when the hormonal changes kick off during the puberty stage. Even before they enter this stage, they must know the importance of changing their inner garments regularly and keeping the parts clean and dry. Keeping them wet for long can cause fungal infections. Though using anti-fungal body soap may help, but prevention is better than cure. Hence personal hygiene habits are recommended.

Remember, kids learn from their elders. Therefore lead by example. Parents must practice these personal hygiene habits by themselves so that the kids learn and follow them.

By Kat Myers

scrubs1) You Get to Help People —

One of the best parts about pursuing a career in medicine is that it provides you with opportunities to help other people. Medical assistants interact with patients on a daily basis. They develop personal relationships with the people they help. For many people, this is the most rewarding part of the job.

2) Financial Stability —

The current economic recession has put many people in a position of financial instability. Medical assistant school is a fantastic option for anyone worried about the future of the economy. The demand for medical assistants isn’t going to decrease anytime soon—after all, there will always be hospitals to work at and people who need help.

3) Certification is Quick —

Certification to become a medical assistant only takes 2 years. This makes medical assistant school a perfect option for people who want a career in medicine, but aren’t interested in attending a 4-year university. Medical assistant school is also a great option for people who have to juggle school with other commitments, like work or family. If you want to continue your education, but you’re worried that you only have a limited window of time in which to do it, becoming a certified medical assistant could be the perfect solution to your dilemma.

4) You Make Good Money —

Money is obviously going to be a pretty significant factor when it comes to choosing a career. Luckily, medical assistants make good money. According to the American Association of Medical Assistants, the average salary for a medical assistant is just under $30,000 a year. Some medical assistants even make as much as $45,000 a year.

5) You Have a Variety of Responsibilities —

Medical assistants are required to do a number of different jobs and tasks. The duties you’re expected to preform will be contingent on where decide to work. If you work in a hospital, your responsibilities could include everything from taking vital signs to filing insurance claims. If you decide to work in a smaller clinic, you could end up doing anything checking your patients in to office administration. This makes being a medical assistant a perfect option for people who don’t like preforming the same task over and over again.

Guest Post – Barbara Woodberry, Top Five Exercises For A Healthy Heart

Share Button

womantwistingEveryone knows the importance of burning calories when it comes to dieting but did you know that regular exercise is also important for your heart? Studies have shown that those who partake in regular exercise have a lower risk of heart disease, autoimmune diseases, obesity, diabetes, and even muscular dystrophy.

While the following exercises are known for their association with weight loss, they can also be good for improving your hearts health. They can therefore allow you to live a longer, and hopefully healthier, life.

Lap Swimming

Simply swimming laps is an exercise that can be both fun and good for your heart. By swimming laps in a standard-size swimming pool for roughly 30 minutes 4-5 times per week, you can lower your risk of heart disease by 30-40%.

This is because swimming works all of your muscles at the same time, including the muscles found in both your heart and lungs. Swimming is one of the most productive forms of exercise and requires your entire body to work in unison.

familybikeridetogetherBiking

While swimming is usually viewed as the best exercise for heart health, biking comes in at a close second. Biking, at any speed, increases your lung capacity, improves your heart health, and can also allow you to build some serious leg muscle.

Studies have shown that just 20-30 minutes of biking each day, even if it’s just around the block, will significantly improve your health.

Uphill Walking

While everyone knows that walking is good for them, it’s the uphill version that’s ideal for your health. Uphill walking puts significantly more strain on your leg muscles, lungs, and heart. It forces you to take deep, shallow breaths and it makes your heart beat roughly 50% faster than usual.

Like biking, those who partake in uphill walking for 20-30 minutes each day will reap the serious benefits of having both a stronger heart and a significantly lower risk of heart disease.

Interval Training

Interval training stresses multiple parts of your body within a short period of time. By changing between different exercises and putting your body under different types of stress, your muscles and organs learn to quickly adapt.

Interval training is good for both your heart and your lungs because it requires your body to control its heart beat and breathing in order to more efficiently supply your muscles with oxygen.

Additionally, by switching between different types of exercise before any individual muscle group is worn out, most people find that they end up being able to work out for longer.

Yoga

Finally, although yoga is popular for its ability to make you more flexible, it also happens to be great for your heart. Yoga trains your body to become more patient and to use its resources as efficiently as possible.

Instead of consuming large amounts of oxygen and sporadically sending it all over your body, yoga teaches your heart to provide more oxygen to the specific muscles you are using at any given moment.

There’s also the small matter of yogas effect on stress levels. Those who practice yoga on a regular basis tend to find themselves significantly less tense. And as most people are aware, lowering your stress levels can also have serious health benefits.
