The Top 5 Body Ailments While At Your Desk – And How to Fix Them

By Steve Barker

deskOne thing is for sure, the human body was not designed to sit behind a desk all day, staring at a screen. As a result of making our body do something it wasn’t meant for, we get sore shoulders, achy necks, strained forearms, and the list goes on. According to an article published by the Washington Post, people who watched 7 plus hours of TV in an 8 year period had a 61 percent higher risk of dying. But since so many jobs revolve around sitting at one’s desk. If we are still working toward that goal of having enough money for early retirement, what’s a desk worker to do?

Fortunately, there are products on the market and things we can do to prevent or minimize common desk-related aches and pains.

1. Your wrist and forearms hurt.

Your fingers weren’t made to hit little square bits of plastic over and over. In fact, doing so puts you at risk of repetitive strain injury or carpal tunnel syndrome. But there is a way to combat this pain.

Ergonomic keyboards were created to cause the least amount of stress and tension on your arms and wrists. Generally, ergonomic keyboards feature a gentle slope so that your arms are resting at an angle, versus flat on your desk. The keyboard also features keys that are aligned to your hands’ natural position on the keyboard. Ergonomic keyboards can range from moderately priced models to products upwards of $200.

2. The base of your neck and your shoulders are tense.

Right now, as you read this article, evaluate how you are sitting. What angle is your head at? Is it looking straight ahead to read? Or is your head tilted downward at a slight angle? When your head tilts forward, this places undue stress on the base of the neck and shoulders, causing the muscles here to contract and tighten. If these muscles are not massaged and loosened, then you become susceptible to further pain complications. The solution? Massage where it hurts or feels stiff. And no, you don’t need to book an appointment at the massage parlor. Use your fingers, or even better, buy a handheld massager that you can pull out whenever your shoulders need a rub. You should feel an almost immediate relief from pain.

3. Your lower back hurts.

According to WebMD, it happens to everyone. The lumbar region, that part of your back below your rib cage, is where you feel the pain. It can be caused by lifting something too heavy, but also from sitting too long on a chair that causes you to lean forward, or slouch. Lumbar support cushions can help to minimize your lower back pain. These come in cushions you sit on, or cushions that you put at the small of your back. Do a Google search for lumbar support and you’ll find a line up targeted to preventing lower back ailments.

4. You feel stiff and creaky.

Being in one position for too long can cause problems. Even if you have correct posture, and you are getting good support for your back, shoulders, and wrists. Maybe you get up and stretch at the top of every hour, yet you still feel creaky? One factor that could be contributing to your stiffness is the need to hydrate and stay hydrated. Your body consists of 50 to 60 percent water. This water is used up throughout the day and needs replenishing. If you begin to feel sluggish and creaky, it could be that you need to chug a glass of water.

You do not need to endure pain at your desk. With just a little research, modification, and adjustment, you could be improving the quality of your work life. Not only that, you could be preventing some other serious ailments down the line. Take control of your pain by doing something about it now.

Whether you need the best workouts, treatments or diet plans, we’ll give you the best tips on how to get beach body ready for your vacation. If you’re heading to America for your vacation, you’re going to be surrounded by stick-thin women and toned-up men when you’re at the beach, and as well as enrolling on the visa waiver program to enter the country, you’re also going to want a beach body.

Diet

Focusing on your diet is extremely important when it comes to getting a beach body. If you can’t train or you don’t have the motivation to hit the gym, looking at your diet is extremely important. Losing body fat and weight is easy if you’re eating the right food. Eating lots of fish for the good natural oils that are perfect for brain food as well as boosting protein levels, and cutting out the sugar is all important. Sauces such as tomato sauce, soy productions, barbecue sauce, honey mustard and more are a huge culprit when it comes to piling on the calories. Adding healthy fruits and vegetables, and packing on the protein are all important to getting beach body ready.

Mentality

Your mentality is exceptionally important to help you get beach body ready. Picturing the end result and how you want to look is a sure fire way to help you when it comes to trying to get beach body ready. If you have old pictures of yourself if you were a shape that you desire to be now, stick them on the fridge as a reminder of what you can be. saladplateLosing weight isn’t the only way to get beach body ready. You also want to get yourself into a training regime in order to effectively tone up, giving you that ideal beach body. If you are trying to be in the best shape possible, you should do cardio every day. Weights for women are also a good way to train your body weight. All-inclusive buffets and relaxation can put you off, but if you suddenly stop, you may find that the beach-body you built up will slowly disappear, leaving you without that lovely body throughout the rest of your vacation. Maintaining that with healthy eating while you’re away or having an occasional jog on the beach in the morning is the perfect way to maintain your beach body throughout your vacation, so you don’t quickly fall back into bad habits. Keep training, and you’ll get to where you want to be.

Understand Your Body: How To Beat the Bulge With HIIT Cardio

By Joshua Mackow

womanweightsMost people associate cardio training with boring jogs and endless hours on the treadmill. With the right approach, you can make cardio fun! Next time you exercise, try out a HIIT program. High-intensity interval training or HIIT alternates short bursts of intense anaerobic exercise with slower recovery periods. This type of cardio training burns more fat in less than any other workout and in a shorter amount of time.

Is HIIT the Best Way to Burn Fat?

Contrary to the popular belief, steady cardio isn’t the best way to burn fat. HIIT is more effective and yields better results than slow or medium intensity cardio. This type of workout also increases metabolism, causing your body to burn more calories for up to 24 hours after training.

The benefits of HIIT go beyond weight loss. This form of cardio increases muscle strength and endurance, improves insulin sensitivity, and helps build lean muscle. It’s actually one of the few types of cardio with anabolic effects. High intensity interval training is ideal for those who want to stay fit and shed pounds without spending hours in the gym.

Fat Burning HIIT Workouts for a Leaner Body

Most HIIT workouts consist of a quick warm up followed by high intensity intervals and recovery periods. A typical HIIT session can last anywhere from five to 30 minutes. There are no strict rules. The most popular fat burning HIIT workouts are the Tabata regimen, the Timmons regimen, the Gibala regimen, and the Peter Coe regimen. Most fitness trainers have created their own HIIT version, so there are thousands of workouts available.

Whether you want to burn fat or increase your strength and endurance, HIIT is a great choice. This type of workout delivers amazing results in only a few minutes a day. Cardio doesn’t have to be boring! You can even design your own HIIT workout using kettlebells, dumbbells, jump ropes, and cardio machines.

A Healthy Body AND A Healthy Checkbook!

momdaugtherbikeYou’ve found yourself in the market for a good bicycle or two. A trip to the sporting goods store has you nursing a serious case of sticker shock, so you’re thinking of buying used. Many would-be buyers–in all markets, not just bicycle shoppers–are reluctant to buy used, thinking they don’t want someone else’s half-dead recycled machine. But the fact is that bicycles, like many types of exercise equipment, often end up for sale in remarkably good condition, and for reasonable prices. Classified Ads are typically full of such listings, and a little patience can get you quite a bargain. Texas is an above-average market for these goods because our wide-open spaces make it more cost-effective to travel a few miles to pick something up. Compare the 220 miles of US 83 between Abilene and Austin, and you’ll find it a much more pleasant drive than the comparable route from Washington, DC to New York City. Which one would you rather travel to pick up a bulky item like a bicycle?

The quantity of equipment on the market works in your favor, too. Competition is your friend, and in large markets like Texas–where commerce patterns spread over thousands of square miles–there are plenty of people offering the items you want. Competition goes up, price goes down.

Why is there so much of this stuff for sale? There are several reasons for owners to lower the kickstand and hit the market.

They Upgraded

Sometimes a first-time buyer purchases something on the light-duty, low-cost side. It’s a sampling strategy–they don’t want to sink too much cash into it until they know it’s a hobby they want to continue. In time, maybe they learn more about bicycles and realize that a sleek road model isn’t what they need for a ride through Palo Duro Canyon. It could also be the sale of a treadmill that didn’t provide that Palo Duro view. Or maybe their strength level was such that their free weights didn’t properly combine to give them the load they wanted. Whatever the issue, they have something lightly used (read that as “broken in and proven functional”) that they no longer need, and they’re ready to unload it at a reasonable price.

They Downgraded

On the reverse of that coin is the other outcome, the rider who abandons exercise and moves to a different pursuit. Or the couch. Maybe the owner has decided that driving from Sweetwater to Aspen is not a trip they’re willing to make very often, and the skis are for sale. Perhaps we’re too far inland for seafaring recreation. And there are always those who haven’t stuck with a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Any way you slice it, they’re done with the equipment, and it’s there for your taking.

They Duplicated

Some buyers may purchase equipment and begin to utilize it. For example, they get a stationary bike and start burning up the miles. They like the weight loss, muscle tone, and conditioning they get, but realize they aren’t gaining much upper body strength. So rather than further congest their house, they get a gym membership to gain access to the additional machines they need. Soon they’re just using a stationary at the gym and no longer need the one at home, so they’re ready to sell it to defray gym membership costs. Ta-daa! Stationary for sale!

The point is this: Whatever the exercise gear you need, there’s no reason to pay full price for it simply because you fear its history. There are good reasons for a perfectly functional item to be for sale at a reasonable price. Enjoy the savings.

bellyBody weight can be simply defined as, the weight which totally represents our maximum life expectancy of our whole body structure. It varies according to persons, age, gender etc.The body weight basically comprises of muscles, bones, muscle tendons, bony ligament, body organs etc.The ideal weight can be accessed through body mass index in an individual. Normal body mass index is 18-24, in which we measure height and weight of an individual. Body weight can be expressed in terms of kilogram.

seniormanBack pain can be usually defined the pain which is chronic in nature and lasts for about 7-12 days. One of the most highly occurring causes is postural behaviors of our young generation that also leads us towards the undesirable effects and causes of back pain. A number of experimental studies were designed to help the individuals with causes of back pain that are mostly over linked with our body weight. One of the most fascinated results of the study was found on the research of Ross et al, in which he explained the reason that After checking the results of calculation from BMI index it was found that mostly underweight people are affected by the back pain in most of the U.S countries, and this could be the most concerning reason of this modern era.

• Causes of Back pain:

* According to Kleinberg et.al (2007), it was found that about 95% causes of back pain occur with the genetic reason of self-limiting and benign problems.

* Heavy doing work like handling the machines in a factory also causes back pain.

* Patient presenting with past history of any of calcium and mineral intake problems would also result in back pain.

* Psychological factors like when one feels depressed or very much stressed from a tiring and unhand able situation, then also Back pain occurs.

• Treatment for Back pain:

Back pain is one of the chronic ailments that must be treated on hand because if not treated properly, than it grows the area for a large number of serious diseases, for which the treatment afterwards can become very difficult.

The Most Important Bone In The Body – Part 2

By Dr. Kevin Kita

Continued from part 1 of this article…..

humanbodyThe sphenoid makes up part of the bottom of your skull. The pituitary gland sits on top of the sphenoid bone inside the skull. The pituitary gland is an endocrine gland that secretes important hormones vital to the body’s proper functioning. Hormones secreted from the pituitary gland help control the following body processes: growth, blood pressure, breast milk production, sex organ functions in both male and female, thyroid gland function, conversion of food into energy (metabolism), water regulation and balance with the kidneys, temperature regulation, and pain relief. Some aspects of pregnancy and childbirth including stimulation of uterine contractions during childbirth can also be affected. If the sphenoid bone is not in its proper position many of these hormones won’t be secreted in the proper amount from the pituitary gland.

Sphenoid subluxation or misalignment can cause migraines, headaches, depression, memory problems, brain dysfunction, dyslexia, learning disabilities, bed wetting, nightmares, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, color blindness, psychological disturbances, and moodiness. There can also be problems associated with taste, smell, hearing, vision, speech problems, dry mouth, teeth grinding, dental malocclusion, eye pain, deviation of the eyeball, eyelid weakness, balance issues, problems with tongue and or sucking, asthma, sinusitis, neck and lower back problems and scoliosis.

Some of the most likely causes of a sphenoid subluxation or misalignment are from falls, accidents, sports, minor falls, and childhood traumas, the birthing process and many more. Severe emotional stress or toxins can also affect the proper placement of the sphenoid bone.

doctorCorrecting cranial subluxations can be done with a light force adjusting instrument called the arthrostim that corrects cranial subluxations, removing pressure on the brain and spinal cord and the nervous system in general. This is a gentle procedure that patients (from infants to the elderly) usually find comfortable. Cranial adjustments usually stay in place for long periods of time, except if someone is dehydrated or another trauma occurs. Sometimes a cranial bone may need more than one correction if there was a severe head injury, severe trauma, dehydration, or nutritional deficiency. The results can be dramatic and leave the person healthier, both physically and emotionally like never before. After reading this you now know how important the sphenoid bone is to the overall proper functioning of your body.

The Most Important Bone In The Body – Part 1

brainYou are born with 306 bones in your body give or take a few because of anomalies. There are so many bones to choose from that are important to the human body functioning properly, but this bone when misaligned or out of place can affect almost every bone in the body. Unless you are a healthcare practitioner you probably haven’t even heard of it before.

The bone that I am referring to is the Sphenoid bone. The sphenoid bone is one of the cranial bones that make up the skull. It is an unpaired cranial bone located right behind the side of both eyes. Why the sphenoid bone? The sphenoid bone has also been called the keystone bone, because it touches or articulates with every cranial bone in the skull. If the sphenoid bone is misaligned then quite possibly every bone in the skull could be misaligned too. The sphenoid bone comes from the Greek word sphenoeides or wedge-like. The sphenoid bone is one of the seven bones that articulate to form the orbit of the eye. Its shape somewhat resembles that of a butterfly or bat with its wings extended.

Your skull is not a single bone but it is made up of many cranial bones. You have eight larger bones that protect your brain and 14 smaller bones that make up the lower front of your skull.

Your skull is not a single bone but it is made up of many cranial bones. You have eight larger bones that protect your brain and 14 smaller bones that make up the lower front of your skull. Most everybody thinks that the cranial bones do not move. The Cranial Academy and Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation found that there is life-long mobility of the cranial bones and sutures in healthy human beings. Sutures are the spaces between the cranial bones. Cranial bones can move in small amounts and do possess an inherent rhythmic motion. According to a study by Nelson, Sergueef and Glonek this rhythmic motion or oscillations occur 4 to 6 cycles per minute. Osteopathic physicians report the same oscillation rhythm in cranial bone motion in their studies too. Even NASA research has stated, “Although the skull is often assumed to be a rigid container with a constant volume, many researchers have demonstrated that the skull moves on the order of a few micro millimeters with changes in intracranial pressure.” This movement of your cranial bones and sutures is essential for health.

The Importance And Benefits Of Yoga For Children

By Anthony Smith

boytouchingtoesFrom hot yoga to power yoga to dog yoga, it seems that yoga is everywhere these days and we Australians are more than happy to embrace it. In fact more people take a yoga class each year than play Australian Rules Football.

The advantages of yoga for adults are well known, which is why we keep going back year after year. But yoga’s benefits are not just restricted to stressed-out adults with tight lower backs. In fact, yoga offers a wealth of benefits to children, from young toddlers through to teens.

It is not surprising then that kids yoga has taken off around the country. Seen as a viable alternative to (or complement to) joining the local sporting team, tai kwon do, or even French lessons, young people around Australia are taking up regular yoga practice in fun supportive environments. Here are 5 important reasons to consider seeking out regular yoga classes for your child.

Enhances concentration: Focus and concentration is a natural by-product of a child learning to move his or her body through the various poses, he or she acquires focus and concentration. It helps develop their attention span, which helps school performance and behavioural issues.

Confidence: Learning to master any skill is great for your child’s self-esteem. Children are naturally flexible and it is easy for them to enjoy poses early on, helping them to believe in their abilities and provide motivation to go on. Yoga also teaches persistence and patience as a path to success.

Positive body awareness: As children are still growing and developing yoga is a fun and safe way to improve co-ordination and body awareness, teaching kids to tune in and listen to feedback from their bodies as they move through the postures. Alison Potts, owner and director of Brisbane Yoga Tree says yoga helps children get in touch with movement in a culture dominated by digital screens. “We’re in a time now where kids are getting fewer opportunities to do what comes naturally to them – that is, running around and getting energy moving through their bodies, really feeling who they are in their physical selves, head to toes, “ she says. “Yoga gives kids an experience of their whole selves – it is dynamic, energetic and centred on their whole selves. That’s why kids love yoga – because the reward they get from it is what their natural bodies already crave.”

Relaxation and stress relief: The practice of yoga is a natural anti-dote to every day stress in kids’ lives. The relaxation benefits help with sleeping patterns and keeping kids calm. Breathing and meditation also goes hand in hand with yoga and these tools empowers kids to find ways to cope with and manage their own stress, creating positive habits for life. Ms Potts recommends meditation to tackle childhood pressure from social media and feeling the need to fit in. “Meditation is a powerful practice for children, rooting them in the present and allowing their real self to connect with them. Calm and relaxation are the obvious benefits but the feeling of being deeply connected to one’s own power is immeasurable.”

Kind social interactions: Inside the yoga class, kids are nurtured by the non-competitive environment and differences are encouraged and celebrated. In this atmosphere, tolerance and kindness flourishes.

Strength and flexibility: Like all forms of exercise, yoga helps keep kids active, building strength and maintaining flexibility. Yoga helps maintain healthy joints and growing bones.

Yoga is for children of all ages. Yoga for kids, especially very young kids, are fun and upbeat. Kids are engaged with singing and stories woven through the yoga movements so it really feels like play while they are still getting all the benefits of the practice.

Complement Your Fitness Regimen With Non-Surgical Body Contouring

by Louis Silberman

joggersA good fitness regimen can help you feel better, lose weight, improve your health, increase your energy level and make you feel more confident in your skin. But, even when we’re exercising regularly and maintaining a balanced diet, some of us are still troubled by “problem areas” that just won’t go away. The most common of these areas are the lower abdomen, thighs and buttocks. The problems can range from cellulite to excess inches and even sagging skin.

While these “problem areas” may not pose any health risks, they can often make people feel self-conscious and uncomfortable with their bodies. For a long time, the only way to address these issues was with surgery. But now, there are simple non-invasive procedures that can be performed in less than an hour, with no downtime.

Advances in medical aesthetic technology allow us to get a smooth, slimming effect with the use of ultrasound waves, radiofrequency energy, fat freezing technology and other FDA-approved modalities.

Advances in medical aesthetic technology allow us to get a smooth, slimming effect with the use of ultrasound waves, radiofrequency energy, fat freezing technology and other FDA-approved modalities. Treatments that utilize ultrasound technology reduce the appearance of cellulite by delivering localized heat below the skin. This electronically-induced heat creates a micro-massage effect that redistributes fat cells and encourages blood circulation. Treatments that employ infrared and radiofrequency modalities use light and radio frequencies to produce heat below the skin; at the same time a mechanical vacuum massage works to shrink the size of fat cells, resulting in a loss in circumference and a reduction of cellulite. Fat freezing is the newest innovation in body sculpting. It works by delivering controlled cooling to fat cells, which will eliminate those cells over time.

While these devices allow us to get great results at a fraction of the price of surgical procedures, it’s important to point out that these procedures do not produce the same results as liposuction or laser liposuction. The non-surgical body contouring treatments typically work best on people who are near their ideal weight, but have one or two areas that have not been able to be “smoothed out” by diet and exercise alone. Some common complaints are those about “a muffin top,” “saddle bags” and “cottage cheese.”

Depending on the type of treatment you receive, you may need several sessions to get the best results. It is also extremely important to find a practitioner who is clinically trained in body contouring. When you visit a doctor, nurse, aesthetician, cosmetic laser technician or another medical aesthetic professional to get a consultation, be sure to ask about his or her credentials, experience and education.
