Simple Dietary Changes To Keep Your Heart Healthy

Share Button

Submitted By Richard Adams

healthyheartIt’s been said that the human heart is the most important muscle in the body. Bearing in mind the fact that heart disease is currently the number one killer in the developed world this might not be far from the truth. The good news is that keeping your heart in good condition needn’t be rocket science.

Two of the biggest changes we can all make are to eat better and to exercise more. While they’re both important, it is arguably our diets that are most easily changed. In this guide we’ll therefore be looking at some simple and efficient changes you can make to protect your cardiovascular system…

Reduce Your Intake of Saturated Fats

One factor that virtually every cardiologist can agree on is that saturated fat can raise your cholesterol levels, which in turn puts you at greater risk of heart disease. Studies comparing diet with the risk of heart disease have shown that every additional 10 grams of saturated fat consumed per day leads to a 0.03mm increase in the thickness of artery walls; a well-known metric used to measure the appearance of atherosclerosis.

Luckily, not all fats are bad, and many experts believe that unsaturated fats are positively beneficial in your diet. Generally speaking most saturated fats are solid at room temperature, so to keep your heart healthy aim to reduce your consumption of fatty meat, butter, cream and cheese. Some plant oils such as coconut oil and palm oil are also high in saturated fats.

In contrast great sources of healthy unsaturated fats include oily fish, avocados and many nuts and so these should be incorporated regularly into your diet.

Increase Your Fiber Intake

Fiber doesn’t just “keep you regular” – it has also been found to help control your cholesterol levels, and in doing so to help protect you from heart problems. Scientists think that it does this by binding to cholesterol in the food that you eat, so that it is excreted rather than being absorbed into the blood.

This positive impact of fiber on heart disease has been shown time and again in rigorous scientific analysis. For example, one group of scientists followed over 300,000 people for a period of ten years, cross-referencing their intake of fiber with cardiac events. They found that consuming an additional 10 grams of fiber per day was associated with a 14% decrease in the risk of serious heart problems. Indeed, some studies have found evidence that fiber consumption has an even bigger effect on heart health than diets that are high in saturated fats.

So what fiber should you be eating? Much of the research to date has focused on wholegrains, which are known to not only be high in fat but also lead to a slow, steady release of glucose into the bloodstream, meaning more balanced blood sugar. One group of scientists, for example, found that people who consumed 2 servings of wholegrains per day were 21% less likely to suffer from heart disease than people not regularly consuming them. Other great sources of fiber include brown bread and whole meal pasta, together with a whole host of different fruits and vegetables.

At the same time, it isn’t always easy to consume enough fiber with today’s hectic lifestyles. For these individuals the easiest solution is to consider a fiber supplement. Popular options with impressive results demonstrated include psyllium husk, inulin and guar gum that can be bought in powder or tablet form.

Eat More Garlic

healthywordsCholesterol is a normal part of life, and in moderation it is crucial to our survival. Among other things, for example, cholesterol is a key component that makes up the walls of every cell in our bodies.

Problems arise either when the delicate balance between LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and HDL (“good”) cholesterol fails, or when LDL cholesterol is attacked by free radicals in the environment around us.

Experts believe that garlic plays an important role in preventing this chemical reaction that turns LDL cholesterol into OxLDL – a far more dangerous version – which can lead to atherosclerosis and, ultimately, heart disease. In doing so, garlic helps to protect our cardiovascular system.

Focus on Oily Fish

Omega 3 oils are positively associated with reduced inflammation and, as a result, a lessened chance of circulatory problems.

A study tracked almost 85,000 nurses for a period of 14 years. During this time regular questionnaires were completed on diet, while health checks recorded any cardiovascular risk. The study found that the more fish the women consumed, the lower their odds of suffering from coronary heart disease.

The impacts of dietary omega 3 oils have been borne out in numerous other experiments. One experiment provided healthy male volunteers with either 14 grams of fish oil per day or a placebo for a period of six weeks. The experts found cholesterol levels fell by an average of 22% in those participants supplementing with omega 3.

Most health experts recommend that to keep your heart healthy we should all be eating at least two portions of fish per week, with at least one of these being “oily” fish like mackerel or salmon. For people who don’t have the time or inclination to regularly cook fresh fish, studies suggest that fish oil in supplement form offers similar benefits to the heart, though these do of course omit some of the other beneficial nutrients found in whole fish.

Take Plant Sterols

Plant sterols are naturally-occurring compounds that mimic the overall shape of cholesterol in the body. As a result, plant sterols compete with cholesterol in the body, cutting down the amount of cholesterol that binds to cholesterol receptors. The impact of plant sterols can be considerable. Studies have shown, for example, that an intake of just 2 grams of sterols reduces LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels by an average of 10%. Even better, plant sterols are regularly available in supplement form, so it is easy to top up your levels on a daily basis.

Reduce Salt Intake

healthyheartThe human body maintains a careful balance of sodium and potassium – two chemicals that we think of more commonly as “salt”. This balance is crucial as it allows your kidneys to draw excess water out of the body and dispose of it in the form of urine. Excess salt in your diet, however, upsets this balance. As the kidneys are unable to extract water efficiently the end result can be raised blood pressure (hypertension). As you might imagine, this effect can also damage the kidneys when taken to excess.

High blood pressure is known to be a factor in all sorts of unpleasant health conditions. For example, one study on the impact of high blood pressure found that it was responsible for 62% of strokes and 49% of heart disease.

At the same time, studies have looked at the impact of reducing salt intake on the risk of cardiovascular disease. One investigation involved 744 participants who reduced the salt intake by roughly 25% for a period of 18 months. Comparing those patients that had reduced their salt intake with the control group who had not, the risk of developing heart disease reduced by a quarter simply by controlling salt. In other words you want to protect your heart; it therefore makes sense to minimize your salt intake.

Keeping your heart healthy doesn’t need to be rocket science. While you should also consider including regular exercise in your weekly regime there are a host of simple dietary changes that can be made. Cut down on salt and unhealthy fats while bulking up on fiber and oily fish and you’ll be well on your way to long-term heart health. Lastly, as we have seen, supplements like plant sterols, psyllium or cod liver oil capsules can give you a little extra boost when you need it.

5 Ways On Managing Your Dog’s Skin Allergies

Share Button

By Monica Mendoza

walkingdogJust like us humans, our dogs can be prone to skin allergies, causing them to scratch, itch, and chew at their skin and fur. This can cause not only unattractive, bald patches on their coat but possible wounds and injuries as well.

Fortunately, there are ways to help manage your dog’s skin allergies, or even prevent them from being triggered – with some you can do even before a veterinarian has to get involved. Below is a list to helpful tips you can implement in case you’ve noticed your dog scratching and itching more than usual.

Prevent flea infestation at all costs. Nothing can trigger or exacerbate a dog’s skin allergy faster and more effectively than fleas. In fact, it would only take a couple of bites from a lone flea to get your furry companion to scratch themselves until they’ve gouged bloody scratches onto their skin. Imagine, then, how they would feel with a full-blown flea infestation. As such, you should always have your dog on some sort of flea prevention method as much as possible. Giving them regular anti-flea treatment baths and powders are both effective solutions.

Buy only hypoallergenic accessories for your dog. Another similarity between dogs and humans when it comes to skin allergies is that the materials making up their accessories could also trigger an allergic reaction. Some dogs, for example, can get contact dermatitis from metal collars, while others may get skin irritation from wool covers on their beddings. In such cases it’s recommended to just get a brand new dog collar or cover, preferably one that’s made of hypoallergenic material and clearly sold as such. You may have to work with your veterinarian to verify what is hypoallergenic to your dog and what isn’t.

Maintain a strict diet. While the occasional store-bought treat is harmless and can give your dog a great mood boost, it’s always a good idea to keep your dog on a strict and hypoallergenic diet. Use fruit or brightly-colored vegetables (such as carrots) as treats instead of those with preservatives or artificial flavorings. Avoid giving your dog anything that has poultry, dairy or beef in it, as they are common allergy triggers.

Give your dog regular baths. Some dogs love baths while others just won’t get one without a fight. Whichever category your dog falls into, it’s important for them to be bathed one or twice a week – preferably with a gentle, soap-free shampoo formulated especially for canines. If you’ve already been to the veterinarian, then they should have already prescribed a medicated shampoo for your dog to use. Also, be sure to wash off all the shampoo suds off your dog completely, as any leftover suds may cause itching.

Have your dog undergo allergy testing and immunization therapy. Figuring out what is responsible for your dog’s allergy can be a trial of patience and anxiety. If you and your dog are both at your wits’ ends, you can go right to the veterinarian and have them perform allergy testing on your canine companion. From there, it’s possible that your dog will have to undergo immunotherapy – i.e. having your dog regularly injected with serum in order to desensitize them to their allergens and train their immune systems to ‘ignore’ the allergens. This may be a cost-prohibitive measure and involve multiple visits, but you’ll no longer have to worry about your dog having an allergic reaction, especially if it turns out that his allergens are something very common (such as pollen or even human dander).

Skin allergies are no picnic, especially for a dog. However, as their owners and companions, we can take certain steps in order to prevent our pets from developing these allergies. As with all medical advice, however, if you’re not sure about your dog’s allergies, it’s always a good idea to skip the self-diagnosis and go straight to the veterinarian.

The Topic Of Self-Acceptance

womanweightsThank you to the Baylor College of Medicine for submitting this article to YourHealthJournal.com…..

When it comes to self-acceptance and how we feel about our bodies, we can be hard on ourselves. So how can we improve our attitudes about our bodies? Baylor College of Medicine’s Dr. Elizabeth McIngvale gives her tips on how to achieve a positive self-image.

“When it comes to how we view our bodies, social media can be a contributing factor, society plays a huge factor and then there are specific mental health conditions centered around eating disorders that can significantly impact body image,” said McIngvale, assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor. “Additionally, the people we surround ourselves with can play a part in how we see ourselves.”

When it comes to seeing images on social media, McIngvale said the most important thing for people to remember is that we should not compare ourselves, especially to unrealistic images.

“Many times we compare ourselves to images that are airbrushed and filtered, which is not where we should be placing our importance or our significance,” she said. “Often when people go on trips, for example to the beach, one might get caught up looking at images on social media and think that is what they are supposed to look like in a swim suit, and they forget the real importance of the trip, which is to spend time with the people they care about.”

Doing activities you enjoy either with others or by yourself can make you feel healthier and improve your self-care greatly, McIngvale said. You have to transition your thinking away from traditional thoughts about how to view your body.

McIngvale recommends practicing positive self-talk. This can be done by reminding yourself that you are worthy, you are beautiful and also by being keenly aware that beauty is much more than the way you look on the outside.

“Beauty is not just physical. It is who you are as a person. It encompasses what you do for others and who you are as a part of society and your community,” she said. “It is important to remind yourself of your worth and of the things that you love about yourself.”

When you find yourself making comparisons to others, McIngvale emphasized that you should not feel that it is abnormal, because almost everybody does so and almost nobody feels like they are perfect.

familywalk“Often if I say to someone, ‘I want you to find one person’s body that you want,’ most people will actually say ‘I didn’t find that one person because I want her legs and I want her upper body and I want her stomach.’ The reality is that we all have areas of our body that we like compared to areas that we don’t like as much. It is about honing in on the qualities that you like about yourself, practicing acceptance and treating yourself better. Health is not synonymous with looks, we must remember that,” said McIngvale.

Body image is not rooted in substance, she explained. It changes every day and often even if we reach our ideal body goals, we still are not satisfied because we have a continuously unsatisfactory attitude toward ourselves. The focus should be on health and wellness not body image.

“Remember to think about your attributes that make you feel good and that are rooted in substance,” McIngvale said. “You should always be keeping yourself motivated about the traits that you love most about yourself and are most proud of about yourself. Often these qualities have nothing to do with looks but instead are focused on principles important to you and the way you define who you are and what you do.”

Give Your Feet the Pampering They Deserve

Share Button

By Monica Mendoza

feetFeet can take a lot of abuse. They bear your entire body weight and take you from place to place, so they should be given their own time to be pampered and cared for. Below are some of our top tips for keeping your toes in tip-top shape:

Keep them clean and dry

This seems like it should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway. You wash your hands and keep them clean on a regular basis, so it should follow that the same should be done for your feet, especially since you only get to them maybe twice a day at most. Give them a thorough soaping and scrubbing the next time you’re in the shower and don’t get out without drying them properly. Moisture can attract bacteria that can wreak all sorts of havoc, so definitely consider using a separate towel just for your feet after your shower or bath.

Use an exfoliate

Exfoliating doesn’t have to be limited to just your face. If you want baby-soft, smooth skin all over, you shouldn’t leave the rest of your body out of it. Dead skin cells and dirt can also accumulate on the surface of your feet, so it’s a good idea to scrub them away periodically. Exfoliating also helps reduce calluses and control peeling.

To bring out revitalized skin, we like to use Innisfree’s Perfect Fresh Foot Scrub Wash for sloughing off. This product contains lemon balm, mint extracts, and lemon mint scent, which will not only relax your feet but also leave you feeling refreshed.

Give them a break

One of the best ways to relieve sore feet after a long day is something as simple as putting them up. This is because elevating your feet helps improve blood circulation and provides instant soothing. You can further reduce your stress levels by going for a foot massage session or doing it yourself. Use a hydrating moisturizer to moisturize and soften your feet while getting your pampering on. When you can help it, go barefoot — it’s actually healthy for feet to not be constrained by shoes sometimes. Your feet will also thank you immensely if you keep off the high heels for a while. If you can’t live without them, at least alternate them with flat shoes that are just as sophisticated and pretty.

Give yourself a pedicure

An at-home pedicure is one of the best ways to pamper your feet and keep them flip-flop ready. Start with a relaxing foot soak by dipping your feet into a washbasin full of warm water. You can add your choice of bath salts, your favorite foot soak mix, or add a few drops of pure essential oil for the scent and softening effect. Pat dry, then cut your nails with a clipper, taking care not to go too deep into the corners. Buff the nails with a soft brush to remove dirt and grime, then follow up with a couple of coats of your favorite nail polish. Don’t forget to moisturize when you’re done!

Just by taking a few minutes out every day to take care of your feet, you can do them a world of good. What’s relaxing for your feet can also be relaxing for you, so go ahead and give your tootsies some love!

How To Cope After A Traumatic Experience

Share Button

By Veselina Dzhingarova

womanAt one stage of your life or another, something serious may happen that leaves a mark on your mental health. It’s an inevitable part of life and traumatic events happen to everyone. Whether it be the death of a family member, an accident or a robbery, traumatic events could have serious consequences on the functioning of our brains if not properly addressed.

These mental, physical and emotional effects often last for a long time and can lead to PTSD, depression and a variety of other problems. But with adequate support systems, methods and time, you can learn to alleviate these issues and put them in the past where they belong, allowing you to continue living a happy and healthy life.

Group Therapy

Support groups are popular for a reason; they’re effective and allow you to confide within those who have shared a similar experience to yours. Find one in your local area and ask if you can join. These types of groups are usually freely open to anyone and can greatly benefit your mental health if you participate. Local groups are a great choice if you don’t have any close family or friends that you’re comfortable speaking to or if they don’t understand how you feel.

If your family or friends were involved in the traumatic incident, speaking to them would prove highly beneficial for both parties. Not only do you get to discuss the issue and find ways to move past it yourself, but you also give your family/friends a chance to share their thoughts.

If you’re not convinced that this is one of the best options available, it’s worth finding out the benefits of group therapy.

Relax and Focus on Yourself

If the event happened recently, take a moment to inhale a few deep breaths and calm your body. This will relieve muscle tension and ease your mind. Be sure to take deep breaths through your nose and hold them in your belly before exhaling through your mouth.

After you’ve calmed down, focus on being mindful and aware of the present. Assess how you feel, what you’re doing, who you’re with and where you are. Focusing on the now will help your mind move away from the past. From here, it’s advisable to try some meditation to further relax your body and mind on a daily basis.

Get Active

What if you could cope with trauma and improve your body at the same time? This is surprisingly easy to do. Simply join a local running, exercise, yoga or sports group and give it your all. Physical movement does a great job at relieving built-up tension and stress derived from trauma.

This is much healthier and beneficial to you in the long term than lying in bed and you’ll see the benefits as time progresses.

It should be clear by now that coping after a traumatic event is a fairly simple and straightforward process that anyone can follow. How did you cope? Let us know in the comments down below.

There are thousands of techniques and recipes available to lose and maintain weight. One must maintain a persistent approach along with being up-to-date on contemporary weight loss research.

If the goal is to lose those extra pounds, an overall routine is needed, not just a diet plan only. The proposed routine should cover the following areas:

  • A balanced diet
  • A regular workout routine
  • A minimized amount of stress

While many deal with stress, it is important to try to adopt as many positive routines as possible. Getting adjusted to a new routine can be difficult but the results are worth the transition. Consulting a nutritionists to create a diet plan and the right application of proposed schedule provides the knowledge necessary to succeed.

Turn the TV Off

A new study revealed that eating dinner while watching TV can add up to 40% extra calories than normal dinner, as does snacking while driving or texting. These are all distractions that can lead to mindless eating.

Step on the Scale!

In order to track progress, checking weight is important but not crucial. It will help to better manage ideal weight. It’s an indicator of how to alter diet and exercise habits.

As nutritionists have now concluded, it is better to have healthy snacks throughout the day rather than lots of junk food later. The best choice will be filling, protein-enriched snacks such as a piece of fruit, or a medium-size bowl of cucumber and cauliflower with 1 T peanut butter.

Drink Water Before Meal

It is widely acclaimed that drinking excessive water regularly and drinking water before eating meals helps to lose weight. It augments metabolism up to 30% in one to 1.5 hours, and triggers the calorie burning process rather effectively.

A recent study revealed that drinking 500ml of water a half an hour before eating will work to eat fewer calories and likely to lose 44% more weight.

applescaleDrink Black Coffee

  • Excellent quality coffee is full of antioxidants, and offers many health benefits, particularly if taken black.
  • Research revealed that the caffeine help enhances metabolism up to 11%, and add fat flaming up to 29%.
  • Sugar can make coffee unhealthy. Avoid sugar or calorie rich creamers.

Drink Green Tea

  • It is widely accepted that Green Tea offers numerous health benefits including antioxidants among others.
  • Green tea contains small sums of caffeine, but also includes an antioxidant called Catechins, which works synergistically with the caffeine to enhance fat burning.

Cook with Coconut Oil

  • Coconut oil is protein-enriched and a healthy cooking oil. It is high in fats called Medium Chain Triglycerides that metabolize differently compared to other fats.
  • Coconut oil fat helps boost metabolism by 120 calories a day in addition to diminishing hunger.
  • However, it is not suggested to add coconut oil on top of what is already being consumed.

Aerobics and Other Workouts

  • Doing Aerobics, cycling, swimming or weightlifting workouts, is something extra to burn calories and perk up bodily and mental health.
  • Workouts help get rid of belly fat, along with dissolving extra fat that is likely to build up around organs and cause some health issues later on.

Sleep Better

Though 8 hours of sleep is considered ideal, if required, extended it a little bit. Studies revealed that a well-rested individual is less prone to snacking due to exhaustion or stress. However, too much rest could have the opposite effect.

There are many ways to bring change to physical well-being. Being educated about fitness and nutrition is the most important factor in weight loss and maintenance.

Common Disabilities That Qualify For SSDI And SSI Benefits

Share Button

By Katherine Smith

doctorImproving quality of life is a huge component of our overall health. That can be difficult to do if you have a disability. In addition to overcoming the day-to-day limitations of a disability, it can be difficult to find work. Being unable to earn a living only adds to the stress, which negatively impacts health on many levels.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are federal programs that provide assistance to people in need. Only ailments listed on the Social Security Disability list of impairments (also called the blue book) are eligible. In some cases, conditions that are not listed may also qualify for SSDI or SSI benefits.

It should be noted that qualifying for disability benefits is often a complicated process. Simply having a disability often isn’t enough to qualify. It may be beneficial to get help from an SSD specialist. Organizations like Myler Disability can provide assistance during the application process to minimize the chance of being denied.

Data from the Social Security Administration (SSA) has shown roughly 50% of SSD applications are denied. However, you have the right to appeal the decision. If the wellbeing of your family hinges on the ability to get benefits, it’s a good idea to exercise this right.

Conditions That Qualify for SSDI and SSI Benefits

Generally speaking, you must have a medical condition that prevents you from being able to find and secure a job. Even after receiving benefits, recipients are encouraged to continue looking for employment and earning an independent income.

Musculoskeletal Problems

This is a fairly broad category that includes conditions affecting the joints, bones and back. Given that back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the U.S., it’s no surprise that musculoskeletal problems are the most common condition among benefit recipients.

Injuries to the spine that affect the ability to move are also included in this category. Amputation is another eligible condition, but typically only if it’s a double amputation.

Mental Disorders

In 2016, mental disorders were the second most common condition covered by disability benefits. In total, 26.3% of disabled workers receive benefits due to a mental disorder. Some of the most common eligible mental disorders include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia

Substance abuse disorders are another qualifying condition that has become more common. The effects of the opioid epidemic can clearly be seen in reports from the SSA. Many states with the highest percentage of workers who receive disability benefits also have the highest rates of drug overdose deaths.

Circulatory System Conditions

Circulatory system problems are also eligible for the disability programs. Conditions that affect the heart often come with a number of debilitating side effects. Cardiovascular impairment can also make physical activity difficult or even dangerous.

Chronic heart failure is a common circulatory system condition. Benefits are also awarded to those who have myocardial ischemia, syncope, central cyanosis, vein disorders and artery disorders.

Sense Organ Disability

A sense organ disability is a condition that impairs one or more senses. The most common conditions are:

  • Vision Loss
  • Hearing Loss
  • Loss of Speech

While those are three of the conditions covered, there are many more that may qualify and total loss is not always necessary.

Nervous System Conditions

A number of nervous system conditions are eligible for SSDI and SSI benefits. Some ailments make it difficult for people to concentrate and carry out cognitive tasks. Others like multiple sclerosis (MS) cause severe pain and fatigue.

Often these types of condition only qualify when they are advanced and producing significant side effects.

Some types of cancer also qualify for disability benefits. All cancers that are considered malignant neoplastic diseases fall into this category. When a person with cancer applies for benefits four things are considered:

  • The origin of the cancer
  • How widespread the cancer is
  • How aggressive the cancer is and response to anticancer therapy
  • Side effects of cancer treatment

Cancer patients need a lot of medical documentation to file an application. The analysts reviewing the application will want detailed information from the pathology report and documents on all treatments received to date.

Outdoor Ideas To Get Kids Moving

Share Button

By Jessica Wilson

active familyThe most common notion surrounding kids is that they’re more prone to going outside and playing there for what could easily turn into hours. However, some kids find themselves spending less time outside mostly because of other leisure activities such as playing video games and checking their own social media accounts. Nowadays, indoor activities tend to take up most of their free time instead of engaging in outdoor play. For them to get moving, presented below are some fun ideas that kids can do outdoors instead of occupying themselves with sedentary hobbies that can negatively affect their health in the long run.

Why Should Kids Spend Some Time Outdoors?

In an ideal world, every kid should have the right to some outdoor play time. Unfortunately, some kids all over the world spend less time outside of their own homes which can be attributed to a couple of things. The first one is that pastimes that don’t require as much physical activity are increasingly becoming popular as they’re more convenient and can be done even while indoors, while the second one is that some parents worry that their kids might get injured after playing outside. Despite those two things that are forcing more and more kids to stay indoors, they should be given enough time to play outside for the following reasons:

● Spending some time outdoors gives kids a sense of adventure as they’re free to roam wherever they wish as long as there’s a parent or guardian to watch over them at random intervals.

● Making sure that kids have at least a few hours’ worth of outdoor play teaches kids essential social skills that they’ll need to use more often once they become full-fledged adults themselves.

● Outdoor play also makes kids healthier as exposure to early morning sunlight provides them with the right amount of Vitamin D that they need for their bones to grow strong.

What Are Some Outdoor Fun Ideas That Can Get Kids Moving?

While there might be times when the outside weather isn’t welcoming which can force kids to spend the rest of their day indoors instead, they should spend at least a few hours outdoors whenever the weather would allow them to do so. To make it more fun for them, here are some ideas that can get them moving in no time at all:

1. Go on a kid-friendly nature hike.

Some outdoor hiking trails might not be as safe for kids, but there are others that they can walk across with ease.

● Kids have to wear the right shoes though so that their feet won’t get hurt while they’re crossing uneven terrain.

● At least one adult should accompany the kids so that their safety is ensured, especially as some hiking trails may have slippery rocks and other hazards.

2. Finish an obstacle course.

Even with only a handful of tires, some rope, and a bunch of PVC pipes, an adult can build an obstacle course that kids can attempt to complete.

● A well-designed backyard obstacle course can make kids use both their physical and mental skills as they encounter various hurdles that are sure to challenge their idea of outdoor play.

● A game of running around an obstacle course can even be turned into a contest where the kid who finishes it in the least time gets a reward.

familywalk23. Turn a normal walk outside into a scavenger hunt.

Even something as seemingly simple as taking a walk outside can be turned into a scavenger hunt where kids can play detective as they tick things off of a checklist.

● All that’s needed for the kids to do a scavenger hunt is a sharp eye and the willingness to ask other people in case they’re having trouble finding an item.

● While some of the item descriptions can be made slightly more cryptic for the scavenger hunt to be a bit more challenging, they should remain easy enough for a kid to find.

4. Play a round of ball.

Part of the reason why ball games have grown to become some of the world’s most popular sports is that they can be played outdoors almost everywhere.

● A couple of makeshift goals can be built in an outdoor area so that the kids can play a simple game of soccer.

● A football game outside with the kids can also be played even without any goals by just kicking the ball and passing it around.

As fewer kids spend some time outdoors, their overall health can get compromised as they don’t move around as much. Thus, they would want to drop the video games and smartphones even for a short while and make sure that their parents would allow them at least a few hours of outside play so that they can grow up to become healthy adults themselves.
