The article focused on the study and prevalence of “nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a disease characterized by fat in the liver,” and how weight loss affected the remission of this disease. In the study that focused on weight loss surgery, it was shown that 85 percent of patients with NASH – which is also often referred to as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease – were no longer suffering from the condition when examined one year after their weight loss surgery. According to bariatric surgeon Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S, while very few similar studies have been done tying liver health directly to weight loss surgery, others, including one mentioned by the article, do examine liver health in terms of weight loss in general. Therefore, what this study (and many others pertaining to weight loss surgery’s benefit with a variety of other health conditions) really shows is that weight loss surgery is a tremendous tool to help patients lose weight. According to Dr. Feiz, there are two distinct ways that a weight loss surgery helps a patient lose the weight and keep it off:

1. “It Limits Capacity” – What all bariatric procedures have in common, notes Dr. Feiz, is that they are designed to make people feel full with less food at each meal. The gastric band technique does this by slowing the intake of food via a band placed around the entrance to the stomach, while the gastric sleeve works by actually removing a large portion of the stomach to create a smaller stomach. Dr. Feiz notes that he prefers these newer methods over the gastric bypass procedure because they do not alter the path of digestion, and generally offer a lower rate of complications.

2. “It Limits Cravings” – Dr. Feiz always reminds his patients that one of the biggest differences between the Lap Band and the gastric sleeve procedure is that the gastric sleeve provides the patient with added hormonal benefits. He explains that, when roughly 80 percent of the stomach is removed with the sleeve gastrectomy, the part of the stomach largely responsible for emitting much of the hunger hormone, known as ghrelin, is also removed. This means that, after the surgery, far less of this hormone reaches the brain every time the stomach is empty, significantly reducing cravings.

“The evidence for the benefits of coffee consumption is even more convincing than it was five years ago, especially when it comes to preventing type 2 diabetes and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke,” says Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Although caffeine is by far the most studied compound in coffee, the beverage is a complex brew that contains hundreds, if not thousands, of bioactive components. Among these are vitamins, minerals, and potent, plant-based anti-inflammatory compounds known as polyphenols. Most likely, it’s the combination of these substances, rather than caffeine itself, that confers coffee’s potential health benefits.

Caffeine, a mild stimulant, triggers a short-term rise in blood pressure and heart rate. While some coffee drinkers welcome the stimulant effect, others complain that caffeine causes daytime jitters and sleepless nights. Now, researchers acknowledge that a moderate amount of caffeine is fine for most people with heart disease as long as they don’t have a heart-rhythm problem.

“People develop tolerance to caffeine within a few days, so the effects cannot be extrapolated to the long term. Over time, caffeine does raise the resting metabolic rate and increase energy expenditure, albeit modestly, so it may actually turn out to be helpful in controlling body weight,” says Dr. Hu.

New Study On The Hassles Vs. The Benefits Of The Home Cooked Meal

healthyheartDetermining whether or not families who sit down together for at least one daily meal are healthier than families who eat on the run has weighed heavily on busy parents for decades. In a new blog dated Oct. 1, 2014 titled “Benefits vs. Hassles of Home Cooked Meals,” blogger Liz Ernst addresses a new study titled “The Joy of Cooking?” that finds the chore of cooking family meals might be asking too much of already overstretched parents.

The study, written and published by North Carolina State University Sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott and Joslyn Brenton, finds that time limitations, financial constraints, and the “feeding challenges that shape the family meal” might make the chore of cooking a family dinner too burdensome for parents, or more specifically, women.

The research findings show that the ideal of home cooking and family meals place undue stresses on many families, and are simply unachievable to others.

According to Bowen, an associate professor of sociology at NC State and co-author of a paper on the ongoing study, the study’s purpose is to understand the relationship between the ideal (of the family meal) that is presented in popular culture and the realities that people live with when it comes to feeding their children.

Study researchers interviewed 150 female caregivers in families with children between the ages of 2 and 8, and conducted in-depth observations of 12 of these families for a total of 250 hours. Their findings conclude that middle-class, working-class and poor families face some similar challenges, and that mothers from all backgrounds reported difficulty in finding time to prepare meals that everyone in the family would be willing to eat.

Input from mothers involved in the study include the struggle some say they feel between their desire to spend quality time with their children and the expectation to provide a home cooked meal routinely. Financial concerns also play a prominent role in meal planning, as many middle-class mothers often worry about their inability to afford fresh and organic foods for their meals.

Poor families face the toughest limitations, citing an inability to afford items like fresh produce or the kitchen tools they need to prepare meals, and to obtain transportation to and from the grocery store.

According to Bowen, poor mothers often skip meals and stand in long lines at non-profit food pantries to provide food for their children, which makes the idea of home cooked meal making seem unrealistic.

Movies and television shows are increasingly easier to obtain, computer games look better than ever, and all the popular social networking sites are just a click away. It’s a wonderful addition to our tech-savvy lives in the present, but can come at high cost for our children.

Before computers became integrated into our daily lives, children often found other ways to amuse themselves. They usually played outside to socialize with other children, but it was not uncommon to play alone, and use their imaginations. Whether running around in a park, or climbing on playground equipment, children were often very active in their environment. This kind of behavior yields wonderful advantages for children in today’s world as well.

Most importantly, children should be encouraged to play outside for the physical benefits involved. Oftentimes in play, a child will run or jump, exercising the body in a very healthy fashion. A childhood rich in such playtime will instill good exercise habits early, pushing the child to remain active and healthy with age. It’s much easier to continue a lifestyle than it is to start a new one. The more time spent playing outside, the less time spent in front of a screen, eating junk food out of boredom.

Outside play is also an excellent way to teach basic social skills to children. Many kids are tied to their electronic devices today, having been raised with, and around them. While an efficient form of communication, it deprives them of basic communication skills that are pivotal in forming interpersonal relationships. A child who is accustomed to interacting with others directly will often grow to be an outgoing and confident adult.

Despite the advantages, there are certain risks to playing outside. Children are more likely to hurt themselves while physically active. Bruises and scrapes are common, especially when using playground equipment. If not closely monitored, children can also gang up on one another, causing distress and conflict.

The benefits far outweigh the liabilities. Encouraging children to develop the healthy habit of playing outside will lead to a more active adult lifestyle, prolonging health, wellness, and productivity. Being as physically and socially able as possible now will prepare them to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible later, both personally and professionally. Every child should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential, and encouraging them to indulge in outside playtime is a fun and effective way to ensure that happens.

New Benefits Of Aspirin For Cancer Prevention

As Bel Marra Health reports in its article, (, a new study indicates that long-term aspirin therapy may provide a strategy to protect against cancers of the digestive tract.

The research findings, published in Annals of Oncology, showed that taking aspirin, also known as acetlylsalicylic acid or ASA, in daily low doses – often just one pill a day – could significantly reduce the risk of developing stomach and bowel cancers, as well as cancer of the esophagus.

A research team from the Center for Cancer Prevention at the Queen Mary University of London performed a meta-analysis of previous studies investigating the benefits and harms of aspirin use.

Based on the team’s findings, the researchers say bowel cancer cases could be reduced by 35 percent (deaths by 40 percent) and stomach and esophageal cancer cases could be reduced by 30 percent (deaths by 35 to 50 percent) if adults aged 50 to 65 took a 75 mg to 100 mg dose of aspirin each day for five to 10 years. Aspirin comes in a variety of dosages over-the-counter, ranging from 30 mg to 400 mg, sometimes more.

According to the published findings in the Annals of Oncology, the effects of aspirin on cancer didn’t take effect until three years into treatment, but the benefits lasted when aspirin was used long-term. There was no connection when dosage was examined; individuals using low and standard dosages saw the same benefits.

The results add to the list of demonstrated benefits of daily aspirin therapy, which also include its help as an antiplatelet for those at high risk of stroke or heart attack. In prior studies, aspirin has shown preventative effects against ovarian, prostate and breast cancers, as well as some skin cancers, the American Cancer Society reports.

Study authors acknowledge there is a well-known risk factor of aspirin – excess internal bleeding. But they say the benefits appear to outweigh the risk as long as the correct dosage isn’t exceeded. Over a 15-year period, individuals in the study group saw a 4 percent reduction in all deaths.

Spokesperson for Bel Marra Health Dr. Victor Marchione says, “This recent development doesn’t mean that you should take more than a recommended dose of aspirin, or continue with poor lifestyle habits. That little pill won’t wave away the harm of smoking, drinking and obesity which all contribute to cancer risk.”

No public health organizations, including the American Cancer Society, recommend taking aspirin as a sole preventative measure for cancer or any other illness.

teaTea contains substances that have been linked to good health. Regular tea drinkers are less likely to develop diabetes and may have a lower risk of heart disease.

Tea, especially green tea, is often said to be good for your health. Tea contains substances linked to a lower risk for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. But keep tea’s healthy boost in perspective, says the September 2014 Harvard Men’s Health Watch.

“Tea consumption, especially green tea, may not be the magic bullet, but it can be incorporated in an overall healthy diet with whole grains, fish, fruits and vegetables, and less red and processed meat,” says Qi Sun, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The main health-promoting substances in tea are polyphenols, in particular catechins and epicatechins. Lab and animal studies say these molecules have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Harvard-led studies of large groups of people over time have found that tea or coffee drinkers are at lower risk for diabetes and possibly cardiovascular disease. Coffee also contains polyphenols.

Now here’s the key caveat: It remains unclear whether the tea itself is the cause of these benefits and, if so, how it works its magic. The studies attempt to rule out the possibility that tea drinkers simply live healthier lifestyles, but it’s difficult to be sure. That said, tea itself appears to have no harmful effects except for a case of the jitters if you drink too much caffeinated brew. It fits in perfectly well with a heart-healthy lifestyle.

One important warning: A cup of tea contains only a couple calories. Processed, sugar-sweetened tea beverages are loaded with extra calories. “If there are any health benefits to green tea consumption, it’s probably completely offset by adding sugar,” Sun says.
