Tips When Talking To Your Doctor About Your Child’s Health

By Ala Alkhatib

doctorFor a parent, there is nothing more important than your child’s health. You will go to any extreme to ensure that your child remains happy and healthy. Considering your busy lifestyle, it may not be possible to schedule a regular appointment with your child’s doctor. Sometimes, it is very difficult to get an appointment quickly as most pediatricians will be overbooked or overscheduled. Thus, you need to take advantage of the minimum amount of time that you spend with the doctor.

When it comes to child’s healthcare, it is always advisable to take the child to the same doctor again and again rather than switching doctors. This way you are able to build a strong bond between the doctor, the child, as well as the parent – – which make both the doctor’s and parent’s task easier.

Here are several things you need to keep in mind while talking to your child’s doctor about his/her health

Be well prepared: Before seeing the doctor, make a list of the things you should discuss with him / her. This includes the child’s general health, the specific condition, when symptoms first appeared, and the frequency of occurrence. For example, If the child is throwing up a lot, you should keep note of when the vomiting started, what triggered this response, at what interval it occurred, and what home remedy you tried. Also, make a note of all the questions you want to ask the doctor.

Prioritize things: When it comes to your children’s health, you will always have a lot of worries. In addition to writing notes down, you should also prioritize them in order of importance.  For example, if you are consulting the doctor for your child’s ear infection, that should be your first priority.

Provide all information: Report to the doctor if there are any other health concerns that should be aware of….do not leave anything out. If there is an X-ray or medical report, remember to carry that as well. If the child is on any new medications or if he / she is allergic to anything, remember to mention this to the doctor. This includes even the multivitamin and painkiller which the child may have had. It is also useful if you can provide a complete report of the child’s health including the blood group, history of allergies (food, drug, and others) and immunization schedule.

Be informed: The internet provides a whole lot of information about each and every aspect of health. While it is a good idea to get some information from the internet, do not go overboard. Familiarize yourself with few medical terms related to your child’s illness. If the doctor mentions any of these names, it will be easy for you to understand.

groupkidsRemain focused: Pay complete attention to what the doctor is telling. Turn off the cell phone to make sure that you are not distracted. Also, do not discuss things that are totally unrelated to the current health condition like the behavioral problem of the child.

Do not hesitate: A mother is a child’s best doctor. A doctor spends just ten or fifteen minutes examining a child. But it is the mother who knows the child well. If you feel that there is something amiss and your child needs a hospitalization, do not hesitate to tell the doctor. Pointing out certain facts that the doctor missed out will help him to make a proper diagnosis.

Use the latest technology to communicate: When it comes to communicating with today’s doctors, the latest technology like WhatsApp and Email comes handy. Ask your doctor whether he is comfortable communicating through these means and if so remember to get the doctor’s phone number and email id. If you have missed out on any important report, the same can be sent via email or WhatsApp.

Communicate with the nurse: Before seeing a child’s doctor, you will often meet the doctor’s assistant or nurse who will check the height and weight of the child. It would be a good idea to share the child’s health condition with them. They might be able to provide some tip which the doctor would most likely forget in his busy schedule.

Above all, make sure that you meet the doctor at the right time. If by any chance you are not able to reach the clinic on time, let the clinic staff knows beforehand. Also, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the appointment procedure of the clinic as well as insurance formalities to avoid unnecessary delays.

Your Child’s Friendships: How To Be Encouraging Without Hovering

By Mary Jo Rapini, MEd, LPC

groupkidswbgSchool has already begun for some children, while for others school won’t start for a few more weeks. Perhaps over the summer, your child got together with their friends on Facebook instead of face-to-face. Your child may have 1000 Facebook friends, but no real friends.

But with the new school year, your child will need some friends to talk to, spend time with, share sleepovers and growing-up drama.

You may feel at a loss as to helping your child. You don’t want to be that helicopter over-protective parent, yet you doubt your child’s ability to make face-to-face friends. The more they engage on Facebook or other social media outlets, the more awkward they become with face-to-face friends. It isn’t healthy for your child to have only virtual friends. They don’t live in a virtual world. They have to go to a real school, get a real job and interact with real people. Your child is at a disadvantage if they don’t know how to interact and make friendships.

How can you help and support your kids to find friends without hovering or getting in their way of making friends on their own?

Here are suggestions for parents who don’t want to hinder or hover, but do want their child to have lasting friendships.

1. Have reasonable expectations about your child’s social skills. As school begins, encourage them to invite one or two kids over for pizza.

2. Make it a point to meet the parents of your child’s friends.

3. Encourage friendships over popularity. Discouraging kids from manipulative friends is one thing, but insisting they only make friends with the popular kids sends the wrong message.

4. Best friends share interests. If your child has a friend who shares their interests, suggest an outing they could invite a friend to attend.

5. Only get involved in a friendship dilemma if your child asks for help.

6. Separate your friendship needs from your child’s, and don’t assume they feel as you would.

7. If your child is a loner and seems depressed, don’t hesitate to get professional guidance. Loners are more likely to get bullied and feel misunderstood. Their self-esteem is fragile and that is one of the reasons kids need friends. They build each other up and help each other feel good about themselves.

kidsjumpingFriendships are important for kids because they help the child feel supported and good about themselves. Social media is a wonderful way to connect with long-distance friends, but virtual friends cannot replace the face-to-face communication friends share. Activities kids do with their friends is important in establishing a strong foundation of what healthy relationships look and feel like. Your self-esteem, confidence and attitude toward adult friends are established in childhood. Parents should encourage their children’s friendships without directing them.

By Jennifer Clark

malewashingfaceGood skincare doesn’t only have to do with great products on the market. Eating right makes a big difference as well. This is important not only for adults, but also for our children. You can purchase specified products based upon skin type. Products like the Best BB Cream for Oily skin are very effective for improving the feel and appearance of the skin. Healthy food choices play an important role in the overall status of your skin.

Parents always want to teach their children to develop habits that are healthy. The things that we eat affect how our bodies perform. At the same time, food can have an effect on your skin and how it looks. Having skin that is healthy and glowing is an indicator of good health and nutritional choices. Fruits and vegetables are terrific selections in this process. Healthy meat selections will positively affect your skin’s appearance.

Children of different ages often have to develop a taste for healthy food choices. Starting early with introducing these foods is best. It will result in better life choices where the diet is concerned. This is also a good way to keep healthy skin for a lifetime. Let’s take a look at some foods that can have a great impact on your child’s skin.

Fish and Seafood

There are many health benefits of eating fish and other seafood items. Omega-3 fatty acids are often associated with eliminating skin issues such as acne. Salmon and sardines are two great choices in this category that can help your child’s skin. Diets lacking the fatty acids found in fish and seafood have been connected to inflammation issues.

This can result blocked pores and an overproduction of oil. Children with particularly oily skin can benefit from a rounded diet that includes fish and seafood. There are various ways to cook these foods and still enjoy their benefits. Baking and broiling are top ways to prepare this food choice. Experimenting with seasonings and sauces can be very helpful.

Walnuts

If your child’s skin is dry, walnuts can be a good food choice. These nuts will give the skin and the diet a healthy boost. Walnuts tend to add moisture to the diet and are great as snacks of accents to various dishes. This nut is a good source of one particular Omega-3 fatty acid. They include ALA or alpha-linolenic acid that lubricates the skin.

Many people who suffer from eczema have a deficiency in ALA. Fresh walnuts can be added to vegetable salads, as well as, those that include meat. Roasting these nuts before using them as ingredients is a good idea. Children may prefer these as snacks alone or with other food choices.

Eggs

eggsEggs are one of the world’s best breakfast choices. They can be used for other meals as well. Brunch and dinner dishes with eggs are delicious. Another reason to enjoy eggs is because of their benefits to the skin. Because eggs are high in lutein and zeaxanthin, they are associated with strengthening skin cells. Fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed because of the composition of eggs.

Lutein, in particular, is a benefit to your child’s skin. It works to build the connective tissue that presents a healthy appearance. The skin keeps its shape and appeal because of lutein, which is also good for eye health. Eggs can be prepared in a variety of ways. Hot dishes like scrambled eggs or casseroles are tasty choices. Cold selections like deviled-eggs are fun dishes to prepare for children.

Water

Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily has long been promoted. There is a list of reasons behind this goal. Water is a natural detox beverage that works to rid the body of toxins that affect the body and skin alike. Encouraging your children to drink enough water is a great way to promote skin health. Dehydration can occur if the body doesn’t get the right amount of water.

The skin is one area where this condition can be seen. Dark circles around the eyes can develop as a result of dehydration. Dry skin is another result of this water deficiency. Pure and filtered water is the best choice for daily consumption. Switching from sweet drinks to water is a wonderful way to treat the skin. At the same time, you can prevent dehydration and its symptoms.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are not vegetables only to be enjoyed in the fall. These great veggies can be used throughout the year as a source of beta-carotene. The body converts beta-carotene into Vitamin A, which is healthy for your child’s skin. This vitamin is responsible for the smooth and glowing appearance of the skin. The skin’s texture also benefits from the composition of sweet potatoes.

Eating this vegetable can result in softer feeling skin overall. Children may prefer sweet potatoes in a number of ways. Raw treats with dips are one way to use these potatoes. Baking them similar to white potatoes is another idea. Roasting sweet potatoes with other veggies can be a great way to accent a meat entree.

You can purchase specific products like the Best BB Cream for Oily skin as a part of your regime. Eating healthy food selections is a good way to ensure the health of the skin. Children products are available to treat individual conditions. It is possible to avoid skin issues by encouraging healthier food choices for children. These are habits that will result in beautiful glowing skin.

Family Is A Child’s Life Center

By Mary Jo Rapini, MEd, LPC

familysoccerWhile on a recent trip to Greece, my husband and I made a two-night layover in Rafina (the second busiest seaport town in the Athens area). The first night we spent there was Saturday, and our hotel was conveniently located about 4 blocks from the town center (square). After arriving in town at 10:30 p.m. we then decided to walk to the square and enjoy a late dinner.

Much to our surprise, the town square was alive with children, families playing and parents visiting friends while enjoying the cafes. The children were playing tag, kicking a soccer ball, and talking “best-friend” girl talk. Interestingly, both genders played together without an apparent agenda.

While it delighted both my husband and me, at the same time it brought back nostalgic memories of our childhoods. They were so different from the childhoods most of our children experience today.

The Rafina families were united by food, laughter, and friendship. The children were secure and ran back and forth between their friends and their parents. The parents knew the children who were playing with their kids and talked with them with as much ease as they spoke with their own children.

In the United States, we rarely see this behavior. Our children play inside on computer games, shoot “selfies” of what they want to be perceived as, and text people who aren’t with them. Our children have suffered a great loss when compared to the children in Rafina.

familyMost parents today try too hard to be their kids’ friends, and thus have sacrificed their duty of being parents. Today’s parents too often have lost the ability to say no, and rarely choose to spend family evenings socializing as a family group and/or with other families. Parents in the U.S. confuse giving their children stuff as being more important than giving them time. Work exhausts their time, and they choose not to interrupt the cycle for a night socializing with others face to face without texting or emailing. Americans have become vigilant about not missing something important at work, the office, or world happenings, but they are less vigilant about missing a strong family connection.

The community of Rafina has something invaluable to teach every American: “family” IS the center of life. If you lose your family, you lose a huge root system for all of your life.

I grew up like the Greek children I saw that night; most of the time my face had the same happy expression these kids had. My siblings and I, and our friends, knew we were loved. We were not hurried to grow up; we had security; and our family was at the core.

When was the last time you saw children playing freely with one another outside? How old were they? Do you hear sighs of boredom and frustration when your child is forced to spend time with the family and not use electronics? This should be a red flag that maybe we have been prioritizing stuff instead of giving our children some undivided time.

Use Your Bag Of Tricks For Your Child’s First Trip To The Dentist’s Office

By Aaron Schulman

brushteethEvery parent needs to have a good bag of tricks so use when stressful events are in the plans. Since so many people have anxiety about going to the dentist and many children learn about the anxiety from their friends and from television. These are a few easy tricks to throw into your figurative bag:

1. Honesty is the Best Policy: Parents should not trick their children by telling them they are going somewhere else and then showing up at the dentist. Children need to trust their parents, so when you are taking them to the dentist, tell them. If you do not tell your child about the dentist, your child could develop more anxiety and fear about maintaining their teeth.

2. Bribery Does Work: Parents use bribery all of the time and there is nothing wrong with using it regarding the dentist. The bribery should not be contingent on whether or not your child’s behavior is good. If your child knows that he will be getting an ice cream cone or a special toy at the end of the appointment, it gives you something to use to remind him that a good thing will come at the end of the appointment.

3. Story Time: Everyone feels better about their experiences if they know that someone else has had a similar experience. So, your child will be more relaxed if she hears about your first experience at the dentist. It does not really matter if the story is completely accurate – especially since you might not really remember the first experience – but keeps it positive so your child knows that the dentist is helpful and kind.

4. Know Your Child’s Schedule: If you plan the appointment when your child should be napping, you will probably have a horrible experience. Make sure that you schedule the appointment during a time that your child is awake and fed. This will help ensure that your sanity will be preserved.

childteeth5. Sing a Song: Kids love to be silly and they love to sing silly songs. The best songs are the ones you make up together and a silly song about the dentist’s office can make the even more enjoyable. You could record the song and put it on a YouTube channel to share with the dentist or record it on your cellphone and play it when you get there.

6. Decorate the Dentist’s Office: Along with singing, kids love to draw. Your child could draw a picture for the dentist before visiting and the hand deliver it to the dentist, receptionist, or hygienist. It can be fun for your child if you secretly call the office in advance so let the office know and then they can hang the picture up for your visit. Your child will feel so important and it will make the office visit go more smoothly.

7. Share a Skill: Kids love to show off their skills. Before you visit the dentist, encourage your child to practice telling a joke or doing some other fun skill to share with the dentist. Your child could bring in her softball glove to talk about the last game or bring in his soccer ball to talk about the latest goal he scored. Your child will feel so important and the dentist will have something to talk about during the appointment.

When it comes to parenting, it is helpful to anticipate a variety of outcomes. When it comes to going to the dentist for the first time, you never know what to expect. A little careful planning goes a long way!
