As a result of making our body do something it wasn’t meant for, we get sore shoulders, achy necks, strained forearms, and the list goes on. According to an article published by the Washington Post, people who watched 7 plus hours of TV in an 8 year period had a 61 percent higher risk of dying. But since so many jobs revolve around sitting at one’s desk. If we are still working toward that goal of having enough money for early retirement, what’s a desk worker to do?

Fortunately, there are products on the market and things we can do to prevent or minimize common desk-related aches and pains.

1. Your wrist and forearms hurt.

Your fingers weren’t made to hit little square bits of plastic over and over. In fact, doing so puts you at risk of repetitive strain injury or carpal tunnel syndrome. But there is a way to combat this pain.

Ergonomic keyboards were created to cause the least amount of stress and tension on your arms and wrists. Generally, ergonomic keyboards feature a gentle slope so that your arms are resting at an angle, versus flat on your desk. The keyboard also features keys that are aligned to your hands’ natural position on the keyboard. Ergonomic keyboards can range from moderately priced models to products upwards of $200.

2. The base of your neck and your shoulders are tense.

Right now, as you read this article, evaluate how you are sitting. What angle is your head at? Is it looking straight ahead to read? Or is your head tilted downward at a slight angle? When your head tilts forward, this places undue stress on the base of the neck and shoulders, causing the muscles here to contract and tighten. If these muscles are not massaged and loosened, then you become susceptible to further pain complications. The solution? Massage where it hurts or feels stiff. And no, you don’t need to book an appointment at the massage parlor. Use your fingers, or even better, buy a handheld massager that you can pull out whenever your shoulders need a rub. You should feel an almost immediate relief from pain.

According to WebMD, it happens to everyone. The lumbar region, that part of your back below your rib cage, is where you feel the pain. It can be caused by lifting something too heavy, but also from sitting too long on a chair that causes you to lean forward, or slouch. Lumbar support cushions can help to minimize your lower back pain. These come in cushions you sit on, or cushions that you put at the small of your back. 4. You feel stiff and creaky.

Being in one position for too long can cause problems. Even if you have correct posture, and you are getting good support for your back, shoulders, and wrists. Maybe you get up and stretch at the top of every hour, yet you still feel creaky? One factor that could be contributing to your stiffness is the need to hydrate and stay hydrated. Your body consists of 50 to 60 percent water. This water is used up throughout the day and needs replenishing. If you begin to feel sluggish and creaky, it could be that you need to chug a glass of water.

You do not need to endure pain at your desk. With just a little research, modification, and adjustment, you could be improving the quality of your work life. Not only that, you could be preventing some other serious ailments down the line. Take control of your pain by doing something about it now.

Many would-be buyers–in all markets, not just bicycle shoppers–are reluctant to buy used, thinking they don’t want someone else’s half-dead recycled machine. But the fact is that bicycles, like many types of exercise equipment, often end up for sale in remarkably good condition, and for reasonable prices. Classified Ads are typically full of such listings, and a little patience can get you quite a bargain. Texas is an above-average market for these goods because our wide-open spaces make it more cost-effective to travel a few miles to pick something up. Compare the 220 miles of US 83 between Abilene and Austin, and you’ll find it a much more pleasant drive than the comparable route from Washington, DC to New York City. Which one would you rather travel to pick up a bulky item like a bicycle?

The quantity of equipment on the market works in your favor, too. Competition is your friend, and in large markets like Texas–where commerce patterns spread over thousands of square miles–there are plenty of people offering the items you want. Competition goes up, price goes down.

Why is there so much of this stuff for sale? There are several reasons for owners to lower the kickstand and hit the market.

They Upgraded

Sometimes a first-time buyer purchases something on the light-duty, low-cost side. It’s a sampling strategy–they don’t want to sink too much cash into it until they know it’s a hobby they want to continue. On the reverse of that coin is the other outcome, the rider who abandons exercise and moves to a different pursuit. Or the couch. Maybe the owner has decided that driving from Sweetwater to Aspen is not a trip they’re willing to make very often, and the skis are for sale. Perhaps we’re too far inland for seafaring recreation. And there are always those who haven’t stuck with a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Any way you slice it, they’re done with the equipment, and it’s there for your taking.

They Duplicated

Some buyers may purchase equipment and begin to utilize it. For example, they get a stationary bike and start burning up the miles. They like the weight loss, muscle tone, and conditioning they get, but realize they aren’t gaining much upper body strength. So rather than further congest their house, they get a gym membership to gain access to the additional machines they need. Soon they’re just using a stationary at the gym and no longer need the one at home, so they’re ready to sell it to defray gym membership costs. Ta-daa! Stationary for sale!

The point is this: Whatever the exercise gear you need, there’s no reason to pay full price for it simply because you fear its history. There are good reasons for a perfectly functional item to be for sale at a reasonable price. Enjoy the savings.

humanbodyThe sphenoid makes up part of the bottom of your skull. The pituitary gland sits on top of the sphenoid bone inside the skull. The pituitary gland is an endocrine gland that secretes important hormones vital to the body’s proper functioning. Hormones secreted from the pituitary gland help control the following body processes: growth, blood pressure, breast milk production, sex organ functions in both male and female, thyroid gland function, conversion of food into energy (metabolism), water regulation and balance with the kidneys, temperature regulation, and pain relief. Some aspects of pregnancy and childbirth including stimulation of uterine contractions during childbirth can also be affected. If the sphenoid bone is not in its proper position many of these hormones won’t be secreted in the proper amount from the pituitary gland.

Sphenoid subluxation or misalignment can cause migraines, headaches, depression, memory problems, brain dysfunction, dyslexia, learning disabilities, bed wetting, nightmares, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, color blindness, psychological disturbances, and moodiness. There can also be problems associated with taste, smell, hearing, vision, speech problems, dry mouth, teeth grinding, dental malocclusion, eye pain, deviation of the eyeball, eyelid weakness, balance issues, problems with tongue and or sucking, asthma, sinusitis, neck and lower back problems and scoliosis.

brainYou are born with 306 bones in your body give or take a few because of anomalies. There are so many bones to choose from that are important to the human body functioning properly, but this bone when misaligned or out of place can affect almost every bone in the body. Unless you are a healthcare practitioner you probably haven’t even heard of it before.

The bone that I am referring to is the Sphenoid bone. The sphenoid bone is one of the cranial bones that make up the skull. It is an unpaired cranial bone located right behind the side of both eyes. Why the sphenoid bone? The sphenoid bone has also been called the keystone bone, because it touches or articulates with every cranial bone in the skull. If the sphenoid bone is misaligned then quite possibly every bone in the skull could be misaligned too. The sphenoid bone comes from the Greek word sphenoeides or wedge-like. The sphenoid bone is one of the seven bones that articulate to form the orbit of the eye. Its shape somewhat resembles that of a butterfly or bat with its wings extended.

Your skull is not a single bone but it is made up of many cranial bones. You have eight larger bones that protect your brain and 14 smaller bones that make up the lower front of your skull.

The Cranial Academy and Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation found that there is life-long mobility of the cranial bones and sutures in healthy human beings. Sutures are the spaces between the cranial bones. Cranial bones can move in small amounts and do possess an inherent rhythmic motion. According to a study by Nelson, Sergueef and Glonek this rhythmic motion or oscillations occur 4 to 6 cycles per minute. Osteopathic physicians report the same oscillation rhythm in cranial bone motion in their studies too. Even NASA research has stated, “Although the skull is often assumed to be a rigid container with a constant volume, many researchers have demonstrated that the skull moves on the order of a few micro millimeters with changes in intracranial pressure.” This movement of your cranial bones and sutures is essential for health.
