ObesityLos Angeles orthopedic surgeon Dr. Eric Millstein of the Shoulder Surgery Center of Excellence remarks on a new study detailing the impact of obesity on the outcome of shoulder replacement surgery.

A new study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery on November 6th, researchers examined the short and long-term results of total shoulder arthroplasty in obese patients. The study followed 76 patients who had undergone total shoulder arthroplasty and grouped them according to their body mass index (BMI). 26 of the patients were categorized as having a ‘normal’ BMI, 25 as ‘overweight’, and 25 as ‘obese’. Details of each patient and procedure were recorded and evaluated at baseline and at the follow-up visit 2 years post-surgery.

“The purpose of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery study was to find the effects of obesity on total shoulder arthroplasty,” said Dr. Eric Millstein, director of Shoulder Surgery Center of Excellence. “The overall results of any type of orthopedic surgery can be influenced by the physical state and condition of the patient.”

Although the study found that the short-term outcome of total shoulder arthroplasty in obese patients differed little from that in patients with a more normal BMI, there were discrepancies with the long-term results. Excess weight did not seem to have a negative effect on short-term shoulder function, but the overall physical function in obese patients did not improve in the long term. The patients with a normal BMI experienced both increased shoulder function and overall physical function following the procedure.

“Total shoulder arthroplasty can be a great option for decreasing shoulder pain and increasing function in patients with shoulder conditions,” Dr. Millstein continued. “The recovery process for TSA surgery places a significant emphasis on physical rehabilitation, and anything that may hinder the rehabilitation can certainly affect the results. It is important for both doctors and patients to evaluate each case and make the necessary changes in order to try to increase the chances of total successful procedure.”
